If a Spring AI stream running on version 2.0.1 stops after about 60 seconds, a documented timeout bug may be responsible: Spring says a per-call timeout overrode the configured OpenAI timeout values and aborted longer streaming turns. The fix is documented in Spring AI 2.1.0-M1, but that is a milestone release—not proof that every one-minute cutoff is caused by Spring AI. Spring’s September 25, 2026 release announcement describes the issue and the affected settings.
Why does a Spring AI stream stop after 60 seconds?
Spring’s release announcement identifies a specific regression in Spring AI 2.0.1’s OpenAI integration. In that version, each request carried a 60-second per-call timeout that overrode configured timeout values. As a result, streaming turns lasting longer than a minute could be aborted, sometimes with the exception OpenAIIoException: Stream failed.
This is a version-specific explanation, not a general rule about streaming. The release note does not show that every connection closing near the one-minute mark is caused by Spring AI; a network, proxy, or other intermediary may still need investigation if the conditions do not match the documented defect.

Spring says Spring AI 2.1.0-M1 honors both spring.ai.openai.timeout and spring.ai.openai.chat.timeout again. The documented change is therefore relevant when all of the following apply:

- The failing request uses the OpenAI integration.
- The stream runs longer than a minute and may fail with
OpenAIIoException: Stream failed.
Spring identifies 2.1.0-M1 as the first milestone of the 2.1 line. The announcement warns that milestone APIs can change before general availability, so check the project’s current release notes and compatibility guidance before choosing an upgrade. The announcement alone does not establish which later versions are available or which versions contain the fix.
How to check whether this applies to your application
- Confirm the Spring AI version. Check the dependency version actually resolved by your build, rather than relying only on a version written in a parent file or version catalog. The documented regression is in 2.0.1.
- Confirm the provider integration. The release note concerns Spring AI’s OpenAI integration; it does not establish the same defect for other provider integrations.
- Compare the symptom and error. A stream lasting beyond 60 seconds and an
OpenAIIoException: Stream failedare consistent with the report, but are not by themselves proof of its cause. - Review the configured values. Check whether
spring.ai.openai.timeoutorspring.ai.openai.chat.timeoutis set, then compare behavior against Spring’s description of 2.0.1 and the 2.1.0-M1 fix. - Check the current release guidance before upgrading. Confirm the release’s stability and compatibility for your application; 2.1.0-M1 is a milestone, and later version status is not established by the announcement.
- If the version or integration does not match, investigate the connection path. Check application logs and the components between the application and provider to determine where the stream closes. The cited Spring announcement does not diagnose failures outside its stated version and integration.
Does Spring AI 2.0.1 ignore my OpenAI timeout setting?
Spring’s announcement says that in 2.0.1 a per-call 60-second timeout overrode the configured timeout values, so those settings did not govern the request as expected. It says both named settings are honored again in 2.1.0-M1. That finding applies to the documented OpenAI integration and does not establish how other versions or integrations behave.
