Use an SSD for your operating system, applications, and files that benefit from quick access; use an HDD for larger files and data you access less often. In a typical two-drive computer, you manage this split yourself. Automatic caching or tiering is a separate feature that depends on the platform and storage configuration.
Can you use an SSD and HDD together?
Yes. If your computer supports both drives, they can operate at the same time as separate storage devices. The SSD can hold the operating system and performance-sensitive data, while the HDD adds capacity for bulk storage. This arrangement does not, by itself, combine the drives into one larger drive or make the HDD faster.
Microsoft describes SSD-plus-HDD hybrid storage as a way to balance performance and capacity. In its Azure Local and Windows Server cluster guidance, SSDs can provide a cache for HDD capacity, and Microsoft recommends placing the most performance-sensitive workloads on the SSD tier. That guidance is specific to those server configurations; it does not mean an ordinary desktop automatically caches HDD activity just because both drives are installed. Microsoft Learn: Choose drives for Azure Local and Windows Server clusters
How should you divide files between the drives?
| Storage role | Good fit | How it behaves |
|---|---|---|
| SSD: performance-sensitive storage | Operating system, applications, and files or projects you use frequently | Files placed here use SSD storage directly; an HDD elsewhere in the computer is not automatically accelerated. |
| HDD: capacity storage | Large collections, archives, media, backups, and less frequently accessed files | Provides additional storage capacity, but files remain on HDD storage unless you move them or configure supported storage software. |
For a straightforward setup, keep the operating system and applications on the SSD, then save larger or less frequently used files to the HDD. You can choose the HDD as the destination when saving or move existing files there. This is manual placement: it is simple and works independently of a specialized cache, but you must decide where files belong.

What is the difference between separate drives, a pool, and a cache?
Separate drives with manual file placement
Each drive appears as its own storage location. You choose the destination for files and applications. This is generally the simplest way to use two drives in a personal computer; it does not require pooling or automatic tiering.
A storage pool
A pool groups multiple drives under storage-management software. Windows Storage Spaces can combine multiple drives into a pool, but that does not automatically mean the drives form an SSD cache for one another. Some USB hubs and enclosures are not eligible because they can hide individual drive identities or make drives appear removable. Check the connection and device behavior before relying on an external enclosure. Microsoft Support: Storage Spaces in Windows

Automatic caching or tiering
Caching and tiering use storage software to manage data placement or access between drive types. Microsoft documents SSD read-and-write caching for HDD capacity in its Storage Spaces Direct implementation for Azure Local and Windows Server clusters. This behavior is not a general feature of every desktop operating system or computer with two drives. Microsoft Learn: Understanding the storage pool cache in Azure Local and Windows Server clusters
When does automatic caching make sense?
Automatic caching is most relevant when a supported storage platform is managing a workload that needs both performance and capacity. The benefit depends on how the workload accesses data and how much of its active working set can be served effectively by the cache. Microsoft’s cache-sizing guidance is for Azure Local and Windows Server deployments, so its sizing advice should not be treated as a universal rule for a home PC. Microsoft’s cache guidance

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
If you are setting up an ordinary computer with one SSD and one HDD, begin with separate drives and intentional file placement unless you have a specific, supported reason to configure pooling or caching. Avoid assuming that a storage pool will provide automatic speed improvements.

Drive fit and compatibility depend on the target computer, not simply on whether it can use an SSD or HDD in principle. Before choosing a drive, identify the exact computer model and verify:

- Whether there is an available drive bay or slot for an additional drive.
- The supported drive form factor and physical dimensions.
- The supported connector and interface for the drive and system.
- Whether the operating system and storage setup support your intended use, especially if you want pooling or automatic caching.
These checks matter for both internal SSDs and large-capacity HDDs. Without the computer model, workload, capacity target, and budget, there is no universal drive model or size that can be recommended reliably.

A sensible setup for a typical two-drive computer
- Confirm the computer supports both the SSD and HDD you intend to install, including their form factors, bays or slots, and interfaces.
- Use the SSD for the operating system and applications, or for other performance-sensitive data that fits your needs.
- Use the HDD as a separate destination for larger or less frequently accessed files.
- Choose a pool or cache only if your operating system and storage platform support the exact configuration you want; do not assume that installing both drives enables one.
