Short answer: Choose Squarespace if you want hosting, templates, SEO controls, commerce and routine maintenance in one managed service. Choose WordPress if you need deep customization, a larger plugin ecosystem and the freedom to choose your host—and you are prepared to manage updates, backups and security or pay someone to do it.
Neither platform is automatically cheaper. Squarespace bundles more operational work into its subscription, while WordPress can start with free software but add hosting, premium themes, plugins and developer time. Squarespace’s plan prices are changing and conflicting figures are circulating, so confirm the current amount at squarespace.com/pricing before signing up.
Squarespace or WordPress: the decision at a glance
| If your priority is… | Usually the better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A polished site launched with minimal technical work | Squarespace | Hosting, templates, core SEO tools and maintenance are managed in one service. |
| Plugin-level control, unusual features or a site that may evolve for years | WordPress | You can select from a broad ecosystem of themes and plugins and control the hosting stack. |
| A small brochure site managed by a non-technical owner | Squarespace | There is less software to update and fewer separate vendors to coordinate. |
| A content-heavy publication, membership project or custom workflow | WordPress | The platform can be extended rather than forcing the site into a fixed set of built-in features. |
| A store that wants no platform transaction fee on WooCommerce payments | WordPress.com Business or a suitable WordPress host | WordPress.com Business lists 0% transaction fees for WooCommerce payments, although premium store extensions cost extra. |
| A store that wants the simplest all-in-one setup | Squarespace | Commerce is built into the same dashboard, with predictable plan-level selling and processing fees. |
The right choice is less about which logo is “better” and more about whether you value managed convenience or maximum control.

What you are actually choosing
Squarespace is a managed website service
Squarespace combines hosting, a template system, editing tools, built-in SEO controls and commerce in one hosted product. You do not install a server, patch a content-management system or assemble a separate backup and security stack. Squarespace handles the underlying maintenance while you work inside its editor.

That integration is the main reason beginners and small teams find it easier: one account covers the website and its infrastructure. The trade-off is that you work within Squarespace’s supported features and integrations. If a capability is not built in or available through an integration, adding it may require a workaround or custom development.
WordPress is software, not one single hosting arrangement
WordPress itself is free software. “WordPress” can mean a hosted WordPress.com plan or a self-hosted installation that you run with a separate hosting company. Those choices have different costs and responsibilities.
- WordPress.com: The provider hosts the site and sells plans with different storage, commerce and customization options. Plugin installation is available on every paid plan, including Personal, Premium, Business and Commerce.
- Self-hosted WordPress: You obtain hosting and a domain separately, install WordPress and choose your own themes and plugins. You are responsible for updates, backups, security, compatibility fixes and the quality of the hosting environment unless you pay for managed help.
Calling WordPress “free” therefore describes the software license, not the finished website. A live site still needs a domain and hosting, and many projects also need paid themes, plugins or professional assistance.
Costs in 2026: compare the whole operating bill
Prices are volatile. Squarespace’s official support material directs customers to its pricing page, while third-party 2026 figures conflict with older guides. Do not treat a historical “starting at” price as a current quote. Check the billing interval, country, taxes, introductory period and renewal amount before purchase.
Squarespace selling and payment fees
Squarespace supports selling on Basic, Core, Plus and Advanced plans. The following fees are the documented percentages for the plan names in the current support material; they are separate from any subscription price.
| Squarespace plan | Online-store transaction fee | US domestic card processing | Digital-product fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | 2% | 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction | 7% |
| Core | 0% | 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction | 5% |
| Plus | 0% | 2.7% + $0.30 per transaction | 1% |
| Advanced | 0% | 2.5% + $0.30 per transaction | 0% |
The card rates above are specifically for domestic US cards. International cards, currency conversion and other payment-method charges can differ. The digital-product percentages apply to the sale of digital products and are not the same as the physical-goods transaction fee.
For scale, a 2% Basic-plan store fee equals $40 on $2,000 of online-store sales or $200 on $10,000, before card processing. That recurring fee can outweigh the subscription-price difference for a growing physical-goods store. A digital seller processing $1,000 would pay $70 on Basic, $50 on Core, $10 on Plus or $0 on Advanced under the listed percentages, again before card processing.

