For a team already invested in Spring, Spring Boot 4 is the more natural fit; Quarkus can suit teams whose priorities and deployment mode align with its approach. But Quarkus 3.27 is no longer the line to choose for a new deployment: on September 30, 2026, the project called 3.27.6 its last planned maintenance update and pointed users toward newer lines. Treat this as a comparison of the named versions, not a recommendation to deploy them without checking current support.

As of October 7, 2026, Spring’s requirements page lists Spring Boot 4.0.8 and identifies 4.1.1 as the latest stable release. Quarkus lists 3.40 as a new LTS line; its 4.0.0.Beta1 announcement is a beta, not a final release. The practical choice is therefore both a framework decision and a release-lifecycle decision.

Which framework is the better fit?

There is no evidence-backed universal winner between Spring Boot and Quarkus for every Java service. Choose based on your team’s existing skills and dependencies, the service’s actual deployment requirements, and the support horizon of the exact release line. Do not select either framework on a generalized claim that it is faster or uses less memory: the available sources do not establish a controlled, comparable performance result.

  • Lean toward Spring Boot 4 if your team already works in Spring or values its documented model of starters, opinionated defaults, and automatic configuration.
  • Consider Quarkus if its framework approach and the needs of your workload fit your team. For a new Quarkus deployment, evaluate a currently maintained line rather than treating 3.27 as current.
  • Benchmark before deciding on performance if startup time, memory, throughput, or native-image behavior is decisive. Results depend on the application, extensions, runtime mode, hardware, and test method.

What the named versions offer

Spring Boot 4

Spring Boot describes itself as an opinionated framework built around starter dependencies and auto-configuration. Its project page also highlights production-oriented features such as metrics, health checks, and externalized configuration. Those are documented design goals, not proof that every service needs less code or runs faster. See the Spring Boot project overview.

Spring Boot 4.0.0 was announced on November 20, 2025, as a generation built on Spring Framework 7. The announcement highlights modularization into smaller, focused jars, JSpecify null-safety improvements, Java 25 support while retaining Java 17 compatibility, API versioning, and HTTP Service Clients. See the Spring Boot 4.0.0 release announcement.

Quarkus 3.27

Quarkus announced 3.27 as an LTS release on September 24, 2025, under a policy of 12 months of LTS support. The announcement described 3.27.0 as a rebadged 3.26.4 with no core changes. That release history is useful context, but it does not establish feature parity or a performance advantage over Spring Boot. See the Quarkus 3.27 release announcement.

Check the release line before committing

The named comparison has an important lifecycle caveat. On September 30, 2026, Quarkus announced that 3.27.6 was the last planned update to the 3.27 stream and advised remaining users to look at 3.33 or 3.40. The Quarkus release index identifies 3.40 as a new LTS line. This means a team choosing Quarkus now should assess a currently maintained version and its compatibility rather than assume 3.27 remains the right starting point. See the Quarkus 3.27.6 announcement and Quarkus release index.

Quarkus 4.0.0.Beta1 was announced on October 1, 2026, and is a beta, not a final release. A separate Quarkus announcement says version 4 raises the Java baseline to 21; that statement applies to Quarkus 4 and should not be projected onto Quarkus 3.27. See the Quarkus 4.0.0.Beta1 announcement and Quarkus 4 Java baseline announcement.

Compare the requirements you can verify

The published Spring Boot 4.0 system-requirements page gives a concrete baseline for version 4.0.8. The available official material here does not establish the corresponding Quarkus 3.27 Java and build-tool matrix, so verify it from the documentation for the Quarkus line you plan to use rather than inferring it from Quarkus 4.

How to make the decision for your service

  1. Map your current stack. List the frameworks, libraries, operational conventions, and team skills the service must work with. Spring familiarity and dependencies can make Spring Boot a lower-friction choice; weigh those against the requirements of the service rather than assuming a framework switch is automatically beneficial.
  2. Choose a supported release first. Record the exact version line and verify its maintenance status. For Quarkus, do not treat 3.27 as a fresh starting point after the project’s 3.27.6 end-of-stream announcement. For Spring Boot, distinguish the 4.0 line from the latest stable version identified by its project page.
  3. Confirm the platform baseline. Match Java, build-tool, framework, and server requirements to your existing environment. Use official version-specific requirements; do not transfer Quarkus 4’s Java 21 baseline to Quarkus 3.27.
  4. Test the workload that matters. If performance is a deciding factor, build representative versions of the service with the intended extensions, runtime mode, and deployment configuration. Run them on the same hardware with the same workload and measurement method, and compare the metric that matters to your service.

Is one faster or more memory-efficient?

The cited material does not establish a comparative result for startup time, memory use, throughput, or native-image performance. A result from a different application or deployment mode would not settle the question for your service. If those metrics determine the choice, use a reproducible, workload-specific comparison and document the application, extensions, runtime mode, hardware, and test conditions.
