SQL Doctor is best understood as a project concept: a local-first tutor that would help DBMS students interpret PostgreSQL errors and learn the SQL idea behind them. PostgreSQL’s five-character SQLSTATE codes provide a stable starting point for explanations, but no implementation or learning results are established for SQL Doctor itself.

How would SQL Doctor help you understand a PostgreSQL error?

A useful tutor would preserve PostgreSQL’s own diagnosis, then translate it into a learning opportunity. A proposed explanation loop would show the SQLSTATE code and original server message, describe the reported condition in plain language, connect it to relevant query or schema context when available, and suggest one small correction or diagnostic step. It would then explain the underlying SQL concept so the student can recognize similar mistakes later.

That sequence is a design recommendation, not a verified feature set. An error code identifies the condition PostgreSQL reported; it does not necessarily reveal why the query reached that condition or which fix is appropriate. Repair advice may depend on the query, schema, data, PostgreSQL version, and lab rules. A responsible tutor should mark likely causes as possibilities and invite the student to inspect the relevant query or schema rather than state a guess as fact.

What does a PostgreSQL SQLSTATE code mean?

PostgreSQL server errors have five-character SQLSTATE codes. The first two characters identify the error class, while the final three identify a particular condition within that class. The code can therefore help a student distinguish the broad kind of failure from the specific condition reported.

The PostgreSQL documentation advises applications to test the error code rather than parse the human-readable message. As the PostgreSQL Global Development Group puts it, “Applications that need to know which error condition has occurred should usually test the error code, rather than looking at the textual error message.” Codes are less likely to change between releases and are not localized, which makes them a better basis for consistent identification than message wording. Read PostgreSQL’s error-code appendix.

The message remains useful to the person learning SQL: it gives readable context alongside the code. PostgreSQL may also report a relevant database object separately from the message, but students should not assume every error includes a dependable object name. The documentation’s stated complete-coverage note applies to integrity-constraint class 23, not all error classes.

How could it work without an internet connection?

A local tutor needs a PostgreSQL runtime available on the student’s device, not just an interface for explaining errors. PGlite documents a PostgreSQL build compiled to WebAssembly for browsers and JavaScript runtimes, including Node.js and Bun. It offers in-memory use and persistent storage options; browser persistence can use IndexedDB, while Node.js and Bun can persist to a filesystem path. These capabilities make PGlite a plausible implementation candidate, but they do not show that SQL Doctor has been built or verified to work offline.

“Offline” also depends on how the app is delivered. A student may need to load the application and its runtime assets before disconnecting. A prototype would need testing with the network disabled after initial setup, including a check that its saved database survives the intended restart. The exact behavior depends on the chosen runtime and storage mode. PGlite documentation and its usage guide describe the available approaches.

What should students check before relying on a local tutor?

  • Version and feature compatibility: Confirm the local PostgreSQL version and verify that the lab’s required SQL features and extensions work in that runtime.
  • Offline startup: Load the app and required assets, disconnect the network, and test whether it can still start and run queries.
  • Persistence and reset behavior: Check what happens to practice data after closing the app, and how to clear or recreate a database for a fresh exercise.
  • Course fit: Run the instructor’s actual exercises, including any required extensions, before using the tutor as a substitute for the lab environment.
  • Device setup: Check whether the approach works on the student’s browser or operating system and whether setup is practical for the class.

Even a successful local test cannot guarantee identical behavior to the lab server unless the relevant versions, configuration, data, and extensions match. Use the lab environment for final verification when a submission depends on its exact setup.

Where does it fit in a DBMS course?

The official PostgreSQL tutorial offers hands-on practice with core topics including creating tables, inserting and querying data, joins, aggregates, updates, and deletes. It can provide a curriculum framework for exercises that a tutor explains, but it is an introduction rather than a comprehensive reference. Open the PostgreSQL tutorial.

For a student, the value of an error tutor would be less about hiding every mistake than making each mistake interpretable. Until a specific SQL Doctor prototype has been demonstrated and tested, treat it as a promising design idea—not a proven offline app or a measured improvement in learning outcomes.
