DDL defines database objects, DML works with table rows, DCL controls privileges, and TCL manages whether a transaction’s work is committed or rolled back. These four labels are a useful way to learn SQL, but they are a teaching framework—not a guarantee that every database system classifies or handles every statement the same way.
What do DDL, DML, DCL and TCL mean?
The letters identify four broad kinds of SQL work. One way to keep them straight is to picture a table as a container: DDL changes the container, DML changes its contents, DCL manages who may use it, and TCL decides whether a related set of changes is kept or undone. That analogy is a learning aid, not a formal SQL definition.
| Group | What it acts on | Typical commands | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| DDL (Data Definition Language) | Database structure and objects | CREATE, ALTER, DROP |
Creates, changes or removes objects such as tables. |
| DML (Data Manipulation Language) | Rows stored in tables | INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE |
Adds, changes or removes table data. |
| DCL (Data Control Language) | Privileges on database objects | GRANT, REVOKE |
Assigns or removes access privileges. |
| TCL (Transaction Control Language) | The state of a transaction | BEGIN, COMMIT, ROLLBACK |
Starts a transaction, keeps its work or aborts it. |
PostgreSQL’s SQL command reference describes individual commands, while its language guide provides a learning-oriented introduction. The reference says, “This part contains reference information for the SQL commands supported by PostgreSQL.”

DDL changes database objects rather than the ordinary rows inside them. In PostgreSQL, CREATE TABLE defines a table, ALTER TABLE changes one, and DROP TABLE removes one. These commands make structural changes; they are not substitutes for inserting or editing a row.
#1 Best Overall
CREATE TABLE orders (
order_id integer,
customer_name text
);
This example establishes an orders table with two columns. The PostgreSQL command reference lists these table commands and their roles.
DML: how do you work with table rows?
DML operates on the data stored in a table. PostgreSQL’s introductory guide treats inserting, updating and deleting data as data manipulation. For example, an application might add an order, correct a customer name, or remove a row that should no longer be present.

INSERT INTO orders (order_id, customer_name)
VALUES (101, 'Avery Chen');
UPDATE orders
SET customer_name = 'Avery C.'
WHERE order_id = 101;
DELETE FROM orders
WHERE order_id = 101;
Use a condition such as WHERE carefully with UPDATE and DELETE: without a suitably restrictive condition, a statement can affect more rows than intended. PostgreSQL covers these operations in its Data Manipulation chapter and command reference.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →DCL: how do you manage access?
DCL concerns privileges: what a role is allowed to do with an object. GRANT assigns privileges and REVOKE removes them. For example, the following PostgreSQL statement grants a role named analyst permission to read from orders:
GRANT SELECT ON orders TO analyst;
Privilege rules depend on the object type. Ownership also matters: PostgreSQL distinguishes an object owner’s rights from ordinary privileges that can be granted to other roles. See the PostgreSQL Privileges guide for its explanation of ownership, grants and revocations.
TCL: how do you keep or undo a group of changes?
TCL is a convenient teaching label for transaction-control statements. A transaction groups work so that it can be committed or aborted. In PostgreSQL, BEGIN (also written START TRANSACTION) starts a transaction; COMMIT commits the current transaction, while ROLLBACK aborts it.
Rank #4
BEGIN;
INSERT INTO orders (order_id, customer_name)
VALUES (102, 'Morgan Lee');
COMMIT;
If the work should instead be abandoned before it is committed, issue ROLLBACK; in place of COMMIT;. Transaction behavior and the statements that can be used in a transaction depend on the database system and context, so consult the documentation for the database and version you use.
How do the four groups fit together in an order-table example?
- Define the object with DDL: use
CREATE TABLE orders (...)to establish the table’s structure. - Work with its rows using DML: use
INSERT INTO orders ...to add an order, orUPDATEandDELETEto change or remove rows. - Set access with DCL: use
GRANT SELECT ON orders TO analyst;to give theanalystrole read privilege in this PostgreSQL example. - Control a unit of work with TCL: use
BEGIN;before related changes, thenCOMMIT;to commit them orROLLBACK;to abort the current transaction.
The commands have different jobs: changing a table’s structure, changing its rows, assigning access and controlling a transaction are not interchangeable operations. The syntax, privileges and transaction behavior in these examples follow PostgreSQL’s documentation; another database may differ. PostgreSQL’s command index points to individual command pages for standards conformance and compatibility details.

Are these SQL categories universal?
No. DDL, DML, DCL and TCL are widely used explanatory labels, but they should not be treated as a cross-database rulebook. SQL implementations document commands individually, and the category a statement is placed in—or whether it can run within a transaction—may depend on the product and version. Check the current command documentation for your system when classification or behavior matters.
