For current UE5-era Squad, start with the built-in Defaults benchmark, use a supported rendering setup (DX11 is not supported), and then tune the upscaler, Global Illumination and Shadows for the frame rate your hardware can sustain. Keep Windows and GPU drivers current, verify the microphone and playback devices inside Squad, and press Enter after manually typing numeric settings. This guide explains a repeatable setup for graphics, audio, VOIP and controls rather than prescribing one universal preset.

What changed in current Squad settings

Squad moved to Unreal Engine 5.5 in the 9.0 release cycle. That engine transition changed the sensible starting point for performance tuning: instructions written for the older UE4 renderer can recommend unsupported options or settings that no longer behave the same way. The official 9.0 graphics guidance explicitly states, “DX11 is not supported.” Use the current renderer and current release notes as your baseline instead of forcing an old DirectX 11 launch option.

The same 9.0 guidance asks players to have at least 6 GB of video memory, current GPU drivers and an up-to-date Windows installation. Update 10.6 adds an important qualification: Offworld Industries hopes to revisit the 6 GB recommendation and possibly lower it to 4 GB after additional testing. That is an evaluation, not a confirmed replacement requirement, so a 6 GB target remains the safer planning figure until an official change is published.

Settings are divided into gameplay, video, sound and controls areas from the main menu. Changes can be made before joining a server, which is the best time to benchmark and rebind keys without a firefight interrupting you.

Before changing anything: establish a clean baseline

Check software and hardware prerequisites

  • Install the latest GPU driver offered for your graphics card and apply pending Windows updates.
  • Confirm that your card has at least 6 GB of VRAM when using the 9.0 guidance as the conservative target. Cards with less memory may need lower texture and overall-quality choices, and can still encounter streaming or hitching problems.
  • Remove obsolete DX11 launch arguments or configuration advice copied from UE4-era guides; DX11 is not supported in the official 9.0 guidance.
  • Close overlays, recording tools and browser tabs temporarily while you establish a baseline. Re-enable them one at a time if performance remains stable.

Run the built-in benchmark first

  1. Open Squad and enter Settings from the main menu.
  2. Open the Video section.
  3. Select Defaults to run the game’s built-in benchmark and load a known starting configuration.
  4. Record the resulting frame-rate behavior in a representative scene. Pay attention to the lowest moments and stutter, not only the highest number shown in an empty area.
  5. Change one demanding option at a time, apply it, and repeat the same test. This gives you a cause-and-effect comparison instead of guessing which setting helped.

The benchmark is a starting measurement, not a promise of identical performance on every map or server. Large battles, effects, foliage and long sight lines can be heavier than a menu test, so leave some headroom rather than tuning until the benchmark barely meets your target.

Graphics settings: trade image quality for stable frames

Think of each graphics change as a choice between GPU workload, image clarity and hardware generation. If the GPU is saturated, reduce the options that draw or light more pixels. If the image is sharp but frame time is erratic, test the upscaler and shadows before dropping every setting to Low.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upscaler resolution

Upscaler resolution is the most direct sharpness-versus-performance control. A lower internal resolution gives the GPU fewer pixels to render and can raise frame rate, but distant player silhouettes, foliage and fine edges become softer. Start at the benchmark’s value, then lower it in small steps until the heavy scenes meet your minimum acceptable frame rate. Raise it again if the picture is too blurry and recover performance with a more targeted setting reduction.

Do not judge an upscaler from a static menu. Move through foliage, look across a long sight line and inspect distant structures. Temporal reconstruction can look acceptable while standing still yet show ghosting or shimmer during movement.

  • Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.

Global Illumination Quality

Global Illumination affects indirect lighting and the way terrain, buildings and interiors receive bounced light. It is one of the demanding settings called out in the official 9.0 guidance. If your frame rate falls when looking toward complex terrain or lit interiors, lower Global Illumination before immediately sacrificing the entire preset. The visual trade-off is less nuanced lighting and darker or flatter-looking areas, while geometry and textures can remain comparatively detailed.

