Use a device-specific purge sanitization method when the SSD must remain usable; use cryptographic erase (CE) only when you can prove its encryption and key-management prerequisites; choose physical destruction when the drive is failed, unsupported, or the data sensitivity and policy require the media never be reused. The label “secure erase” is not enough to make that decision. SSD wear levelling, spare flash cells, firmware behavior, encryption history, and command support all affect whether data recovery is actually infeasible.
The current reference point is NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2, published September 26, 2025. It directs organizations toward technology-specific guidance such as IEEE 2883, NSA specifications, or an approved internal standard rather than treating one command as universal.
The short answer: match the method to the outcome
There are two separate questions: must the SSD be reusable? and how much recovery resistance is required? A method that leaves the drive working is not automatically adequate, and a method that destroys the drive may be unnecessary if a properly implemented purge is available.

| SSD will be reused, returned, or resold | Use a model-specific clear or, preferably, purge method that follows current media-sanitization guidance. | Interface (SATA or NVMe), exact model and firmware, supported sanitize operation, coverage of all media areas, completion status, and a verification record. |
| The entire drive was encrypted and CE is being considered | CE can be efficient if its preconditions and assurance controls are demonstrably satisfied. | No sensitive plaintext was written after the last sanitization; all relevant encryption, wrapping, and derivation keys and copies can be eliminated; external escrow or backup paths are addressed; and the drive’s implementation reports errors reliably. |
| Drive is failed, unsupported, or must never leave recoverable media | Use a destruction process matched to the data category and the SSD’s construction. | The process makes laboratory recovery infeasible, renders the media unusable for storage, preserves chain-of-custody, and produces the required certificate or internal record. |
| You only see a button called “secure erase” | Stop and identify what the button actually invokes. | The underlying command, media regions covered, standard or vendor procedure followed, status/error behavior, and any implementation assurance. |
These choices are best compared on six axes: recovery resistance, reuse, dependence on encryption history, trust in firmware or vendor implementation, operation after interface or drive failure, and verification and documentation. Speed alone is not a meaningful security comparison.

What “clear,” “purge,” and “destroy” mean
Clear
Clear sanitization uses logical techniques through the normal interface or another approved software path to protect against ordinary recovery attempts. On flash storage, a host write does not necessarily reach every physical location that once held data. Wear levelling moves pages, and spare cells may be hidden from the operating system. Consequently, an overwrite that appears to fill the addressable capacity can leave previous data in locations the host cannot address.
Purge
Purge is intended to make recovery infeasible with state-of-the-art laboratory techniques while allowing the SSD to remain usable. For an SSD, that normally means a device-specific sanitize operation or a qualified cryptographic-erase operation, not a generic file deletion or a repeated pass of random data. NIST states: “When possible, the purge sanitization method should be used instead of the clear sanitization method.” (NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2.)
Destruction
Destruction makes the media unusable for later storage and is intended to make recovery infeasible with state-of-the-art laboratory techniques. It is the fallback when a failed or unsupported SSD cannot be sanitized reliably, or when policy requires destruction regardless of reuse value.
Why an ordinary overwrite is not a reliable SSD sanitization plan
Hard-drive advice such as “write zeros once” does not transfer directly to NAND flash. The controller deliberately distributes writes to extend cell life, so a logical block can be remapped to a new physical page while an older page remains in the flash array. Controllers also reserve spare blocks and may retain data in overprovisioned areas. The operating system’s read/write interface cannot enumerate all of those locations.

NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 therefore warns that ordinary host-interface overwriting is infeasible as a way to reach every prior location on flash media. Dedicated sanitize commands may address more of the storage, but their effectiveness depends on the drive’s firmware and the vendor’s implementation. A USB enclosure or adapter can further limit what commands reach the native SATA or NVMe controller.
If the SSD must remain usable: how to choose a secure-erase or purge operation
- Identify the media precisely. Record the manufacturer, model, capacity, serial number, interface, firmware revision, and whether the device is SATA, SAS, NVMe, or embedded storage. Do not assume two drives with the same capacity expose the same sanitization features.
- Read the current manufacturer procedure. Find the documentation for that exact model and firmware. Determine whether the vendor exposes a standardized sanitize operation, a block-erase function, a cryptographic-erase function, or another named method. Treat “secure erase” as a marketing or menu label until its underlying operation is documented.
- Check the connection path. Connect the SSD through an interface that passes the required native commands. Some adapters and enclosures expose only ordinary reads and writes, so a tool may report success without reaching controller-level sanitize functions.
- Select the method under your governing standard. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 recommends following IEEE 2883, NSA specifications, or an organization-approved standard instead of relying on an old universal command recipe. IEEE describes IEEE 2883-2022 as an active standard containing technology-specific sanitization requirements and guidance.
- Run the operation with the device isolated. Confirm that the intended drive is selected, disconnect other storage where practical, and ensure power will not be interrupted. A sanitize command generally destroys all data and may alter the device’s state.
- Capture the result. Retain the command or tool name and version, interface used, start and end times, device identifiers, result code, and any warnings. If the device reports an error or an incomplete area, treat the operation as unsuccessful until the failure is resolved or the drive is destroyed.
- Verify according to the procedure. Verification may include the device’s post-operation status, a documented read test, or a standard-defined check. A normal-looking empty volume is not, by itself, proof that all flash locations were sanitized.
Because Rev. 2 intentionally removes most detailed tool and technique recipes, do not publish or follow a SATA/NVMe command sequence as if it applied to every SSD. The exact model, firmware, interface path, and governing standard determine the acceptable procedure.
When cryptographic erase is appropriate
Cryptographic erase sanitizes the keys that protect encrypted data or prevents access to those keys. If the cryptographic design is sound and every relevant key is eliminated, the ciphertext left on the flash cells should be computationally unusable while the drive can be returned to service. CE can therefore be much faster than a media-wide physical operation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The plaintext precondition
CE is not a retroactive conversion of old plaintext. NIST cites an ISO/IEC 27040 precondition that sensitive data must not have been stored in plaintext on the media since the last appropriate sanitization. If encryption was enabled after the SSD had already held sensitive files, those earlier pages are outside what deleting the current key can protect. The same concern applies to unencrypted recovery partitions, diagnostic areas, or other regions outside the claimed encryption boundary.