What is known about Squarespace subscription prices
A July 2026 agency report attributed annual-billing monthly-equivalent prices of $19 for Basic, $29 for Core, $49 for Plus and $99 for Advanced to a price-change email. It also listed month-to-month amounts of $25, $39, $65 and $139. Those figures come from one third-party source and conflict with older guides, so use them only as a budgeting scenario—not as a guaranteed current price. Verify the live amount at squarespace.com/pricing.

WordPress.com plan figures
The WordPress.com pricing page lists the following US monthly-billing amounts in the available page text:
| WordPress.com plan | Monthly billing price shown | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Personal | US$9 per month | The page layout should be checked at checkout because portions of the text are difficult to interpret. |
| Premium | US$18 per month | Monthly-billing figure shown in the pricing page text. |
| Business | US$40 per month | Monthly-billing figure shown in the pricing page text. |
WordPress.com’s own October 2, 2026 blog post states that Personal on annual billing costs $4 per month in year one and $5 per month in year two. Those are annual-commitment figures with a year-one introductory rate, not a permanent month-to-month price.

Self-hosted WordPress: the line items people forget
With self-hosting, the WordPress software has no license charge, but your total cost can include:
- A hosting plan, with the price and quality varying by provider and resources.
- A domain registration and any privacy or renewal charges.
- Premium themes or a page-builder license.
- Paid plugins for commerce, forms, memberships, backups, security or specialized content.
- Professional setup, maintenance, troubleshooting or development time.
- Payment-processing fees and, for stores, any marketplace or extension charges.
Budget hosting may look inexpensive, but the owner remains responsible for uptime decisions, updates, security, backups and fixes. A managed WordPress host can reduce that workload while increasing the recurring bill.
Setup and maintenance: what you will do after launch
Launching a Squarespace site
- Choose a starting template: Select a layout close to your content structure rather than choosing only by its demo photographs.
- Set the site identity: Add the domain, site title, logo, brand colors, navigation and basic page hierarchy.
- Build the core pages: Create the home, about, services or product, contact, privacy and terms pages that your audience needs.
- Configure SEO fields: Review page titles, descriptions, URL slugs, social sharing images and the site-wide settings available in the dashboard.
- Connect commerce if required: Add products, shipping or delivery rules, tax settings, payment methods and the relevant plan.
- Test before publishing: Submit contact forms, place a test order, check mobile layouts, inspect links and verify confirmation emails.
- Maintain content rather than infrastructure: Keep pages, products and integrations current; Squarespace handles the underlying platform maintenance.
Launching on WordPress.com
- Select a plan: Decide whether the Personal, Premium, Business or Commerce feature set matches the site. Plugin installation is available on all paid plans.
- Choose a theme and site structure: Set the homepage, navigation, typography and reusable design elements.
- Connect a domain: Register or attach the domain and confirm the site’s primary address.
- Install only necessary plugins: Add functionality in small batches so you can identify conflicts and performance problems.
- Configure essential settings: Set user roles, permalinks, media sizes, privacy notices, forms and SEO controls.
- Test workflows: Check publishing, forms, search, checkout and account emails on desktop and mobile.
- Schedule maintenance: Review plugin updates, backups, security alerts and renewal dates even though the hosting layer is managed.
Launching self-hosted WordPress
- Buy hosting and a domain: Confirm that the plan supports the expected traffic, PHP/database requirements and backup options.
- Install HTTPS and WordPress: Use the host’s installer or perform a manual installation, then force secure URLs.
- Create an administrator account: Use a unique password and avoid sharing the main administrator login.
- Choose a maintained theme: Check its update history, compatibility and accessibility before importing demo content.
- Add a minimal plugin set: Install backups, security, forms, SEO or commerce tools only when their functions are needed.
- Set automated backups: Keep copies outside the web server and periodically test restoration rather than assuming a backup is usable.
- Define an update routine: Update WordPress, themes and plugins in a staging environment when possible, then check forms, layouts and checkout.
Design control and visual consistency
Squarespace: curated control
Squarespace’s templates are curated and design-led. The editor makes it straightforward to achieve consistent spacing, typography and responsive layouts without assembling a design system from many vendors. This reduces decisions and speeds up a first launch.

