Squadron 42 and Star Citizen are separate products. Squadron 42 is the planned single-player campaign and is not currently available to download. Star Citizen is the playable PC persistent online game, accessed through an RSI Game Package. Buying a Star Citizen package does not by itself prove that Squadron 42 is included, so verify the exact entitlement in the current listing before pledging.

What each game is supposed to be
Squadron 42: a self-contained campaign
RSI describes Squadron 42 as a single-player campaign. That means its core proposition is a directed story experience rather than a shared persistent universe in which other players, live-service updates and an ongoing character account are central to every session. You should think of it as the campaign component of the broader project, not as another name for the currently playable online game.
The distinction matters when you decide what you are buying. A pledge can identify Squadron 42 as its own entitlement, and RSI’s support guidance treats it separately from the normal Star Citizen Game Package. The name appearing near a ship, a package or a Star Citizen account does not establish that the campaign is included.

Star Citizen is the PC game that RSI currently makes available on live servers. Its persistent format is designed around returning to an evolving shared game world rather than completing one fixed campaign and stopping. The official material used for this comparison does not establish a final inventory of activities, a final number of star systems or a definitive end-state feature list, so those details should not be treated as settled specifications.

RSI’s April 16, 2026 “Get Started: Checklist” says access requires an RSI account, a Game Package and a computer that meets the applicable requirements. The April 14, 2026 Pledges FAQ describes a typical Star Citizen Game Package as containing Star Citizen, a ship and other items, while also recognizing a standalone Squadron 42 pledge as an exception. “Typical” is important: package contents can change, and the individual listing controls what your account receives.
Can you play Squadron 42 now?
No. In the RSI Support article “Where can I download Squadron 42?”, updated February 4, 2026, the company states: “Squadron 42 is currently in development and is not available for download.” The same article says that an account with a pledge containing Squadron 42 will be able to download it after development is completed, the game is tested and it has been released.
That wording answers two different questions:
- Ownership entitlement: your account may show that a pledge includes Squadron 42.
- Playable availability: the game still has to complete development and testing and be released before a download is provided.
RSI’s April 16, 2026 checklist makes the same practical point, describing the single-player campaign as still in development and “not yet available.” The cited support pages do not provide a release date. Treat any date found in a forum post, video title or old campaign discussion as unconfirmed unless RSI publishes it in a current official announcement.

- Create or use an RSI account. The account is the identity to which your pledge and entitlements are attached.
- Select a current Star Citizen Game Package. The package is the access requirement RSI identifies for playing Star Citizen today. Do not assume that a ship-only or standalone campaign pledge grants live-game access.
- Read the entitlement line and included items. Confirm that the listing explicitly grants Star Citizen. Check separately whether Squadron 42 is listed; the two entitlements are not interchangeable.
- Check your computer against RSI’s current requirements. The cited guidance requires a qualifying computer but does not establish a reliable specification table for this article. Use the live official requirements before installing or upgrading hardware.
- Install the current game client and sign in with the purchasing account. Access is tied to the account and the entitlements recorded on it.
The exact price, ship, insurance terms and other package contents are not fixed facts that can be safely generalized here. Store offerings change, and RSI’s Pledges FAQ should be read alongside the exact product page you are considering.

Do you need to buy Star Citizen to play Squadron 42?
Do not assume that you do. RSI treats Squadron 42 as a separate pledge entitlement, and its support article says an account owning a pledge containing the campaign will receive download access after release. The reviewed material does not state that owning Star Citizen is a prerequisite for the campaign.
The safer buying rule is to purchase only the entitlement you actually want and verify the current listing. If the product page says it includes Squadron 42, that addresses the campaign entitlement; if it says Star Citizen Game Package, that addresses access to the live online game. If you want both, confirm that both names appear in the selected package rather than relying on a bundle name, a ship name or an older description.
How gameplay differs in practice
Session structure
Squadron 42 is organized around a single-player campaign. Its appeal is a controlled progression through campaign content, without requiring other players to be online for the experience described by its format. Because it has not released, details such as final campaign length, mission count and completed feature inventory remain unverified.
Star Citizen is built as a persistent online experience. Your access is to the live servers, where the game can receive changes and where the state of development affects what you encounter. The practical trade-off is immediacy versus stability: Star Citizen can be played now, but its systems are still subject to change, while Squadron 42 offers no playable campaign until release.