Account for the whole key hierarchy
Deleting one visible volume key may not be enough. A design can involve data-encryption keys, wrapping keys, derivation keys, key-encryption hierarchies, cached copies, and recovery keys. NIST advises examining keys stored or managed outside the drive, including escrow services, external key-management servers, backups, or injection systems. Any surviving key that can decrypt the retained ciphertext can defeat the intended erase.
Check cryptographic assurance
Establish which algorithm and cryptographic module protect the data, how keys were generated, whether the implementation has the assurance your policy requires, and how the device reports a failed key-sanitization attempt. For federal agencies, NIST requires cryptographic modules validated to the current FIPS 140 standard when relying on an SED’s CE assurance. That is a federal requirement, not a blanket rule for every consumer or private organization.
Document CE as a complete operation
For each CE event, record the device make, model, firmware and serial number; encrypted areas; encryption algorithms and module details; key hierarchy and lifecycle; copies, escrow, backup, or injection paths; the command interface; operator; date and time; result; and error handling. If you cannot establish these facts, choose a device-specific non-CE purge or destruction instead.
When physical destruction is the right answer
Choose destruction when the SSD has failed, is unsupported, cannot expose a trustworthy sanitize operation, or must not be released as reusable media. It is also appropriate when the data category or organizational policy requires destruction even though a logical purge might otherwise work.

Why drilling or bending is not a certification
NIST cautions that bending, cutting, and drilling can damage a casing while leaving flash packages or individual memory components readable. A hole through a circuit board does not prove that every package containing data has been rendered unrecoverable. The same caution applies to improvised hammering.
Use a process matched to the SSD and data category
NIST lists disintegration, incineration, melting, pulverizing, and shredding as destruction techniques, while warning that some shred or pulverize approaches should be avoided except for the lowest security categories. Particle size, treatment of detached NAND packages, and the possibility of laboratory reconstruction all matter. For regulated or enterprise data, use an organization-approved process or a qualified destruction service whose method is specified for the media and security category. Preserve chain-of-custody records and the completion documentation required by policy.

What changed with NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2
NIST published Rev. 2 on September 26, 2025, and its official record says it supersedes Rev. 1 (NIST publication record; NIST revision record). The revision takes a programmatic approach and replaces most detailed sanitization technique and tool instructions—while retaining CE guidance—with recommendations to follow IEEE 2883, NSA specifications, or an approved organizational standard.
IEEE’s catalog identifies IEEE 2883-2022 as an active standard for logical and physical storage sanitization. The catalog also lists IEEE 2883.1-2025 as a recommended practice for applying 2883 methods before reuse, resale, or disposal. The catalog page does not expose all technical requirements, so it cannot by itself establish that a particular SSD command is compliant.
Common cases and the safer decision
Home computer being sold
Identify the SSD model, consult its current sanitization instructions, and use a supported purge operation through a native interface when feasible. If the drive was encrypted from the beginning and the key lifecycle is demonstrable, CE may satisfy the required assurance. Otherwise, do not infer that a factory reset or file deletion covers the flash cells.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Company laptop with managed full-disk encryption
Ask the security or device-management team whether sensitive data ever existed before encryption, whether recovery keys or escrow copies remain, and whether the organization’s approved procedure recognizes CE. Record the device identity and result. If those answers are unavailable, use the approved purge or destruction path rather than guessing.
SSD that is no longer detected
A failed controller can prevent any trustworthy logical command. Do not rely on a software tool that cannot communicate with the drive. Place the device under chain-of-custody and use destruction appropriate to the data category, preferably through a qualified process that addresses the NAND packages themselves.
Unsupported consumer model or unknown firmware
Unknown implementation details create an assurance gap. Search the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact revision; if no reliable sanitize method and verification path exist, treat the SSD as unsuitable for reuse and select destruction consistent with policy.
Quick Recap
Mistakes to avoid
- Assuming one overwrite pass is universally sufficient. Wear levelling and spare cells prevent that conclusion for flash media.
- Equating “secure erase” with a standard. The phrase can describe different commands, utilities, or vendor workflows.
- Assuming encryption automatically makes CE valid. Plaintext history, unencrypted regions, weak or unassured implementations, and surviving key copies can invalidate it.
- Deleting only a user-visible key. Wrapping, derivation, recovery, escrow, and backup keys may still exist.
- Using an adapter without checking command pass-through. The enclosure may hide native sanitize capabilities.
- Drilling one hole and calling the SSD destroyed. Flash packages can remain readable and recoverable.
- Skipping verification and records. Without device identity, result status, and method details, you cannot demonstrate what happened.
- Following an old Rev. 1 command table as current universal guidance. Rev. 2 changed the standards direction; use current technology-specific requirements.
