Squadron 42 is the planned single-player campaign; Star Citizen is the playable, persistent online environment. RSI’s support page updated February 4, 2026 says Squadron 42 remains in development and is not available to download. RSI’s April 16, 2026 getting-started page says Star Citizen’s live environment is accessible with an RSI account and a Game Package. RSI has not stated a release date for Squadron 42 in those support pages.
What is Squadron 42?
RSI describes Squadron 42 as a single-player campaign. It is intended to be a directed story experience rather than the live persistent-universe environment. The campaign is still in development and cannot currently be downloaded, according to RSI’s February 4, 2026 support update.
RSI says account holders with a pledge that includes Squadron 42 will be able to download it after development is complete, the game has been tested, and it has been released. That is a release condition, not a launch date.
What is Star Citizen?
Star Citizen is the live environment built around a persistent online universe. RSI’s April 16, 2026 getting-started checklist says access requires an RSI account and a Game Package. RSI also describes Star Citizen as being in alpha; its Public Test Universe FAQ, updated October 5, 2026, provides that development-stage context.

The availability statements reflect different RSI pages and dates: Squadron 42’s February 4 update and Star Citizen’s April 16 checklist. Check RSI’s current store and support pages before making a purchase, because package contents and access terms can change.
Are they connected, and can you get one without the other?
RSI’s February 9, 2016 package-split explanation described the campaign and persistent universe as related modules in the same fictional universe. It said buyers could choose the single-player campaign, the persistent universe, or both, and described functional connections between them.

That is historical information, not a guarantee of current store terms or how features will work at release. The current package contents should be checked in RSI’s store; the 2016 explanation alone does not establish what a buyer can select today.

What RSI has said the campaign aims to deliver
In a 2019 Letter from the Chairman, Chris Roberts described an ambition to deliver a story-focused space adventure with interactive storytelling and cinematic set pieces. These are developer statements about the intended experience, not confirmation of the finished campaign’s feature set. RSI’s stated ambition was to create “the pinnacle of the single-player story space adventure” and break new ground in interactive storytelling.

Which one fits what you want to play?
- Choose Star Citizen if you want to access the live persistent-universe environment now and are prepared for an alpha-stage experience.
- Consider Squadron 42 if you want a directed single-player story, but understand that it is still in development and has no release date stated in the cited RSI support pages.
- Before pledging, confirm the current package contents, the applicable computer requirements, and the campaign’s release status on RSI’s official pages. RSI’s Pledges FAQ, updated April 14, 2026, explains that a pledge supports development; it is not the same as buying an already released Squadron 42 game.
Controls and flight hardware
RSI’s historical FAQ ties space-combat performance to piloting skill, so a PC flight stick or joystick may be relevant to flight gameplay in general. The reviewed RSI material does not verify a specific device or establish that a particular accessory is supported or recommended for Squadron 42. Check current control and compatibility information before choosing hardware.