Online persistence and development
The persistent-game format makes Star Citizen suitable for players who want an evolving PC flight-and-space experience and are comfortable with an alpha development process. It is not evidence that every planned system is finished. A current live-server feature demonstrates what is available at that point in development, not a guarantee about the final product or about Squadron 42.
RSI’s “Welcome Back, Pilot” update says Alpha 4.9 reached live servers on July 15, 2026 and describes ship-combat user-interface enhancements. That is a concrete example of the live game changing over time. It does not establish the complete state of every gameplay system, nor does it convert historical campaign promises into final specifications.
Controls and peripherals
A keyboard and mouse or a conventional controller may be the starting point for PC play, but the cited sources do not define a required control scheme. A PC flight stick or HOTAS joystick is an optional category of hardware for readers who want more dedicated flight controls, particularly when engaging with ship-flight and combat play. RSI’s materials identify Star Citizen as a PC game and discuss ship-combat interface changes, but they do not require a joystick, name supported models or provide testing results. Check compatibility for the specific device and current client before spending money.
What the historical scope claims mean
RSI’s official stretch-goals archive records campaign-era crowdfunding targets, including changing mission-count goals for Squadron 42 and star-system goals for Star Citizen. Those entries document how the project’s ambitions were described during fundraising. They are not proof of delivered content, a current mission count, a current system count or a final scope.

This distinction is especially important when comparing the two games. A historical number can look like a specification even though it was a goal subject to change. The reviewed official material does not verify a current Squadron 42 campaign length, a final mission total, a final number of star systems or a definitive release scope. Avoid using those old figures to calculate value or to predict how much content will ship.
What a pledge legally represents
RSI’s legal terms describe contributions as pledges toward development and define entitlements according to the selected pledge and applicable terms. That is different from describing every pledge as a conventional finished-product purchase. Terms may change, and the terms that apply can depend on the pledge date and the specific item selected.
Before paying, save or review the current product description and the applicable pledge terms. Confirm what entitlement is being granted, whether the item is a Game Package or a standalone campaign pledge, and what the page says about access. This is the most reliable way to avoid confusing a development contribution, a ship entitlement and game access.

Choose based on the experience you want now
- Choose Star Citizen access if you want to play the live PC game now and accept an evolving alpha environment, changing systems and package-specific access rules.
- Choose a Squadron 42 entitlement if your priority is the single-player campaign and you are willing to wait for development, testing and release before downloading it.
- Check for both entitlements if you want the live game and the future campaign. Verify both names in the selected listing instead of inferring inclusion from a bundle title.
Questions to answer on the store page
- Does the listing explicitly say “Star Citizen Game Package”?
- Does it explicitly list Squadron 42 as an included entitlement?
- Is the item a standalone campaign pledge rather than a live-game package?
- Which account receives the entitlement?
- What computer requirements and client instructions does RSI publish at the time of purchase?
- Which terms apply to this pledge, and are the contents described as current or subject to change?
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every ship pledge includes the game
A ship shown in a listing is not, by itself, proof of Star Citizen access. RSI’s guidance identifies the Game Package as the requirement for playing Star Citizen today. Read the entitlement text, not just the ship name or the headline image.

Assuming Star Citizen access includes Squadron 42
Live-game access and campaign ownership are separate questions. The Pledges FAQ recognizes a standalone Squadron 42 pledge, and the support article specifically refers to accounts whose pledge contains the campaign. Verify the campaign entitlement in the selected package.
Expecting an immediate Squadron 42 download
An account can own a future entitlement while the game remains unavailable. RSI’s February 4, 2026 support article ties download access to completed development, testing and release. There is no download step to perform today.
Using old stretch goals as a promise
Archived mission and system numbers describe historical goals. They should not be used as current content guarantees, as a release forecast or as a basis for comparing value.
Planning a hardware upgrade from an unverified specification
The cited pages establish that Star Citizen requires a computer meeting RSI’s requirements, but they do not establish a current specification table here. Check the live official requirements before buying memory, storage, a graphics card, a processor or a flight controller.
What remains unknown
The official material used for this comparison does not establish a current Star Citizen price, a complete inventory of live package offers, a Squadron 42 release date, a final campaign length, a final mission count, a final star-system count or a complete current PC specification. Those are transactional or technical details that can change and must be checked on RSI’s live store and support pages.
It also does not justify treating Alpha 4.9’s July 15, 2026 combat-interface changes as a complete description of the game. The update is evidence that the live experience continues to evolve, not a final feature checklist.
Bottom line for the comparison
Star Citizen is the option you can access and play on PC now, provided you have an RSI account, a qualifying computer and a Star Citizen Game Package. Squadron 42 is the separate single-player campaign, and RSI’s February 2026 support guidance says it is still in development and unavailable for download. The central purchase decision is therefore not which title has the better score or larger advertised scope; it is whether you want an evolving online game now, a future campaign entitlement, or both. Verify the exact current package contents and applicable pledge terms before committing.
