For routine cleaning of a traditional stainless-steel appliance, mild dish soap diluted in warm water is usually the best first choice. It removes dust, fingerprints, light grease and food film without adding a polishing residue. A dedicated stainless-steel cleaner is optional when you want extra shine or need to tackle persistent fingerprints, oil buildup or water spots on a finish that the product label and appliance manual approve.
There is no manufacturer-backed evidence here that specialty cleaner cleans ordinary daily soil better than dish soap. The important variables are the appliance’s exact finish, the cloth and technique you use, and whether you dry the surface completely. Black stainless, anti-fingerprint coatings and laminate look-alike finishes can require different treatment.
The short answer
Use mild dish soap and warm or lukewarm water for normal wiping. Apply the solution with a soft, nonabrasive or microfiber cloth, move in the direction of the grain, and dry the panel fully. This routine is supported by care guidance from GE Appliances, Whirlpool and Bosch.
Choose a stainless-steel spray, cream or appliance cleaner only for a compatible traditional stainless surface when you want to polish, reduce stubborn fingerprints or remove residue that a gentle wash leaves behind. Follow the appliance manual before using it; a product that is safe on bare stainless can damage black or coated steel.

Dish soap and stainless cleaner compared
| Cleaning need | Dish soap and water | Dedicated stainless-steel cleaner | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily dust, fingerprints and light grime | Mild soap diluted in warm or lukewarm water; use a soft cloth. | Usually unnecessary for a normal wipe. | Start with dish soap. |
| Polishing a compatible traditional stainless panel | Cleans but may not leave a polished appearance. | Spray or cream products are designed to improve shine. | Use cleaner only if the manual and label allow it. |
| Persistent fingerprints or oil film | May require several gentle passes. | Whirlpool identifies stainless cleaner as an option for fingerprints and oil buildup. | Try soap first; use a compatible cleaner for remaining residue. |
| Water spots or food residue | Often removes the deposit when followed by appropriate rinsing and thorough drying. | Whirlpool lists cleaner as a possible aid for water spots and food buildup. | Escalate carefully, without abrasive scrubbing. |
| Black stainless, anti-fingerprint or smudge-proof steel | Often the safer default, but model instructions control. | Traditional polish may be prohibited. | Follow the finish-specific manual; do not assume a standard stainless product is safe. |
These are care recommendations, not results from a controlled head-to-head performance test. The cited manufacturer pages do not publish a measured cleaning advantage for one method over the other.
Why dish soap is the sensible daily method
It matches manufacturer routine-care instructions
GE states that regular daily maintenance can use “a solution of mild soap (dish soap) and water.” Whirlpool recommends warm, soapy water and liquid detergent for traditional stainless surfaces, applied with a nonabrasive sponge and followed by drying with a soft or microfiber cloth. Bosch likewise specifies lukewarm water and mild soap with a soft cloth.
It leaves less product behind
A daily cleaner or polish can leave an oily film if too much is applied or if it is not buffed off. Diluted soap targets water-soluble grime and kitchen grease, and you can remove remaining solution with a clean damp cloth when the appliance instructions call for rinsing.

It is easier to control
You can make a small amount of solution for one panel instead of spraying the appliance directly. That limits overspray around controls, seams and adjacent materials. The cloth, rather than a harsh chemical, does most of the work.
When a dedicated stainless-steel cleaner is useful
Polishing a compatible traditional finish
Specialty products can improve the uniformity and sheen of conventional, uncoated stainless steel after cleaning. They are an optional finishing step, not a requirement for removing ordinary fingerprints.
Removing persistent oil and fingerprints
Whirlpool describes stainless-steel spray or cream cleaners as useful for fingerprints, oil buildup, water spots and food buildup. If a soapy wash has removed the soil but the panel still shows a stubborn oily haze, a compatible cleaner may save repeated wiping.
Using a named appliance product
GE identifies Cerama Bryte Stainless Steel Appliance Cleaner, part PM10X311, as one of its stainless-care products. Its use is still conditional on the appliance finish and the product directions; the existence of a named product does not make every cleaner safe for every model.

