If you find yourself turning the volume down for commercials or up again when a program resumes, SRS TruVolume may help. It is audio processing designed to narrow perceived loudness differences—not a guarantee that every sound will come out at the same level. Whether to leave it on depends on your equipment and whether you prefer steadier volume or the source’s original dynamic swings.
What is SRS TruVolume?
SRS TruVolume is automatic audio post-processing that adjusts the amplitude of a stereo signal to keep perceived loudness more consistent as the input level changes. It is different from the volume control on your TV or soundbar: the volume control sets your overall listening level, while TruVolume processes changes in loudness within the audio.
Analog Devices describes its SHARC implementation as monitoring 20 frequency bands and responding differently to level changes. That implementation supports 32, 44.1, and 48 kHz sample rates and offers three aggressiveness settings. How do I turn TruVolume on or off?
The menu depends on the TV, soundbar, or other device. For one documented example, the VIZIO M650VSE provides this path:

- Press Menu on the TV remote.
- Open Audio.
- Select SRS TruVolume.
- Choose On or Off.

Does TruVolume make commercials quieter?
It is intended to reduce perceived loudness differences when the audio level changes, which can help make transitions between program material and louder segments less abrupt. It does not promise to make every commercial quieter, eliminate all volume changes, or make speech clearer. The result depends on the implementation, the incoming audio, and the rest of your setup.

Should I leave TruVolume on?
Try it with the kinds of content that prompted you to look for it, then decide based on what sounds better to you. Leave it on if you prefer fewer perceived loudness swings. Turn it off if you would rather hear the source’s original changes in intensity.
Leveling can reduce dynamic contrast: the difference between quieter and louder passages. A VIZIO VSB210WS soundbar manual says TruVolume has a nominal effect on dynamic range and notes that listeners can disengage it when they prefer the original fluctuations. That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent listening measurement, and the effect may differ by device and listener. VIZIO VSB210WS user manual

Can I add TruVolume to a TV that does not have it?
An external processor is a possible route, but compatibility is a key limitation. The CYP DCT-8S manual documents an HDMI-in/HDMI-out leveler with a TruVolume switch. Its stated signal support is two-channel PCM at 32, 44.1, and 48 kHz. Do not assume it will handle multichannel bitstreams or every HDMI source; verify the audio format and connections used by your specific equipment. If you are considering external gear, check the manuals for the source, processor, and TV or receiver. Confirm whether the source outputs PCM or an encoded format, whether the signal is stereo or multichannel, and whether its sample rate is supported. If those details do not match, the processor may not work in your signal chain as expected.

Is TruVolume HD the same as SRS TruVolume?
Do not assume that the names mean identical format support or controls. DTS describes TruVolume HD as real-time loudness leveling for stereo and 5.1 audio, with a configurable target loudness.
