Neither service is a universal winner for game music. The better choice is the one that has the exact soundtrack edition you want in your country, offers the right version (official album, game video, remix, or cover), and fits how you listen offline. Spotify has a confirmed official Nintendo Game Music playlist featuring Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. YouTube Music combines music search with YouTube’s large video ecosystem, including albums, music videos, remixes, and covers. Check your favorite games on both services before subscribing.
The short answer
Choose Spotify when the specific game albums you want are available there and you value its documented lossless option or a conventional album-focused listening experience. Choose YouTube Music when the recordings you need are easier to find through YouTube’s ecosystem, or when you want official albums alongside videos, remixes, covers, and other versions.

That recommendation is intentionally title-specific. No reliable, comparable statistic establishes that either service has the larger licensed video game soundtrack catalog worldwide. Availability changes by country, account region, rights holder, and release edition. A soundtrack can be present on one service, absent on the other, or represented by a video or cover rather than the official album.

Why catalog size is the wrong comparison
“How many soundtracks do they have?” sounds measurable, but the answer depends on definitions that the services do not publish in a directly comparable form.
- Game identity: A game may have an original score, a soundtrack album, a re-recording, a sequel album, or several regional editions.
- Release type: An official album is different from a long gameplay video, a fan upload, a cover, a remix, or a compilation.
- Territory: Music licensing is often country-specific. A release visible to one account may not be playable to another.
- Version: Track order, mastering, bonus tracks, and naming can differ between an original release and a later anniversary or expanded edition.
- Availability date: A rights holder can add, replace, or remove a release without either service becoming permanently “better.”
The practical question is therefore: Does this service have the exact game, edition, and recording I want where I live? Neither platform’s published features prove a universal catalog winner.
What each service actually offers for game music
Spotify’s documented game-music example
On April 24, 2026, Spotify announced a Nintendo Game Music Official Playlist featuring soundtrack music from Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Spotify described the playlist as a way to revisit the games’ adventures, characters, and stages through official soundtracks. This is a concrete, dated example of licensed game music on Spotify, not an audit of every game soundtrack available on the service.
Recommended Free Tools
When you find a game release on Spotify, check whether it is an album, an official playlist, or an individual track. A playlist can be useful for discovery, but its presence does not establish that every related game, sequel, regional edition, or bonus track is available.
YouTube Music’s broader format mix
YouTube Music supports search, category filters, personalized discovery, a library, and Sound Search. Google’s YouTube Music documentation describes access to music videos, full albums, remixes, and covers on YouTube. That breadth can help when a soundtrack was uploaded as a video, when you want alternate arrangements, or when the official album is difficult to locate through album metadata.
The trade-off is verification. A search result can be a licensed album, an official channel upload, a fan-made video, a cover, or a remix. YouTube’s larger video ecosystem should not be treated automatically as proof of official soundtrack licensing or consistent audio quality.

