Stacks’ STX token has been associated with a roughly 50% September 2026 gain, but the available report does not publish reproducible start-and-end prices for the exact four-week window in the headline. A stronger, dated comparison comes from the Stacks Treasury Committee’s October 5 update: STX rose approximately 65% in the third quarter of 2026, while bitcoin rose 31%. On October 6, crypto.news reported STX near $0.38 after an approximately 18% gain over the preceding week. Those are different measurement periods, not interchangeable proof of a continuing 50% surge.
What happened to STX?
The rally accelerated during the third quarter. According to the Stacks Treasury Committee’s October 5, 2026 update, STX gained about 65% in Q3, outperforming bitcoin’s 31% rise by roughly 34 percentage points. The committee also reported that STX reached $0.118 on August 18 before rising 113% into the end of August, and that average daily trading volume increased from $7.7 million to $14.9 million.
A separate CryptoNews report described a 50% gain in September. Because that report did not provide exact daily opening and closing observations for the four-week period implied by the headline, treat the figure as a dated media claim rather than an independently reproducible calculation. Crypto.news’ October 6 snapshot put STX around $0.38 after gains of about 18% in the prior week; a market snapshot is not a live quote.

Why is STX going up?
The clearest change coinciding with the move is the launch of Bitcoin Staking. The Stacks Treasury Committee said the product moved from roadmap to live operation in Q3 2026 as institutional participation expanded. Contemporary coverage also pointed to broader Stacks ecosystem activity and institutional interest in bitcoin. These are plausible contributors, not proof that one announcement caused the entire price move.

The same committee update described a wider crypto-market recovery and positive institutional bitcoin flows. It estimated $8.9 billion of institutional bitcoin purchases against $4.1 billion of sales, for a net inflow of $4.8 billion. A rising market can lift related assets, so STX’s outperformance should not be attributed solely to staking.

What Stacks is—and what it is not
Stacks is a separate blockchain layer connected to Bitcoin through Proof of Transfer. Its smart contracts and applications run on Stacks while Stacks blocks are anchored to Bitcoin, so developers can build Bitcoin-connected applications without changing Bitcoin’s base protocol. STX is the native asset of that network; it is not bitcoin and does not represent BTC.

What is the STX token used for?
- Transaction fees: STX is used to pay fees on the Stacks network.
- Protocol incentives: Official Stacks materials identify STX incentives for miners and peg-out signers.
- Bitcoin Staking capacity: Participants bond STX alongside BTC to use the staking system.
- Network participation: STX is the native asset used by applications and protocol mechanisms built on Stacks.
Utility can create reasons to hold or lock STX, but it does not guarantee that demand will exceed selling pressure or that the token price will rise.
Does Bitcoin Staking create demand for STX?
It creates a stated requirement for participation. Stacks’ current product description says a Bitcoin Staking bond locks STX worth at least 5% of the bonded BTC’s value. If participation grows, that rule can increase the amount of STX committed to the mechanism. The actual market effect depends on the number and size of bonds, how long tokens remain locked, participant behavior, available liquidity and the broader crypto market.

Bitcoin Staking also introduces additional uncertainty. Stacks warns that staking-capacity use involves smart-contract and reward risks. A bond requirement is therefore a demand mechanism, not an appreciation promise.

Stacks Labs reported sBTC supply of 2,949 BTC at the end of Q2 2026. That figure measures BTC represented in the Stacks ecosystem; it is not the supply of STX and should not be read as a price target for either asset.

Is the ecosystem growing?
Stacks Labs reported 1,601,594 active wallets in Q2 2026 and said newly active wallets increased from 72,000 in Q1 to 110,000 in Q2. Those are project-reported network activity measures using the methodology described by Stacks Labs, not the same thing as verified unique people, paying customers or token holders. They indicate usage momentum but cannot by themselves establish investment value.
Key risks before buying STX
Volatility and liquidity
Large percentage gains can reverse quickly. The Treasury Committee’s volume figures show deeper reported trading activity during the rally, but STX liquidity varies by venue and market conditions. A quoted price may not be available at the same level for a large order.
No fixed supply cap under the described governance process
Stacks’ FAQ says STX has no fixed maximum supply under its described governance process. Future issuance and distribution decisions can therefore affect scarcity assumptions. Review current tokenomics and governance disclosures rather than treating a past rally as evidence of limited supply.

Separate-chain and smart-contract risk
Stacks is not Bitcoin’s base layer. Users face the technical, operational and smart-contract risks of an additional network, including risks around moving BTC into or out of applications and around staking rewards. Bitcoin’s security and market behavior do not eliminate those risks.
Market-wide risk
The reported Q3 performance occurred alongside a broader crypto recovery and institutional bitcoin inflows. If those conditions weaken, STX can fall even if Stacks usage or staking participation continues to grow.