WordPress: a wider range, wider quality spread
WordPress separates the content platform from the theme and page-builder choices. You can create a highly distinctive design, reuse components across a large site or replace the theme without changing the underlying content model. The cost is evaluation: themes and builders differ in accessibility, update quality, performance and editing behavior.
Some comparison articles estimate roughly 200 Squarespace templates and more than 60,000 WordPress plugins, but those figures are not confirmed as official counts and should be treated as directional only. The practical difference is that Squarespace presents a smaller curated set, while WordPress asks you to choose from a much larger and less uniform ecosystem.
Extensibility and integrations
When built-in features are enough
For a portfolio, service business, event site or simple store, Squarespace’s included tools may cover the requirements without additional extensions. Fewer moving parts mean fewer compatibility decisions and a smaller maintenance surface.

WordPress is the stronger option when the site depends on a specialized content type, membership rules, complex forms, external data, multilingual workflows or a custom editorial process. Plugins can add those capabilities without changing platforms, although each plugin introduces update, security and support considerations.
On WordPress.com, plugin installation is available on Personal, Premium, Business and Commerce paid plans. That removes an older assumption that plugins are reserved only for the highest plan, but individual plugins may still have their own licenses or hosting requirements.
How to evaluate an extension before installing it
- Check when it was last updated and whether it supports your WordPress version.
- Confirm that the developer provides documentation and a recovery path.
- Read the data-access and privacy implications, especially for forms and analytics.
- Test it with the chosen theme, editor and payment flow on a staging copy.
- Record renewal costs and remove it if the feature is no longer used.
Commerce: built-in store versus WooCommerce
Squarespace commerce
Squarespace keeps products, pages, design and checkout in one administrative environment. That is attractive for a small catalog or a business that wants the store to look like the rest of the site without assembling a separate commerce stack.
Basic charges 2% on online-store sales; Core, Plus and Advanced charge 0%. The listed US domestic card rates decrease from 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic and Core to 2.7% + $0.30 on Plus and 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced. Digital products have a separate 7%, 5%, 1% and 0% schedule from Basic through Advanced. Compare the combined subscription and per-order costs using your actual order value and sales volume.
WordPress with WooCommerce
WooCommerce gives WordPress stores a configurable product and checkout system that can be extended with additional modules. WordPress.com Business lists 0% transaction fees for WooCommerce payments, but premium store extensions are not included. On self-hosted WordPress, hosting, extensions, maintenance and payment processing are separate decisions.

WooCommerce is therefore more adaptable but demands more configuration. Inventory, shipping, taxes, email delivery, backups and update testing need an owner. Squarespace is usually faster for a straightforward catalog; WordPress is more suitable when product logic or integrations are central to the business.
SEO and publishing workflows
Squarespace includes SEO tools as part of its managed service, so a site owner can work on page titles, descriptions, URLs and social presentation without installing a separate SEO system. Its strength is consistency and a short setup path.
WordPress can support a more tailored editorial workflow and can add SEO plugins or custom fields when the site needs them. That flexibility is valuable for large content libraries, but it creates more settings to standardize. Establish naming conventions, URL rules, redirects and editorial permissions before many contributors start publishing.
On either platform, technical tools do not replace fundamentals: useful page content, descriptive headings, accessible navigation, fast media delivery, clear internal linking and accurate business information.
Portability and lock-in
Portability is an important question, but broad claims require care. Comparison articles often say that Squarespace cannot export an entire site while WordPress sites can be moved between hosts. Those statements have not been verified here against current official export documentation, and export scope can differ for pages, products, design settings, media and customer data.
Before committing, perform a practical portability check:
- Identify which content must survive a move: posts, pages, images, products, orders, customers, redirects and design settings.
- Read the current export documentation for the exact plan and content type.
- Ask whether the export is a standard format or a platform-specific archive.
- Confirm how domains, email addresses, subscriptions and payment records would be handled separately.
- For a high-value site, run a small test export and import before the full launch.
WordPress’s separation of content, hosting and themes generally gives owners more control over where the software runs, but a migration can still require theme rebuilding, plugin replacement and database cleanup.