Identify the finish before you clean
Traditional stainless steel
This is the surface for which the routine soap-and-water method and compatible stainless polish are generally intended. Confirm the model instructions, because appliances that look similar can have different coatings.
Black stainless steel
GE says its black stainless finish should be cleaned with mild dish soap and water and warns against traditional stainless cleaners. Treat that warning as finish-specific: do not transfer a polish recommendation from a conventional stainless refrigerator to a black stainless range.
Smudge-proof or anti-fingerprint steel
Bosch excludes smudge-proof, anti-fingerprint and black steel from use of its stainless conditioner. A product marketed for “stainless steel” may therefore be unsuitable for a coated panel. The owner’s manual and the cleaner label take priority over a generic recipe.
Laminate or look-alike finishes
GE’s CleanSteel surface is a laminate-vinyl look-alike rather than conventional stainless and has separate cleaning directions. GE says that finish was discontinued in its major-appliance line in 2015, but existing appliances may still be in use. Treat the material as a coating, not as bare metal, and follow the model guidance at GE CleanSteel Appliances.
Safe routine-cleaning procedure
- Confirm the material. Look up the model manual and identify whether the panel is traditional stainless, black stainless, anti-fingerprint, smudge-proof or a laminate finish. Do not start with polish when the finish is uncertain.
- Prepare a mild solution. Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with warm or lukewarm water. Avoid making a heavily concentrated mixture, which is harder to remove cleanly.
- Use a soft cloth. A clean microfiber or other nonabrasive cloth is appropriate. Do not use a rough scouring pad, steel wool or a steel brush.
- Wipe with the grain. Follow the visible direction of the steel pattern using light pressure. Working across the grain can make streaks more noticeable and increases the chance that trapped grit will drag across the finish.
- Handle residue as directed. If the appliance instructions call for rinsing, use a clean damp cloth to remove soap. Do not flood seams, electronic controls, vents or gaskets.
- Dry completely. Use a fresh soft cloth to remove water and remaining moisture. Complete drying is especially important for preventing water marks.
- Inspect before escalating. If the panel is clean but lacks the appearance you want, consult the manual and consider a compatible stainless product rather than scrubbing harder.
How to apply a dedicated cleaner
Read the label and appliance manual first, then test an inconspicuous area if the finish instructions permit testing. Keep the product off painted surfaces, plastic trim, controls and rubber gaskets; Whirlpool specifically warns that stainless polish is not intended for those parts.
GE Cerama Bryte PM10X311 directions
- Shake the bottle.
- Place a small amount on a damp cloth or paper towel rather than spraying indiscriminately over the appliance.
- Work on a small area, following the grain where a grain is visible.
- Dry the area and buff it with a clean, dry towel or soft cloth.
Use this process only on a finish identified as compatible. More product is not better: excess cleaner makes buffing harder and can leave an uneven film.
Match the method to the mess
Fingerprints
Begin with the mild soap solution and a soft cloth. Use a fresh dry cloth for the final pass so moisture does not turn a clean panel into a field of streaks. If an oily mark remains on compatible traditional stainless, a small amount of approved cleaner can be used and buffed dry.

Grease or cooking oil
Give the soap solution time to loosen the film, then make several light passes instead of pressing harder. A specialty cleaner is an optional second step for residue that remains after washing.

Start gently, then remove any cleaner or soap residue required by the instructions and dry the surface fully. Water spots often become more visible when a panel is left damp.
Dried food
Soften the deposit with a damp cloth before wiping. Avoid picking at it with a blade or abrasive pad. Whirlpool lists food buildup among situations in which a stainless cleaner may help, but the finish still determines which product is safe.
Rust-colored marks
Do not attack a mark with steel wool or a steel brush. GE’s rust-cleaning guidance warns against those tools because they can scratch the surface and leave particles that rust. Identify the cause and use only a method approved for the appliance’s finish.
Products and tools to avoid
- Abrasives: steel wool, steel brushes, abrasive powders, rough pads and scratchy cloths can permanently mark the finish. They can also leave iron particles that later rust.
- Harsh chemicals: GE cautions against bleach, ammonia, acids and commercial oven cleaners for its stainless surfaces. Use such products only when a specific manual explicitly permits them.
- Chlorine cleaners: Bosch cautions against chlorine-based cleaners and abrasive sponges on stainless exteriors.
- Vinegar- and citrus-based cleaners: Whirlpool warns against these cleaners for finishes covered by its product-help guidance.
- Traditional polish on black stainless: GE specifically warns against it for its black stainless finish.
- Polish on adjacent materials: Keep stainless products away from plastic, trim and rubber gaskets.
What the manufacturers specify
| Manufacturer guidance | Routine method | Important restrictions or options |
|---|---|---|
| GE Appliances | Mild dish soap and water for regular maintenance. | Lists stainless cleaner and wipes; warns against steel wool, abrasives, bleach, ammonia, acids and commercial oven cleaners. |
| Whirlpool | Warm, soapy water and liquid detergent with a nonabrasive sponge; dry with a soft or microfiber cloth. | Spray or cream cleaner may help fingerprints, oil, water spots and food buildup; consult the manual first and keep polish off plastic, trim and gaskets. |
| Bosch | Lukewarm water and mild soap with a soft cloth, wiping with the grain. | Avoid abrasives, chlorine cleaners and abrasive sponges; conditioner is not for smudge-proof, anti-fingerprint or black steel. |
GE also provides separate instructions for black stainless at GE Black Stainless. Those finish-specific directions are why a generic “best stainless cleaner” recommendation can be unsafe.
Practical trade-offs before you choose
Cleaning versus polishing
Dish soap is primarily a cleaning step: it loosens ordinary soil so it can be wiped away. A stainless-steel spray or cream adds a polishing step after, or instead of, washing. If the panel is clean but you want a more uniform sheen, the specialty product may be useful on compatible traditional stainless. If the panel is simply dirty, polish adds complexity without addressing the need for a different cleaning method.
Control the amount of product
Both methods work best when applied to the cloth rather than flooded across the appliance. A controlled amount reduces drips into seams, controls and vents. This is especially important with a cream or oily polish, which must be buffed completely to avoid a cloudy film. Working in a small area also lets you see whether the finish reacts badly before you continue.

