There is no proven best SSD cloning program for every computer. The right choice depends on your operating system, drive layout, target SSD and whether you need a direct replacement drive or a restorable backup. For Windows, Macrium Reflect and Acronis True Image document cloning workflows; Samsung Data Migration is a narrower, manufacturer-specific option. Treat third-party rankings as editorial recommendations, not universal test results.
Choose cloning software by the job you need done
Cloning copies selected partitions directly to another drive. A disk image instead stores data in a compressed file that you can restore later. Choose a clone when you want to replace a drive with a copy; choose an image when you need a recovery point you can keep independently of the computer. Macrium explains this distinction in its cloning guidance.
- Replacing a system drive: Confirm the tool can copy the operating system, boot and recovery partitions—not just the visible Windows volume.
- Keeping a recoverable copy: Make an image and store it somewhere other than the drive being replaced.
- Moving to a different computer: Check whether the software supports the hardware change and driver preparation. A clone containing Windows may not boot on different hardware.
Which SSD cloning programs are worth considering?
Macrium Reflect for documented Windows cloning features
Macrium’s product page describes HDD-to-SSD cloning, partition resizing, intelligent-sector copying, delta cloning, and live and offline cloning. It also advertises ReDeploy, which it says updates Windows before the first boot on the target. That boot claim is Macrium’s product-page statement, not an independently established guarantee. Its knowledge base warns that cloning may delete partitions on the destination and explains why imaging is more suitable for disaster recovery.

Acronis True Image for Windows when disk layout control matters
The Windows 2026 Clone Disk wizard supports proportional or manual destination layouts and describes cloning for replacement in the same machine, use on another machine, or data-only use. Acronis says it does not support dynamic disks and requires source and destination disks to have the same logical sector size. Common sizes are 512 or 4096 bytes, depending on the drive and controller. The wizard leaves the original disk unchanged, but destination partitions can be deleted after you confirm the operation. A clone may not boot on different hardware without driver preparation and Universal Restore.

Samsung Data Migration for eligible Samsung drive setups
Samsung’s official revision 6 manual describes its Data Migration utility, but the manual’s version date is not established here. Check Samsung’s official SSD software and tools page for current software and eligibility before relying on it. The manual lists possible trouble with encrypted drives, some multi-OS installations, damaged source drives, dynamic disks, some USB adapters, and Samsung NVMe targets without the Samsung NVMe driver. Those limits make it important to verify your specific source and target rather than assume the tool will work for every Samsung SSD.
Acronis True Image for Mac for a distinct macOS workflow
Acronis’s 2026 Mac guide describes cloning data to create a bootable copy on a new drive. Its Apple silicon procedure (M1 through M4, as listed in the guide) is different: clone to an external disk, then use macOS Recovery, reinstall macOS, and Migration Assistant to move data to the destination Mac. The guide warns that cloning formats and erases the destination. This procedure should not be generalized to every Mac or migration scenario.

Other contenders: compare claims, not rankings alone
TechRadar’s January 12, 2026 comparison names EaseUS Todo Backup as its top overall pick and also discusses Acronis, Macrium, AOMEI, and Paragon. That is the publication’s editorial ranking, not a universal result. Use its comparison to identify candidates, then confirm current platform support, licensing, and cloning features in each vendor’s documentation. A complete apples-to-apples comparison across current Windows, Linux, and macOS versions is not established by the available vendor guidance.

Check compatibility before choosing a tool
A drive can fit physically and still be incompatible with a particular cloning workflow. Check these points before you start:

- One-Touch Offline Cloning: Start the cloning process with a single touch—no software installation or complicated PC setup required. Designed for quick, hassle-free data migration to save you time and effort.
- Flexible Cloning:Supports cloning between various drive types, including M.2 PCIe NVMe SSDs, 2.5" and 3.5" SATA SSDs and HDDs. Easily clone from NVMe to NVMe or from SATA to NVMe, offering maximum versatility for different storage setups.
- Versatile Triple-Bay Design: Equipped with three independent slots, allowing you to connect and access multiple drives simultaneously. The tool-free design makes swapping and docking drives fast and convenient, ideal for professionals managing diverse data sources.
- High-Speed USB 3.2 Gen 2 Performance: Features USB 3.2 Gen 2 technology for blazing-fast data transfer speeds up to 10 Gbps. Includes a dual-purpose USB-C/USB-A combo cable, eliminating the need for extra adapters and ensuring easy connectivity across devices.
- Multi-OS Compatibility: Designed to work flawlessly with Windows and macOS systems, delivering consistent and stable performance. Compatible with a wide range of devices including PCs, laptops, and game consoles—perfect for users who switch between operating systems or use mixed environments.
- Operating system: Verify current support for your version of Windows or macOS. Do not assume a Windows cloning program can migrate a Mac.
- Drive type and connection: Match the SSD’s interface and form factor to the computer and any enclosure. Verify the host port and enclosure chipset as well as the software’s support.
- Logical sector size and disk type: Acronis requires matching sector sizes and does not support dynamic disks. Other tools may have their own restrictions.
- Encryption and disk condition: Samsung’s manual flags encryption and damaged source drives among possible problems.
- Partitions and capacity: Include the partitions needed to boot and recover the system. Check used space and whether the software can resize partitions for the target. A larger destination may leave unused space unless you adjust the layout; a smaller one must accommodate the data and partitions being copied.
- License and recovery options: Confirm current licensing and included features with the vendor, and check how it handles failed cloning and rescue media. Current prices and trial terms are not established consistently across these options.
Prepare the SSD and protect your data
- Back up important files. A clone is not a historical backup, and the destination may be erased. Keep an independent copy of anything you cannot afford to lose.
- Identify both drives carefully. Check model, capacity, and connection in the cloning software before proceeding. Acronis displays a final confirmation before destructive work; its Mac guide says the destination is formatted and irreversibly erased when cloning starts.
- Connect the target using a supported path. If your computer has no second internal slot, an external USB-C NVMe SSD enclosure can connect a compatible NVMe drive for cloning. Plugable’s support guidance says its named enclosure can work with third-party cloning software, but compatibility varies by program and setup. Match the enclosure to the drive and computer port; this is not a universal guarantee.
- Review the partition map. Confirm which partitions will be copied and how they will fit on the new drive. Use the software’s resizing controls where available, and do not assume a smaller SSD can accept the clone just because the source drive’s total used space appears to fit.
- Run the clone and follow the program’s completion instructions. Keep the original drive unchanged until you have verified the new one. If cloning to different hardware, use the vendor’s documented boot or driver-preparation procedure rather than assuming the copied system will start.
What to do if the clone does not boot
A successful data copy does not by itself establish that the new drive will boot. First check that the clone includes the system and boot partitions, then consult the chosen program’s current recovery guidance for the computer and disk layout. When the destination is being used in different hardware, account for driver preparation: Acronis specifically warns that a Windows clone may need appropriate drivers and Universal Restore. On Apple silicon, follow the separate Recovery and Migration Assistant procedure in Acronis’s 2026 Mac guide rather than applying Windows-style boot steps.
For a Macrium clone, the vendor describes ReDeploy as updating Windows before first boot, but its “first time, every time” wording is a product claim rather than a tested guarantee. If your primary need is recoverability after a failed drive or system change, use an image-based backup as well as—or instead of—a direct clone.