Squarespace responsibility split
Squarespace manages the hosted platform, reducing the number of infrastructure tasks on your checklist. You still need strong account security, least-privilege user access, accurate domain settings, safe integrations and reliable copies of business data that the platform does not automatically make available in the form you need.

WordPress responsibility split
On WordPress.com, the host manages the service layer, but site owners still need to keep plugins, themes, accounts and content configuration under control. On self-hosted WordPress, every component becomes your responsibility unless a managed provider explicitly covers it.
- Use multifactor authentication wherever available.
- Give contributors the lowest role that lets them do their work.
- Maintain automated backups and test restoring one.
- Update in a controlled order and check forms, media, navigation and checkout afterward.
- Remove abandoned plugins, themes and user accounts.
Which platform fits common site types?
| Site situation | Recommended starting point | Reason and caution |
|---|---|---|
| Solo consultant or local service business | Squarespace | Fast launch and low maintenance; confirm that required scheduling, forms or billing integrations are supported. |
| Small shop with a limited catalog | Squarespace | Integrated design and checkout simplify operations; model the 2% Basic fee and digital-product charges if relevant. |
| Digital-product business | Either, based on volume and workflow | Squarespace’s digital-product fee falls from 7% on Basic to 0% on Advanced; WordPress may need paid commerce extensions and maintenance. |
| Magazine, documentation site or large blog | WordPress | Flexible content structures and editorial tooling are valuable; budget for hosting, updates and governance. |
| Membership or custom application-like workflow | WordPress | Plugins and custom development provide more options; vet every extension and plan maintenance. |
| Owner who does not want to touch updates | Squarespace or managed WordPress | Choose the service that clearly assigns maintenance responsibility and fits the required features. |
| Agency building many different client sites | WordPress for varied requirements; Squarespace for standardized brochure sites | Standardization favors Squarespace, while unusual integrations favor WordPress. |
A practical selection process
- Write the non-negotiable features. Include commerce type, number of products, memberships, forms, integrations, languages, contributor roles and legal requirements.
- Separate must-have features from preferences. A preferred visual effect should not outweigh a missing payment or data workflow.
- Estimate three-year ownership cost. Add subscriptions or hosting, domains, transaction fees, digital-product fees, premium extensions, maintenance and likely developer hours.
- Assign maintenance ownership. Name the person or provider responsible for updates, backups, security alerts and recovery.
- Prototype the riskiest workflow. Build a representative product, form, article template or membership step before migrating all content.
- Check exit requirements. Verify exports, domain control and access to essential data before launch.
- Choose the least complex platform that meets the requirements. Extra flexibility has a cost even when the software license is free.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing from the headline price
A low introductory rate can hide annual billing, renewal pricing, transaction fees or extension costs. Compare the recurring subscription and usage-based charges together.
Assuming “free WordPress” means maintenance-free
The software may be free, but hosting, backups, security and troubleshooting are not. Decide who will perform those tasks before selecting self-hosting.
Installing too many WordPress plugins
Every plugin adds another update and compatibility surface. Start with the smallest set that solves the requirements, document configuration and remove unused tools.
Ignoring digital-product fees
A plan that is economical for physical products may be expensive for downloads, courses or other digital goods. Use the separate digital-product percentages when modeling Squarespace.
Skipping a migration test
Do not assume that a visual design, product catalog or customer records will move intact. Test the exact export and import path with a small sample.
Failing to test after changes
After an update, template change or integration replacement, submit forms, review mobile pages and run a checkout test. A site that loads is not necessarily a site that converts or records data correctly.
Final verdict for 2026
Squarespace is the better choice for a managed, design-conscious site where predictable administration matters more than unlimited customization. Its all-in-one model covers hosting, templates, SEO tools and commerce, and its plan-level selling fees are clear enough to model once you know your sales mix.
WordPress is the better choice when your site’s future depends on plugins, custom content structures, specialized integrations or the freedom to change hosts. The software is free, but the real budget must include hosting, premium components and the people responsible for updates, backups and security.
If both platforms meet the feature list, choose Squarespace for the lower operational burden. If a required workflow exists only through WordPress extensions or custom code, accept the added maintenance in exchange for that flexibility. Recheck current prices and fee schedules immediately before purchase because 2026 plan details can change.