How to check a soundtrack before you subscribe
Use the same process on both services so that a promising search result does not become an expensive disappointment.
- Search several ways. Enter the game title, then try “original soundtrack,” “OST,” the composer’s name, and the publisher or developer. Soundtrack naming is inconsistent.
- Open the release rather than trusting the result title. Check the album or video page, track list, release year, label or uploader, and total number of tracks.
- Identify the version. Decide whether you need the original score, an expanded edition, a remaster, a live recording, a remix album, or a cover. Do not assume that similarly named releases are interchangeable.
- Confirm your territory. Sign in with the account and country you will actually use. A result that appears in a search may still be unavailable for playback in your region.
- Test representative tracks. Play the opening track, a favorite cue, and any bonus track that matters to you. This catches incomplete albums and incorrect uploads.
- Check ownership signals. On YouTube Music, distinguish an album or music release from a standard YouTube video and inspect the channel or uploader. On Spotify, distinguish an official release from a user-created playlist that merely points to tracks.
- Repeat for at least two or three games. One successful search does not predict availability for an entire franchise or publisher.
Keep a short list of the games that matter most. Your choice should be based on that list, not on a general reputation for having a large music catalog.
Offline listening: the clearest practical difference
Both services document offline music downloads for paid members, and both require periodic internet access to keep those downloads active. The limits and wording differ.
| Feature | Spotify | YouTube Music |
|---|---|---|
| Who can download music | Spotify Premium members, according to Spotify’s US Premium offline-download page | YouTube Music Premium members |
| Documented allowance | Up to 10,000 songs on each of up to five devices on the cited US page | A song-count or device allowance is not stated in the available documentation |
| Reconnection requirement | Reconnect at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active | Reconnect at least once every 30 days |
| Availability risk | Downloads depend on the release remaining available under the account and plan terms | Downloaded content can disappear if a creator changes availability or restrictions |
| What to verify locally | Plan eligibility, device limits, and whether the US-page limits apply to your country | Regional Premium availability, device behavior, and what happens when a video or release changes status |
Spotify’s 10,000-song figure is specifically a current US page statement, not a promise that every country or plan uses the same limit. YouTube Music documents the 30-day reconnection rule but does not provide a directly comparable download quota in the material available here.
Downloading on Spotify
- Open the soundtrack album or playlist in the Spotify app.
- Use the album or playlist’s Download control. The label and placement can change with app updates.
- Wait for the download indicator to show that the tracks are stored for offline use.
- Before a trip, switch off Wi-Fi or mobile data briefly and play several tracks. This verifies that the files, not a live stream, are being used.
- Reconnect to the internet at least once during every 30-day period so the downloads remain active.
If you use multiple phones, tablets, or computers, count them against the device allowance shown for your plan and region. Do not treat the US limit as universal.

- Open the album, playlist, or individual release you want in YouTube Music.
- Select the Download control and let the app finish saving the material.
- Find the saved items in the app’s downloads or library area and test playback with connectivity disabled.
- Reconnect at least once every 30 days.
- Recheck important albums before travel. A creator’s rights change or a restriction can make previously downloaded content unavailable.
Because YouTube Music can surface videos, remixes, and covers, verify exactly what was downloaded. A saved video is not necessarily the official soundtrack album you intended to archive for a flight or commute.

Background playback, ads, and listening while multitasking
YouTube Music Premium explicitly supports uninterrupted music and podcasts while you use other apps or when the screen is off. Its Premium benefits also include ad-free music, audio-only playback, and downloads, although Google notes that the experience can vary by region.
The available Spotify documentation establishes Premium downloads and lossless streaming, but it does not provide a like-for-like statement here about every background-playback or advertising behavior. Check the current plan description for your country rather than assuming that another market’s rules apply.
For a listener who uses a phone as a dedicated music player, screen-off playback may be decisive. For someone who mainly listens at a desk or through a console setup, the exact soundtrack match can matter more than this distinction.
Audio quality: what is known and what is not
Spotify currently advertises lossless streaming up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC for most of its catalog. “Most” matters: the format depends on the particular release, and a game soundtrack must actually be available in that quality for you to benefit.
The available official material does not establish a directly comparable current maximum for YouTube Music. It would therefore be inaccurate to declare a general sound-quality winner between the services.
Use this checklist when quality is important:
- Confirm that the exact soundtrack release, not merely the game title, is available.
- Check whether your subscription tier includes the advertised format.
- Use a device, app setting, connection, and playback chain that can handle the format.
- Compare the same master or edition when possible. A different remaster can sound unlike the same song on another service even if both are labeled lossless or high quality.
- Remember that a YouTube video, cover, or compressed upload is not automatically equivalent to an official album release.
Finding the right version on YouTube Music
YouTube Music is particularly useful when your preferred recording exists in several forms. Search results may include a full album, an individual track, a music video, an orchestral arrangement, a remix, a cover, or a long-form compilation. Use filters and the library to narrow the results, and Sound Search when you can identify a melody but not its title.

