Choose Squarespace if your business needs a polished website for a brand, services, content, or memberships as well as a shop; choose Shopify if selling is the center of the operation and you need commerce-focused tools for channels, staff, or international growth. Neither is the universal winner. The right choice depends on what you sell, how you sell it, who needs access, your country, and the full cost after payment processing and platform fees.
The title’s “I tested them side by side” claim is not supported by the available evidence, so this comparison makes no claim of hands-on testing or measured usability. It compares the vendors’ published plans and features. Confirm current details on the linked pages before subscribing: availability, rates, and features can vary by location and plan.
How to choose between Squarespace and Shopify
Start with the job your website must do, not the advertised monthly price. A business whose site is primarily a portfolio, service hub, publication, or membership destination may value Squarespace’s combination of website and selling features. A store whose daily work revolves around commerce may find Shopify’s plan structure more relevant, particularly if it needs staff accounts, reporting, in-person selling, or international tools.

Shopify describes its tiers in terms of business stage and sales needs. These are vendor descriptions, not independent measures of which platform is easier or performs better. Squarespace’s selling overview and Shopify’s plan guidance explain their respective approaches.
#1 Best Overall
Pick Squarespace when the site is more than a storefront
Consider Squarespace if you want one site to present a brand or portfolio and sell services, content, memberships, or physical products. Its current website plans are Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced; selling availability and included features depend on plan. Check the current plan guidance for what is offered in your region and account.
Pick Shopify when commerce operations drive the decision
Shopify is worth considering when the business is primarily a store and its needs align with Shopify’s commerce-oriented tiers, such as additional staff access, reporting, in-person selling, or international selling tools. Shopify positions Basic for new businesses, Grow for businesses with consistent sales needing added capabilities, and Advanced for high-volume or migrating businesses. Those descriptions are guidance, not a guarantee that upgrading will reduce a particular merchant’s costs.
Compare the work each platform needs to support
Website purpose and content
Write down what a customer should be able to do on the site besides buy a product. If the answer includes booking a service, exploring a portfolio, joining a membership, or consuming paid content, confirm that the plan you are considering supports that exact selling model. Squarespace explicitly lists these categories in its selling materials; do not assume that every feature is included on every plan.

Catalog, fulfillment, and sales channels
Map the actual sales workflow: online checkout, inventory handling, fulfillment, shipping and tax needs, and any sales through social channels, marketplaces, pop-ups, or a physical shop. The official material here does not establish a universal winner for catalog complexity or fulfillment workflow. Compare the specific tools and integrations your business requires on the plans available in your country.
Staff and reporting
Count the people who need accounts and identify the reports or permissions they need. Shopify explicitly presents additional staff access and reporting as reasons some growing businesses may consider a higher tier. Verify the allowance and reporting features on the live pricing page rather than assuming they are identical across plans.
In-person and international selling
If you sell face to face, check the point-of-sale features and any add-on costs for the plan and country you will use. Shopify lists in-person selling and POS Pro among its plan considerations. For cross-border sales, confirm supported payment methods, currencies, market configuration, duties and tax tools, and regional availability. A feature advertised on a global page may not be available in every market.