Use separate cloths for washing and buffing
A cloth used to remove grease can hold grit and leave streaks during the final pass. A second, clean soft cloth gives you a better chance of removing moisture and residue. Keep cloths free of metal particles and wash them according to their care instructions before reusing them on a visible panel.
Do not confuse appearance with damage
Some haze is leftover soap or polish and can be removed with the approved mild method. A scratch, etched spot or coating failure is different; repeated rubbing will not restore it and can enlarge the defect. Stop, identify the finish and consult the manufacturer when the appearance does not improve with gentle cleaning.
A quick pre-cleaning checklist
- Locate the appliance model number and manual.
- Confirm whether the surface is bare traditional stainless, black stainless, anti-fingerprint, smudge-proof or laminate.
- Read both the appliance instructions and the cleaner label.
- Gather a mild dish soap, warm or lukewarm water, a soft cloth and a separate dry cloth.
- Keep polish away from plastic, painted trim, controls and rubber gaskets.
- Plan to work with the grain and dry the entire area.
Troubleshooting streaks, haze and damage
Streaks after cleaning
Use less soap, work in smaller sections and finish with a dry soft cloth. Streaks commonly come from excess solution or incomplete drying rather than a need for stronger chemicals.
Cloudy or oily haze
Remove old product residue with the mild method allowed by the manual. On compatible traditional stainless, apply only a small amount of approved cleaner and buff it completely. Do not polish a black or coated finish to correct a haze until the manufacturer confirms compatibility.
Scratches
Stop using abrasive tools. Cleaning cannot reverse a scratch, and rubbing harder can enlarge it. Future care should use a clean, soft cloth and the grain direction.
Cleaner on a gasket or plastic part
Wipe the affected area promptly with a clean damp cloth if the appliance instructions permit, then dry it. Avoid deliberately applying stainless polish to those materials; Whirlpool says the product is intended for stainless surfaces, not plastic, trim or rubber.
How to choose in one minute
- If the surface is traditional stainless and the soil is ordinary: use diluted mild dish soap and warm water.
- If the surface is traditional stainless but a clean panel still needs polishing or has stubborn oil: check the manual, then use a compatible stainless cleaner sparingly.
- If the surface is black, anti-fingerprint, smudge-proof or laminate: use the finish-specific instructions and assume traditional polish is unsuitable until confirmed otherwise.
- Whatever method you use: soft cloth, grain direction, controlled application and complete drying are non-negotiable parts of a safe routine.
Bottom line
Dish soap wins for everyday appliance cleaning because it is simple and supported by major manufacturers for many traditional stainless surfaces. Stainless-steel cleaner is a specialized finishing option for compatible surfaces, not a daily necessity. The appliance manual and finish type should decide whether you ever use it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use dish soap on every stainless-steel appliance?
Use it only where the appliance instructions permit it. GE, Whirlpool and Bosch support mild soap or soapy water for many traditional stainless surfaces, but black stainless, anti-fingerprint coatings and laminate finishes can have separate rules.
Do I need to rinse after using dish soap?
Follow the model instructions. If rinsing is called for, wipe with a clean damp cloth, then dry completely with a soft cloth so soap and water do not leave residue or spots.
Is stainless-steel cleaner better than dish soap for fingerprints?
Not necessarily. Start with mild soap and water. Whirlpool identifies spray or cream cleaner as an optional aid for persistent fingerprints, oil buildup, water spots and food buildup on compatible surfaces.
