Fingerprint-resistant stainless steel is still stainless steel. The difference is a surface finish: GE Appliances describes its version as stainless steel covered by a clear coat intended to make fingerprints less visible. Traditional stainless models are uncoated. The coating can change reflectivity, cleaning methods and how scratches are handled, but it does not create a new grade of steel or automatically make an appliance suitable for outdoor use.
Because manufacturers use different finish names and construction methods, treat “fingerprint-resistant” as a manufacturer-specific finish claim rather than a universal industry specification. The exact product manual, finish designation and indoor/outdoor rating matter more than the phrase on a retailer’s listing.
What is the difference between stainless steel and fingerprint-resistant stainless steel?
In the GE Appliances material reviewed for this comparison, traditional stainless steel is an exposed, uncoated stainless surface. GE’s fingerprint-resistant stainless steel places a clear coating over the steel. GE says the clear coat allows the shine of the stainless to show through while making everyday fingerprints less conspicuous.
That distinction is about the outer surface, not the metal underneath. A fingerprint-resistant model is not necessarily made from a different alloy, a thicker sheet or a more corrosion-resistant grade. The coating is designed to alter how the surface looks and behaves during normal household use.

| Question | Traditional stainless finish | Fingerprint-resistant finish |
|---|---|---|
| What is on the surface? | Stainless steel with no manufacturer-described clear topcoat. | Stainless steel with a manufacturer-described clear coating; GE uses this construction for its fingerprint-resistant finish. |
| Primary purpose | Provides the familiar stainless appearance and exposed-metal surface. | Reduces the visibility of fingerprints and changes the surface sheen. |
| Appearance | Usually more reflective, depending on the model’s brushing and lighting. | GE describes a richer satin look that is slightly less reflective than its traditional stainless finish. |
| Cleaning sensitivity | Follow the appliance maker’s stainless-steel instructions. | Follow the coating-specific instructions; abrasive tools and harsh chemicals can damage or dull the clear coat. |
| Scratch repair | Repair options depend on the grain and the manufacturer. | GE says cleaning may lessen the appearance of some scratches but does not provide an approved cover-up method for heavy or prominent scratches. |
| Outdoor use | Not established by the word “stainless” alone. | The clear coat does not make an indoor appliance suitable for outdoor installation, according to GE. |
Other manufacturers may use a different coating, texture or branded finish. The reviewed material does not establish one coating recipe, durability rating or fingerprint-reduction percentage that applies across brands.
How the two finishes look in a kitchen
Reflectivity and sheen
Uncoated stainless often reflects more direct light. That can make smudges, streaks and overhead lighting more apparent, especially on a refrigerator door or dishwasher front viewed from an angle. GE characterizes its coated finish as having a richer satin appearance and being slightly less reflective. “Satin” does not mean completely matte: the steel’s shine remains visible through the clear coat.
Matching adjacent appliances
GE says its fingerprint-resistant finish is designed to coordinate with GE’s uncoated stainless products. Coordination is not a promise of an identical visual match. Brushed direction, handle design, panel curvature, lighting color and the age of neighboring appliances can all change the perceived tone. Two appliances that appear similar in a showroom may look different under cool LED light or sunlight.

Cleaning differences and a safe routine
For the GE and Whirlpool instructions reviewed, the conservative routine is warm water, a small amount of mild soap and a clean soft cloth or microfiber cloth, followed by thorough drying. A microfiber cloth is optional; a clean, soft cloth is also suitable. Neither manufacturer’s guidance makes microfiber a requirement or claims that it provides fingerprint protection.
Step-by-step cleaning
- Check the model manual first. Find the section for the exterior, stainless steel or fingerprint-resistant finish. Instructions can differ by finish and by manufacturer.
- Remove loose grit. Wipe away crumbs or dust with a dry, soft cloth. Rubbing grit into the panel can create fine scratches.
- Mix a mild solution. Use warm water with a small amount of mild soap, as directed by the applicable manual. Do not improvise a strong chemical mixture.
- Wipe with the grain. Move the damp soft cloth in the direction of the brushed pattern. This helps keep any remaining marks aligned with the existing texture.
- Remove residue. Use a second cloth dampened with clean water if soap remains on the surface.
- Dry immediately. Buff gently with a clean, dry cloth to prevent water spots and streaks.
- Inspect before using another product. If marks remain, consult the manual rather than escalating to a stronger cleaner.
Products and tools to avoid
Scouring pads, steel wool and abrasive powders can scratch either finish. On a coated panel, a scratch can cut through or roughen the clear layer, leaving a visible change in sheen. Harsh cleaners can also dull the coating. Depending on the model, the manual may specifically prohibit stainless-steel polish, vinegar, bleach, ammonia or other chemicals; those prohibitions are not universal, so use the exact list for your appliance.

GE states that its fingerprint-resistant surface does not require a special stainless-steel cleaner. That advice is different from a blanket endorsement of every household cleaner. If your manual names a permitted product, follow that instruction; otherwise, mild soap and warm water are the lower-risk choice described by the reviewed guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy drying matters
Water and soap left on a panel can dry into streaks that look like a finish defect. Drying also prevents repeated rubbing later, when mineral deposits may require more pressure to remove. Use a separate dry cloth for the final pass instead of allowing the surface to air-dry.
Fingerprints, smudges and what the claim does not promise
“Fingerprint-resistant” describes reduced visibility of marks, not immunity from them. Oils, cooking residue and dust can still appear, particularly on high-touch areas such as handles and dispenser controls. The reviewed manufacturer material contains no standardized percentage for fingerprint reduction and no cross-brand test ranking.
Performance can vary with lighting, viewing angle, the color of the coating, how much pressure is used while touching the door and how often the surface is cleaned. A coated finish may look cleaner between wipe-downs, but it still needs routine cleaning.
Scratches, scuffs and repair limits
What can happen to a coated finish
Abrasive cleaning, jewelry, cookware, pet claws or a hard object dragged across the door can mark the clear coat. Because the coating changes the surface sheen, a shallow scuff may be visible even when the underlying steel is intact. Sanding or polishing the area can enlarge the affected patch and create a different gloss from the surrounding panel.