Plans and listed prices: what the published figures mean
Squarespace’s Help Center identifies Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced as current website plans, but the cited plan guidance does not provide a comparable price schedule. Shopify’s pricing page displayed the following USD figures for annual billing when checked on October 7, 2026; the page said rates were accurate as of October 2, 2026 and subject to change. These are market- and billing-specific advertised prices, not a complete cost comparison.
| Platform and plan | Published price and billing basis | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Squarespace Basic | The cited plan guidance does not list a comparable price. | Current plan names and features are described by Squarespace; check localized plan options. |
| Squarespace Core | The cited plan guidance does not list a comparable price. | Current plan names and features are described by Squarespace; check localized plan options. |
| Squarespace Plus | The cited plan guidance does not list a comparable price. | Current plan names and features are described by Squarespace; check localized plan options. |
| Squarespace Advanced | The cited plan guidance does not list a comparable price. | Current plan names and features are described by Squarespace; check localized plan options. |
| Shopify Basic | USD $29/month with annual billing, as displayed October 7, 2026. | Shopify’s displayed market and billing conditions apply; rates can change. |
| Shopify Grow | USD $79/month with annual billing, as displayed October 7, 2026. | Shopify’s displayed market and billing conditions apply; rates can change. |
| Shopify Advanced | USD $299/month with annual billing, as displayed October 7, 2026. | Shopify’s displayed market and billing conditions apply; rates can change. |
| Shopify Plus | From USD $2,300/month on a three-year term, as displayed October 7, 2026. | Starting figure and term are specific to Shopify’s displayed pricing page; confirm the offer and terms directly. |
Shopify also displays monthly-billing prices separately. Since the relevant amounts can vary by market and billing term, consult Shopify’s live pricing page for the offer applicable to your business. Squarespace says plan availability can change; its plan-selection page is the place to verify current options.
Calculate total cost, not just the subscription
Compare the same expected sales volume and payment setup on each platform. Separate recurring subscription charges from costs that scale with transactions, then include required add-ons and apps.
Rank #4
- Subscription: Use the plan, country, and billing term you would actually choose.
- Card processing: Rates depend on provider, card, and location. Squarespace distinguishes payment-processing rates from its own transaction fees; Shopify likewise treats card processing as separate from possible third-party transaction fees.
- Platform transaction fees: Check whether fees apply to the products or services you sell and the plan you use. Squarespace says its transaction fees depend on plan and product type. Shopify may charge third-party transaction fees when an external payment provider is used; the rate depends on plan and payment circumstances.
- Currency and international costs: Shopify says currency conversion may add a fee when a customer pays in a currency different from the payout currency. Confirm local payment and market features before relying on an international setup.
- Retail and extras: Include any point-of-sale add-on, required app, or other paid feature needed for your workflow.
For details, see Squarespace’s transaction-fee and processing-rate guide and Shopify’s fees and costs documentation. Shopify notes that its fees and payment rates vary by plan, location, and payment circumstances. Its listed US card rates should not be treated as rates for every country.
When upgrading might change the math
A higher plan can be worthwhile if its added features replace paid tools or if lower applicable fees offset the higher subscription. Shopify says the point where an upgrade saves money depends on location and whether Shopify Payments is used. Do the calculation with your own transaction volume, payment provider, and localized rates rather than applying a general sales threshold.
A practical decision checklist
- List what you sell. Include services, content, memberships, and physical products, not only the item that currently generates the most revenue.
- Map each sales channel. Note online, in-person, social, and marketplace needs, then verify the features available for your country and plan.
- Describe the daily workflow. Include catalog and inventory work, fulfillment, shipping and tax tasks, and who handles them.
- Set team requirements. Record the number of staff accounts, access needs, and reports that matter.
- Compare localized total costs. Add the subscription, payment processing, platform transaction fees, conversion charges where relevant, POS or other add-ons, and required apps.
- Test only if you can test both fairly. Use the same store brief, product set, checkout configuration, and mobile checks on each platform; record plan levels, payment setup, apps, dates, and task results. Without those observations, treat usability as untested rather than claiming one platform is easier.
Which platform fits common business profiles?
Portfolio, service, or content business adding sales
Start by assessing Squarespace if a designed brand or content site is the main destination and selling services, memberships, content, or products needs to fit around it. Confirm that the specific plan supports the selling features you need and review its applicable fees.
Best Value
Growing store adding staff or reporting needs
Assess Shopify’s plan tiers against the accounts and reports your team actually needs. Its own guidance identifies those as reasons a business with consistent sales may move beyond its entry tier; compare the added subscription cost with the value of those capabilities and your payment costs.
Retailer selling online and in person
Give extra weight to point-of-sale availability, hardware and software requirements, and any add-on fees. Shopify lists in-person selling and POS Pro as considerations, but verify the exact capabilities and costs for your country and intended setup.
Business selling across borders
Do not choose from a global feature list alone. Check the countries you serve, customer payment currencies, payout currency, available providers, and market-specific duties or tax needs. Fees and availability can differ materially by location.

The cited materials are vendor documentation. They describe advertised plans, features, and fees, but do not independently measure ease of use, site speed, conversion rates, support quality, or store performance. No independent named statistic comparing the two platforms is established here. A claim that one platform won a hands-on side-by-side test would require documented testing conditions and observations, not just published feature pages.