Shadows

Shadows can consume substantial GPU time, especially with many objects and long view distances. Lowering Shadow quality generally improves frame time in outdoor scenes and during large engagements. Check player readability after the change: overly low shadows can remove useful grounding cues and make terrain transitions look harsh. If you have a modern GPU with headroom, increase Shadows one step at a time rather than jumping directly to Epic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Overall quality presets

Use presets as a starting profile, then override individual settings. The official guide notes that UE5 Medium can provide higher quality than the old UE4 Epic preset, so comparing names across engine generations is misleading. UE5 High and Epic are intended for modern GPUs and are not recommended for previous GPU generations. Begin at Medium or a lower preset on an older card, benchmark, and raise only the options that improve the image you actually need.

Hardware situation Recommended starting point What to adjust first Expected trade-off
Modern GPU with ample VRAM UE5 High, then benchmark Upscaler resolution, Global Illumination, Shadows Higher fidelity is possible, but heavy scenes can still require targeted reductions
Previous-generation GPU UE5 Medium or lower Upscaler resolution, Shadows, then Global Illumination More consistent frame time with reduced lighting and shadow detail
GPU near or below the conservative 6 GB VRAM guidance Defaults benchmark followed by a low or medium profile Internal resolution and memory-heavy quality options Lower sharpness and detail may be necessary to avoid hitching or streaming pressure

The table describes starting points, not guaranteed frame rates. CPU limits, resolution, map, server population and background applications can all become the limiting factor.

Resolution, display mode and frame-rate target

Use your monitor’s native resolution when clarity matters, then use the upscaler to control workload. A lower display resolution can improve performance but makes the interface and distant targets less crisp. Fullscreen, borderless and windowed modes can interact differently with overlays and multi-monitor setups; keep the mode that gives you reliable focus and frame pacing, then test changes with the same benchmark route.

Choose a frame-rate cap only after observing uncapped behavior. A cap slightly below the rate your system can hold may reduce oscillation and fan noise. Do not cap at a number your hardware reaches only in quiet scenes; the result will feel inconsistent during combat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical graphics-tuning procedure

  1. Apply Defaults in Video settings and restart the test scene.
  2. Set your native display resolution and a sensible frame-rate target for your monitor.
  3. Test the upscaler resolution. Lower it until heavy scenes meet the target, then raise it one step if clarity is unacceptable.
  4. If the GPU remains the limit, lower Global Illumination Quality and retest.
  5. Lower Shadows if outdoor fights or dense areas still cause drops.
  6. Only then move the overall preset up or down. Recheck individual overrides after a preset change because presets can replace them.
  7. Play a real match or training scenario. Keep the profile that delivers stable lows and readable targets, not the one with the best menu number.

Audio and VOIP: make the microphone reliable

Squad’s audio menu cannot correct every Windows routing problem. A headset can be connected and still fail if Windows has selected a webcam microphone, a disabled device or an enhancement layer that interferes with capture. Update 10.6 specifically records two relevant fixes: VOIP could fail when Windows Audio Enhancements were enabled, and players could be prevented from selecting or changing an audio input device in Squad’s Settings menu.

Verify the Windows side first

  1. Open Windows sound settings and identify the microphone you intend to use. Speak while watching the input meter to confirm that Windows receives signal.
  2. Set that microphone as the active input for the system or the communications profile you use with Squad.
  3. Inspect the device’s properties for Audio Enhancements. If voice chat fails or sounds processed, test with enhancements disabled, then restart Squad before retesting.
  4. Check that the microphone is not muted by a hardware switch, headset wheel or keyboard shortcut.
  5. Close other applications that may seize exclusive control of the microphone, then launch Squad again.

Choose and test the device in Squad

  1. From the main menu, open Settings and then Sound.
  2. Select the intended audio input device rather than relying on an ambiguous “Default” entry when several microphones are present.
  3. Apply the change and use Squad’s voice indicators or a cooperative teammate to confirm transmission.
  4. If the device list does not let you select or change an input, restart the game after checking Windows permissions and updates; the 10.6 notes identify that selection issue as a fixed bug, so later hotfixes may alter the exact behavior.
  5. Test local, squad and command channels separately if your keybinds expose them. A working microphone with the wrong channel assignment can look like a hardware failure.

There is no universally correct volume mix. Headset frequency response, Windows routing and personal tolerance for effects all differ. Set master, effects and voice levels so spoken instructions remain intelligible during explosions, then adjust after a real match rather than copying another player’s percentages.