GE’s stated approach
GE says its recommended cleaning method may reduce the appearance of scratches. GE does not provide an approved cover-up repair method for heavy or more visible scratches on its fingerprint-resistant finish. That means a homeowner should not assume that a generic stainless touch-up pen, abrasive polish or home refinishing method is manufacturer-approved.

For a prominent mark, photograph the damage, record the model and serial numbers, and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Ask whether the specific exterior panel is replaceable and whether the damage is covered by the warranty. Warranty coverage and panel availability depend on the model and the cause of damage.
How to verify a model before buying
Retail listings often shorten finish names, so use the manufacturer’s specification page and owner’s manual as the controlling documents. Check these items before placing an order:
- Exact finish name: Confirm whether the model is called fingerprint-resistant, smudge-proof, satin, slate, black stainless or another branded finish.
- Surface-care section: Look for permitted cloths, cleaners and prohibited products.
- Panel construction: Determine whether the manufacturer describes a clear coat or another treatment. Do not infer the construction from the marketing name alone.
- Appearance notes: Check whether the maker warns that panels may vary in tone or reflectivity.
- Installation rating: Verify that the appliance is listed for the intended indoor or outdoor location.
- Warranty terms: Review exclusions for cosmetic damage, scratches, improper cleaning and installation outside the rated environment.
- Replacement information: Find out whether exterior panels or handles can be ordered if damage occurs.
If the manual is unavailable, contact the manufacturer with the full model number. A generic stainless-cleaning guide from another model is not a reliable substitute.
Indoor versus outdoor installation
Stainless steel’s corrosion resistance does not, by itself, establish that an appliance can live outdoors. Outdoor appliances are engineered and rated for weather, temperature swings, moisture and, in some cases, ultraviolet exposure. An indoor appliance may lack those protections even if its exterior is stainless.
GE specifically states that its clear coat does not make an appliance designed for indoor use suitable for outdoor use. Before installing any model in a garage, patio, porch or outdoor kitchen, check the installation guide for an explicit outdoor rating and the environmental limits. Installing an indoor unit outside can affect safety, performance and warranty coverage.
Are fingerprint-resistant finishes more durable?
The reviewed manufacturer information does not establish a universal durability advantage. The coating may reduce the need for frequent wiping, but it introduces a surface layer that can be scratched or dulled by unsuitable tools and chemicals. Traditional uncoated stainless can also scratch, and its appearance may change if the grain is polished incorrectly.

Do not treat a finish label as a laboratory rating. No named statistic, coating-life figure or standardized fingerprint test was identified in the reviewed material. Claims about a specific percentage fewer fingerprints or a guaranteed number of years would require evidence for the exact brand, model and test conditions.
Which finish should you choose?
Choose a fingerprint-resistant finish when
- The appliance is in a busy kitchen where door panels are touched repeatedly.
- You prefer a slightly softer, satin appearance and want less obvious marks between cleanings.
- You are willing to follow coating-specific care instructions and avoid abrasive products.
- You can compare the finish with neighboring appliances from the same manufacturer and confirm that the tones work together.
Choose traditional stainless when
- You prefer a more reflective, conventional stainless appearance.
- You want an exposed-metal finish and are comfortable wiping visible marks regularly.
- You need to coordinate with existing appliances whose finish is explicitly uncoated stainless.
- The exact model’s manual offers care instructions that better fit your cleaning routine.
Neither choice is automatically better. The practical trade-off is a different surface appearance and care requirement, not a guaranteed difference in steel quality.

Correction: Clean as needed with the approved mild solution and dry after each pass.
Trying to hide a deep scratch with an abrasive product
Problem: The repair attempt can enlarge the damaged area or change its gloss.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Correction: Photograph the mark and ask the manufacturer or authorized service provider about an approved panel repair or replacement. GE does not list a cover-up method for heavy scratches on its fingerprint-resistant finish.
Installing an indoor model outside
Problem: A stainless exterior or clear coat is mistaken for an outdoor rating.
Correction: Verify the installation guide’s environmental rating before installation. If it is not explicitly outdoor-rated, choose a model designed for that location.
Key takeaways for comparing listings
| What a listing says | What you should verify |
|---|---|
| “Fingerprint-resistant stainless” | Whether the maker specifies a clear coat, and which cleaners are allowed. |
| “Smudge-proof” or “easy-clean” | The manufacturer’s definition; these terms are not a universal material standard. |
| “Stainless steel” | Whether the panel is coated, uncoated or another branded finish. |
| “Outdoor-ready” | An explicit outdoor installation rating, not merely a stainless exterior. |
The most reliable comparison is model-specific: read the manual, inspect the finish under your lighting, and plan to use the approved cleaning routine. A fingerprint-resistant appliance can make everyday marks less conspicuous, while traditional stainless offers the familiar exposed-metal look. The label alone does not establish alloy, coating formula, scratch lifespan, outdoor suitability or a universal performance ranking.
