The best Wi-Fi for gaming is the connection that stays stable and keeps latency low—not necessarily the one with the highest advertised speed. Use Ethernet if practical. If you need Wi-Fi, improve the signal between your device and router, limit avoidable interference and congestion, and make sure both devices support the features you expect to use. A newer Wi-Fi generation cannot guarantee low ping to a distant game server or fix an unstable internet connection.

What matters most for online gaming?

Gaming traffic does not usually require the highest possible download speed, but it is sensitive to delays and interruptions. Latency describes the time data takes to travel between your device and the game server. The route through your home network and internet service provider matters, as does the server’s distance from you. Choosing a nearby server when the game allows it can reduce the distance data has to travel.

Stability matters too. A connection that fluctuates or becomes congested can feel worse than one with a lower headline speed but more consistent performance. Your ISP plan, modem, router, gaming device, and the connection between the device and router all contribute. Replacing only the router will not address every possible source of lag.

Is Wi-Fi or Ethernet better for gaming?

Ethernet is a sensible first choice when running a cable to your gaming device is practical. It avoids the wireless signal’s exposure to distance, walls, and radio interference. Check that the router’s Ethernet port can support the speed you need from your internet plan, and use a cable suited to that connection.

Wi-Fi can still work well, especially when the device has a strong, steady signal and the network is not heavily congested. Its results depend on the distance and obstacles between the device and router, other wireless traffic, and the capabilities of both devices. Intel’s guidance is to prioritize low latency and a stable connection alongside fast upload and download speeds, whether using wired or wireless internet: Intel’s wired-versus-wireless gaming guide.

How to tell whether Wi-Fi is causing the lag

Compare the gaming device near the router with its usual location. If possible, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet under similar conditions. If performance improves near the router or on a cable, the local wireless link may be part of the problem. If it does not, the cause may lie elsewhere in the home network, the ISP connection, or the route to the game server. These comparisons are useful diagnostics, not a standardized test that can identify every cause.

ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BE98 Pro WiFi 7 Gaming Router - Quad-Band, 30Gbps, Mesh
  • Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) with new 320MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and 4096-QAM significantly increases network capacity and throughput, with speeds of up to 30 Gbps
  • Multi-link Operation links to multiple bands at the same time to ensure stable internet connections and efficient data transfers
  • Cutting-edge external dual-feeding antennas boost coverage by providing high efficiency and significantly enhanced signal strength
  • Maximized wired connectivity and flexibility with dual 10G ports and quad 2.5G ports
  • Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.
  • Check whether the signal is weak at the device’s normal location; distance and walls can reduce wireless performance.
  • Notice whether lag gets worse when other household devices are using the connection. Congestion can affect the experience even when the router is nearby.
  • Compare more than one location or connection type when feasible. A router upgrade is less likely to help if the source of the problem is outside the Wi-Fi link.

Which Wi-Fi generation do you need?

Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, and Wi-Fi 7 are not automatic gaming upgrades. The gaming device must support the relevant feature, and a router must support it too. For example, using the 6 GHz band requires a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 client and a compatible router; a standard Wi-Fi 6 client cannot access 6 GHz. Availability of 6 GHz also depends on regional rules and equipment.

Intel publishes technology figures that should be read as vendor claims, not promises of home performance. Its Wi-Fi 6 guide gives a theoretical maximum aggregate throughput of 9.6 Gbps and says latency may be up to 75% lower, depending on network conditions and feature support: Intel’s Wi-Fi 6 guide. Its Wi-Fi 7 guide describes approximately 5.8 Gbps as a typical speed and 46 Gbps as a theoretical maximum; Intel says actual performance varies. It also reports approximately 60% lower latency than Wi-Fi 6 based on its engineering simulations of congested network environments and Multi-Link Operation—not as a guaranteed result in a home: Intel’s Wi-Fi 7 guide.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Wi-Fi generation and bands: Choose features your gaming device can use. Consider 6 GHz only if both ends support it and it is available in your region.
  • Coverage fit: Account for the device’s distance from the router, walls, and other sources of interference in the space.
  • Ethernet port speed: If you may wire the device, check that the router port supports the speed required by your internet plan.
  • QoS controls: Some routers can prioritize gaming-associated traffic when other people are using the network. Whether that helps depends on the router and traffic conditions; QoS does not fix every latency issue.
  • Client compatibility: Confirm that the gaming device or its network adapter supports the Wi-Fi features you are paying for.

A Wi-Fi 6 router with QoS may be a useful product category to compare, but it is not the best fit for everyone. Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 makes sense only when compatible devices can use the relevant features. For desktop users, check whether the existing Wi-Fi adapter is the limitation before buying a replacement.

Does a better router lower ping?

It can help if the router or local Wi-Fi connection is contributing to the problem—for example, through weak coverage, local congestion, or a lack of useful traffic-management controls. But ping also depends on the ISP connection and the route to the game server. A faster or newer router cannot guarantee a lower ping when those are the limiting factors.
