Stablecoins are not automatically the cheapest way to send money internationally. The blockchain transaction may cost only a few cents, yet buying the stablecoin, converting currencies, selling it for local money and paying it out can raise the all-in cost above Wise, Western Union or a bank. Compare the recipient’s final usable amount and delivery time for the exact corridor, not the network fee in isolation.

Recent evidence illustrates the spread. A July 2026 Banca d’Italia mystery-shopping study of 200 USDC transfers across ten Italy-linked corridors found total costs from 0.30% to almost 9%, with on- and off-ramp friction responsible for most of the expense. The World Bank reported a 6.36% global average remittance cost in Q3 2025 and a 14.99% average for banks. Those are benchmarks, not quotes for every route, so a live, like-for-like calculation remains essential.

What to compare when sending a remittance

For any method, calculate the amount the recipient can actually withdraw or spend in local currency. A useful equation is:

Recipient amount = (sender funds − funding fees − service fees) × effective exchange rate − network, payout and withdrawal charges.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Also record the elapsed time from the sender’s successful payment to the recipient’s access to local money. A transfer that confirms on-chain in seconds is not fast if the recipient waits two business days for a bank credit.

  • All-in cost: percentage fees, fixed charges, foreign-exchange spread, blockchain gas, cash-out and payout fees.
  • Exchange rate: compare the quoted rate with a transparent mid-market reference.
  • Delivery format: bank account, mobile wallet, debit card or cash pickup.
  • Availability: supported countries, currencies, limits, identity checks and compliance holds.
  • Protection and reversals: what happens if a payment is rejected, a wallet address is wrong or a provider freezes an account.
  • Recipient capability: whether the recipient can safely hold a stablecoin and convert it without relying on an unsuitable exchange or wallet.

The lowest headline fee can still produce the smallest payout when its exchange rate or cash-out charge is poor.

Side-by-side comparison

Method Where costs usually arise Exchange-rate treatment Typical delivery choices What determines speed
Stablecoin transfer Fiat on-ramp, blockchain fee, spread between currencies, off-ramp, withdrawal or payout fee Depends on the exchange, market maker or ramp; a token pegged to the US dollar does not remove the local-currency conversion Recipient wallet followed by bank, wallet, card or cash conversion Network confirmation plus local payment rails and compliance checks
Wise Currency-dependent percentage fee, possible minimum for small transfers and payment-method charges Wise says it uses the mid-market rate without marking it up Usually bank account or Wise balance; some routes support additional local methods Payment method, currencies, destination banking system and any intermediary leg
Western Union Displayed transfer fee plus exchange-rate margin; card funding can cost more Rate and fee vary by destination, funding method, payout method and speed Cash pickup, bank account, debit-card payout or mobile wallet Chosen payout channel, destination and funding method
Bank transfer Sending-bank fee, correspondent-bank charges, receiving-bank fee and FX spread Set by the banks involved and may be less transparent than a mid-market quote Bank account, normally through domestic or international rails Cut-off times, correspondent routing, weekends and local clearing

How stablecoin remittance costs accumulate

1. Fiat on-ramp

The sender first exchanges dollars, euros or another fiat currency for a stablecoin. The ramp may charge a percentage, a fixed card fee or both. Card purchases can be more expensive than bank funding, and a provider may impose a minimum fee that makes a small remittance disproportionately costly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Blockchain transaction

The wallet sends the token across a particular network. Gas is real, but it is often a small part of the total in the corridors studied by Banca d’Italia. The fee depends on the network, congestion and whether the service batches transactions. A low gas quote therefore says little about the recipient’s final local-currency amount.

3. Stablecoin-to-fiat conversion

The recipient, an intermediary or an exchange sells the token for local currency. This step introduces a trading spread, a percentage commission or both. Liquidity differs by token, network and country; a dollar-pegged asset may still have a wide local-currency market.

4. Off-ramp and payout

Moving the converted funds to a bank account, mobile wallet, card or cash location can add a fixed charge, a percentage fee, withdrawal limits or a compliance review. Some services require a separate account and identity verification before releasing local currency.

