Yes. You can use a friendly DNS name as the server name in a SQL Server connection string, provided it resolves to the right server and the connection also specifies any required instance or port. A DNS name is not the same thing as a SQL Server client alias: DNS maps a name to a server, while a client alias can hold connection details such as protocol and port.
DNS name or SQL Server client alias: what is the difference?
| Configuration | Where it is managed | What it provides | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DNS name or record | In DNS | A server name that clients can use in connection strings, if they can resolve it | DNS resolution alone does not specify a SQL instance or custom port, and the name must be compatible with TLS certificate validation. |
| SQL Server client alias | On each client that relies on it | An alternate connection name that can encapsulate protocol and connection details | Deploy and maintain matching configuration on every relevant client. For SQL Server 2022 and later, Microsoft says SQL Server Configuration Manager does not create these aliases; it directs users to SQL Server Client Network Utility. Microsoft’s SQL Server alias guidance covers the client-side configuration. |
A DNS name can be used by clients that can resolve it, without configuring a SQL client alias on each one. That does not make it a universal replacement: DNS supplies the server name, while a client alias can include connection parameters.
Microsoft also documents a DNS alias feature for Azure SQL Database that can redirect an alias to another server, such as during a test-to-production transition or server move. That is an Azure SQL Database feature, not a general SQL Server capability implied by creating an ordinary DNS record. See Microsoft’s Azure SQL Database DNS alias overview.
How to use a friendly DNS name in a connection string
Use the DNS name as the server name, then include the protocol, instance, or port details the connection requires. Microsoft documents the general format as [<protocol>:]<instance>[,<port>]. For example, a default instance on a custom TCP port can be addressed as tcp:sqlprod.example.com,51433.

TCP port 1433 is the default for a default SQL Server instance. An administrator can configure a different port. The DNS name itself does not tell the client which custom port to use. Microsoft describes the connection-string syntax and examples in its SQL Server connection string documentation.
For a default instance
Use the friendly DNS name as the server name. If the server listens on the default TCP port, a separate port may not be needed; for a custom port, specify it explicitly, for example tcp:sqlprod.example.com,51433.

For a named instance
A named instance is identified separately from the host name, commonly in serverinstance form. Named instances may use dynamically assigned TCP ports. SQL Server Browser can provide instance and port discovery; if discovery is unavailable, or the instance uses a known custom port, configure the connection with the port information the client needs. See Microsoft’s SQL Server Browser service documentation.

A successful DNS lookup proves only that the name resolves; it does not establish that SQL Server is listening or reachable. For SQL Server on Windows over TCP, confirm that TCP/IP is enabled on the server, the client targets the correct instance or port, and the network path and firewall allow that connection. Microsoft’s network protocol guidance explains enabling TCP/IP.

- Check name resolution from the client network. Test the fully qualified DNS name and confirm it resolves to the intended server. A short name can fail when the client uses an incorrect DNS suffix.
- Test the actual TCP port. In PowerShell, run
Test-NetConnection <server> -Port <port>, replacing the values with the DNS name and SQL Server port. Microsoft includes this approach in its SQL Server network connectivity troubleshooting guidance. - If the port is unreachable, check the network path. Review DNS, routing, firewall rules, and whether the server is listening on that port.
- If the port is reachable but SQL Server still fails, check client and server connection details. Confirm the driver, connection string, any client alias, TCP/IP configuration, and the correct instance or port.
- If the error concerns TLS, check the certificate name. Compare the connection name with the certificate’s CN or SAN, then use the supported certificate-name setting described below if appropriate.
Microsoft’s troubleshooting article identifies possible client-side causes including the application, connection string, driver, SQL alias (32-bit or 64-bit), hosts file, and incorrect DNS suffix; it notes that a fully qualified name may connect when a short name does not. A DNS resolution problem is only one possible source of a connection failure.

A DNS alias can resolve correctly and still fail certificate validation. Microsoft.Data.SqlClient checks whether the certificate’s common name (CN) or subject alternative name (SAN) matches the server name used for the connection. If clients connect using a DNS alias that differs from the certificate name, check that identity mismatch rather than treating DNS resolution as proof that TLS should succeed.

Starting with Microsoft.Data.SqlClient 5.0, the HostNameInCertificate connection-string option lets an application specify the expected certificate name when it differs from the connection name. Use the certificate identity that the server is expected to present; do not make disabling certificate validation the routine workaround. See Microsoft’s SqlClient encryption and certificate validation guidance.