VOIP failure checklist

  • No input meter in Windows: fix the device, privacy permission or hardware mute before changing Squad.
  • Windows meter works, Squad hears nothing: select the specific microphone in Sound settings, disable Audio Enhancements as a test, and restart.
  • Teammates hear intermittent or distorted speech: lower the microphone gain or boost, remove enhancement processing and check for competing applications.
  • You can hear effects but not players: verify voice volume and output device, then confirm you are listening to the correct channel.
  • Only one server or channel fails: check the channel keybind and squad permissions before replacing hardware.

Controls and key rebinding

The Controls area is separate from gameplay, video and sound settings. Rebinding is most useful when it reduces hand movement without making communication or movement actions unreliable. Prioritize actions you use under pressure: voice channels, map, stance, interaction and any frequently repeated movement command.

How to rebind safely

  1. Open Settings from the main menu and choose Controls.
  2. Select the action you want to change and press the new key or mouse button.
  3. Check for a conflict warning or a second action that lost the old binding. Resolve intentional conflicts immediately so you do not discover them during a match.
  4. Leave the page and return to the action list to confirm the new binding is still displayed.
  5. Test the key in a training area or low-risk server before changing several related actions.

Hotfix 1 changed an important usability detail: pressing Escape while rebinding no longer backs you out of the control-settings page. You can therefore use Escape without accidentally abandoning the page, but still confirm each change in the list.

Numeric settings and the Enter key

Hotfix 10.6.1 states that manually entered numeric values in Settings apply when Enter is pressed. Type the value, press Enter, and then verify that the displayed value remains after moving to another option. Clicking elsewhere without committing can leave the previous value active, which makes a performance comparison invalid.

Build a conflict-resistant layout

  • Keep movement and stance controls reachable without releasing your primary movement keys.
  • Place map and communication actions where you can activate them while moving, but avoid neighboring keys that are easy to hit accidentally.
  • Use distinct mouse buttons for actions that must be available while aiming only if your mouse provides consistent actuation.
  • After rebinding, test entering a vehicle, interacting with objects, opening the map and transmitting on each voice channel.
  • Export or record your preferred layout outside the game if you frequently reinstall or switch machines; the exact in-game storage behavior can change with updates.

Diagnosing performance after tuning

When lowering settings does little

If reducing Global Illumination and Shadows barely changes frame rate, the CPU, server simulation, resolution scaling or an external process may be limiting you. Restore one visual setting, observe frame-time behavior and avoid degrading image quality when the GPU is not the bottleneck. A stable cap and fewer overlays can help frametime consistency even when average FPS is unchanged.

When the game looks blurry

Raise upscaler resolution first, because it directly controls internal rendering sharpness. If performance falls too far, lower Shadows or Global Illumination instead of continuing to reduce resolution. Check that a preset change did not silently replace your custom upscaler value.

When stutter appears after loading into a match

Confirm driver and Windows updates, then compare a lower-quality profile with the same resolution. Near the conservative VRAM target, streaming pressure can produce hitching even when average FPS appears acceptable. The 6 GB figure remains the official 9.0-era guidance; the possible 4 GB revision mentioned in 10.6 has not been confirmed.

Keep settings current after updates

Squad’s release notes can change both performance recommendations and menu behavior. Update 10.6 includes broader performance improvements and notes that low graphics presets may improve performance at the cost of visual fidelity. Hotfixes 10.6.1 and Hotfix 1 changed numeric-value confirmation and rebinding navigation respectively. After a major update, rerun Defaults, verify your input and output devices, and retest the handful of bindings you rely on most. Do not assume an older keybind or graphics guide still matches the current interface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DX11 available for Squad now?

No. The official Update 9.0 graphics guidance states that DX11 is not supported, so remove DX11-specific launch arguments and use the current renderer.

Do I need exactly 6 GB of VRAM?

Six gigabytes is the conservative figure in the 9.0 guidance. Update 10.6 says Offworld Industries hopes to evaluate a 4 GB recommendation after additional testing, but that change is not confirmed.

Why does my microphone work in Windows but not in Squad?

Select the intended input device in Squad’s Sound settings, test with Windows Audio Enhancements disabled, and restart the game. Update 10.6 documented failures related to enhancements and input-device selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did my typed graphics value not change?

In Hotfix 10.6.1, manually entered numeric settings apply when you press Enter. Commit the value and verify it remains displayed before testing performance.