5. Foreign-exchange spread

If the sender funds in one currency and the recipient spends in another, the conversion spread can exceed the blockchain fee by an order of magnitude. Measure the effective rate by dividing the recipient’s net local currency by the sender’s total debit, then compare that rate with a mid-market reference at the same timestamp.

What the July 2026 Banca d’Italia study found

Banca d’Italia conducted a mystery-shopping exercise covering 200 USDC transfers across ten corridors linking Italy with Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and Japan. Total costs ranged from 0.30% to nearly 9% of the amount sent. The on-chain leg was only a marginal share; on- and off-ramp friction drove most of the cost and delay.

The study found no systematic cost advantage over traditional channels. Results varied by corridor, provider and payment path, so the figures should not be treated as a universal stablecoin tariff. They do show why a comparison that lists only gas is incomplete.

Speed was equally heterogeneous. Where instant-payment systems were available, end-to-end settlement finished in under 20 minutes. Routes requiring standard bank transfers took one to two business days. A fast blockchain confirmation did not guarantee fast access to local money.

How Wise prices a transfer

Wise states that the final cost depends on the amount, how the sender pays, the currencies and the exchange rate. Its normal charge is percentage-based, with currency-specific pricing and minimums that matter more on small transfers. Wise says it uses the mid-market exchange rate and does not mark that rate up.

What to record from a Wise quote

  • The exact amount debited from the sender.
  • The displayed fee, including any minimum or payment-method surcharge.
  • The exchange rate and the local-currency amount the recipient receives.
  • The promised arrival date and whether it changes for weekends or verification.
  • Whether the recipient receives funds in a bank account, a Wise balance or another supported destination.

Because Wise pricing is dynamic, save the quote time and currency pair when comparing it with another method. A percentage that looks low can still lose to a rival if the rival delivers more local currency.

How Western Union pricing works

Western Union’s fee information explains that price and delivery time vary with destination, funding method and payout method. Cash pickup, bank-account delivery, debit-card payout and mobile-wallet delivery can all produce different fees and arrival times. Funding with a card may cost more because of processing costs.

There is no universal Western Union fee to apply to every country pair. Use the live quote for the exact sending country, destination, amount, funding source and payout choice. Record both the explicit fee and the exchange rate; the latter can materially change the recipient’s result.

When Western Union may fit better

  • The recipient needs cash pickup rather than a bank account.
  • The destination has limited access to digital-asset exchanges or wallets.
  • The sender values an established dispute and agent network over self-custody.
  • A particular corridor has a promotional quote or faster payout than its alternatives.

Why bank transfers can be expensive

The World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide report for Q3 2025 put the global average remittance cost at 6.36%, down from 6.49% in Q1 2025. Banks were the most expensive provider type in that comparison, averaging 14.99%.

These are cross-corridor averages, not a quote for your bank. A bank transfer can include a sending fee, one or more correspondent-bank deductions, a receiving fee and an FX spread. Ask whether the quoted amount is “OUR,” “SHA” or “BEN” where those international-payment conventions apply, because they determine who bears intermediary charges.

Bank rails can nevertheless be practical when both parties already hold suitable accounts, the transfer is large enough to dilute fixed fees, or regulatory and consumer-protection requirements favor a bank. Check cut-off times and holidays: a transfer submitted after the daily window can wait until the next business day.

Worked example: comparing a $200 remittance

The following is an illustrative calculation, not a live quote. It demonstrates the accounting a sender should perform for a $200 transfer from a US-dollar account to a recipient who ultimately needs local currency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Illustrative stablecoin component Assumption Dollar impact
Fiat on-ramp 1.0% of $200 $2.00
Network fee One-time gas charge $0.20
FX spread 0.5% applied during conversion $1.00
Off-ramp 1.5% of the converted value $3.00
Payout fee Fixed local withdrawal charge $1.00
Total illustrative cost $2 + $0.20 + $1 + $3 + $1 $7.20 (3.6%)

Under those assumptions, the recipient receives the local-currency equivalent of approximately $192.80 at the applied exchange rate. If the off-ramp waives its fee, the result improves by $3; if a card-funded on-ramp charges more, it worsens. The point is to expose every component, not to predict a provider’s price.

For Wise, Western Union and a bank, enter the same $200 amount and destination into each live calculator, then place the quoted recipient amount beside the stablecoin result. Do not substitute a network fee for any missing on-ramp, off-ramp or FX value.

Step-by-step method for finding the cheapest route

  1. Define the corridor. Write the sending country and currency, destination country and currency, amount, and the recipient’s preferred delivery format.
  2. Set the timing requirement. Decide whether under 20 minutes is necessary or whether one to two business days is acceptable.
  3. Capture live traditional quotes. Obtain a Wise quote and a Western Union quote using the same amount, funding method and payout method. Ask the bank for the all-in amount, including correspondent and receiving charges.
  4. Specify the stablecoin path. Name the asset (for example, USDC), network, on-ramp, exchange or wallet, off-ramp, FX venue and final payout rail. A comparison that omits one of these is not reproducible.
  5. Convert every charge to one currency. Include percentages, fixed fees, gas, card charges and withdrawal costs. Apply the actual exchange rate at each conversion.
  6. Calculate the recipient’s net amount. Use the final local-currency payout, not the token balance shown before cash-out.
  7. Check operational constraints. Confirm identity requirements, transaction limits, supported banks or wallets, compliance holds and what happens if a payment is rejected.
  8. Compare time and risk with price. Select the route that meets the recipient’s deadline and capability at an acceptable all-in cost.

Speed: blockchain finality versus usable money

Blockchain confirmation measures only the token transfer. The recipient may still need to pass an exchange review, wait for a local bank batch, or travel to a cash-pickup location. Instant domestic payment rails can make the full process quick; standard bank legs can take one to two business days, as the Banca d’Italia exercise observed.

Ask providers for an end-to-end estimate that starts when the sender’s funds clear and ends when the recipient can withdraw or spend the money. “Instant transfer” labels often describe only one leg.

Corridor decision framework

Choose a stablecoin route when

  • Both countries have liquid, regulated on- and off-ramps for the chosen asset.
  • The recipient can securely manage a wallet and convert to local currency.
  • The combined ramp, FX and payout costs beat the live alternatives.
  • Local instant-payment infrastructure supports rapid cash-out.

Choose Wise when

  • The route is supported and the quote shows a competitive net payout.
  • You value a published mid-market-rate policy and a straightforward bank-account delivery.
  • The amount is small enough that a stablecoin ramp minimum would dominate.

Choose Western Union when

  • Cash pickup, mobile-wallet delivery or a broad agent network is important.
  • The recipient lacks a suitable bank account or digital-asset account.
  • The live quote and delivery promise are better for the particular funding and payout combination.

Choose a bank when

  • Existing accounts and local rails make fixed charges predictable.
  • The transfer is large enough to absorb fixed fees and the bank offers a narrow FX spread.
  • Formal bank records, established support and local regulation outweigh a potentially higher price.

Risks, requirements and failure points

Wrong network or address

Sending a token on an unsupported network, or to an incorrect address, can make recovery impossible. Confirm the network and destination format with the receiving service before sending a material amount, and make a small test transfer when the provider permits it.

Liquidity and depegging

A stablecoin targets a reference currency but can trade above or below it. Thin local markets can add slippage, especially during volatile periods. Price the actual conversion pair rather than assuming one token always equals one dollar.

Account reviews and limits

On-ramps, exchanges and banks may request identity or source-of-funds information, pause a transaction or impose daily limits. A theoretically cheap route is unsuitable if the recipient cannot complete verification before the deadline.

Irreversibility and consumer protection

Blockchain transfers are generally difficult to reverse. Traditional remittance providers and banks may offer established complaint, cancellation or fraud processes that a self-custody wallet does not. Include that difference in the decision, even when the numerical fee is lower.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tax and reporting obligations

Rules for digital assets, foreign exchange and remittances differ by jurisdiction. Check the sender’s and recipient’s local requirements before using a stablecoin route, particularly for repeated or business payments.

Western Union’s announced USDPT initiative

Western Union announced USDPT, a US-dollar payment stablecoin on Solana, as part of a planned 2026 digital-infrastructure rollout. An announcement is not proof that the service is available in a particular country or that it will be cheaper than existing payout methods. Verify live availability, supported corridors, fees, custody arrangements and cash-out options before treating it as an alternative.