- Import Game - Japanese Version
- Compatible with US systems (region free)
- Japanese language (other languages may be included)
- Manual and packaging in Japanese language
That flexibility creates three common traps:
- Unofficial uploads: A video can be easy to play but lack clear rights or reliable metadata.
- Different edits: A video upload may use a shortened, looped, or otherwise altered version of a cue.
- Availability changes: A creator or rights holder can change access, which can affect downloads as well as streaming.
If continuity matters, save the official album or music release when one is available, then use videos and covers as supplementary versions rather than replacements.
Choosing by listener type
| Your priority | More suitable starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A specific Nintendo soundtrack that matches Spotify’s announced playlist | Spotify | Spotify has a dated official example covering Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2; verify the release in your country. |
| Hard-to-find arrangements, covers, or soundtrack videos | YouTube Music | YouTube Music exposes albums, videos, remixes, and covers in one ecosystem. |
| Reliable travel listening | Either, after testing | Both support paid offline downloads and require reconnection at least every 30 days. |
| A large, known offline library across several devices | Spotify, if its local plan matches your needs | The cited US page specifies up to 10,000 songs per device on up to five devices; confirm whether that applies to your market. |
| Screen-off listening while using other apps | YouTube Music Premium | Google explicitly documents background and screen-off playback for Premium members, subject to regional variation. |
| Lossless playback | Spotify, when the release and hardware qualify | Spotify advertises up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC for most of its catalog; no equivalent YouTube Music maximum is established here. |
The table is a starting framework, not a substitute for checking the games you actually play. A service that wins one row can still lose your decision if it lacks your favorite soundtrack.

It does not appear in search
Try the game’s full title, subtitle, composer, publisher, and “original soundtrack.” Check alternate spellings and regional titles. Search the sequel separately; rights are often handled release by release.
You find only a video or cover
Decide whether that version meets your needs. If you want the official album, inspect the uploader, album metadata, track list, and label information instead of treating any playable result as equivalent.
The result is visible but cannot play
Check your account country, plan eligibility, and whether the release is restricted in your region. Availability can differ between search visibility and playable access.

Reconnect the app to the internet, confirm that your paid membership is active, and test the release online. Spotify requires a reconnection at least every 30 days. YouTube Music also requires a 30-day reconnection cycle, and a creator or rights holder may have changed the content’s availability.
Best Value
The album is incomplete
Compare the track list with the edition you want. Look for deluxe, expanded, remastered, or regional releases, and check whether bonus cues were issued separately. Do not fill gaps with unrelated uploads unless you are comfortable with a mixed version.
Price and plan checks
A meaningful price comparison requires a country, currency, billing period, account type, and current offer. Matching prices were not established for a specified market here, so no universal “cheaper” claim is justified.
Before paying, verify:
- The current local price for Spotify Premium and YouTube Music Premium.
- Whether a trial or introductory offer applies to your account, and when it ends.
- Whether the plan includes downloads and the playback behavior you need.
- Any device, household, student, or family eligibility rules that affect your account.
- What happens to downloads and offline access after cancellation or failed billing.
Check these terms immediately before subscribing because prices, trials, regional availability, and plan benefits can change.
A practical decision procedure
- List your non-negotiable games. Include at least two or three titles, not just one favorite.
- Check both services using the same search terms. Record the exact album, video, edition, and country availability.
- Reject mismatches. Exclude fan uploads, covers, remixes, or incomplete compilations if you need the official score.
- Choose your playback requirement. Decide whether you need screen-off use, audio-only playback, offline travel listening, or the highest documented format.
- Compare the local paid plans. Apply the download and device rules to your own account, not a different country’s page.
- Test before travel. Download representative albums, disable connectivity, and play several tracks. Reconnect within the required 30-day window.
If both services pass the catalog test, choose based on the feature you will use every week: YouTube Music’s video-and-audio ecosystem, Spotify’s documented lossless option, or the offline limits and device behavior of the local plans.
Verdict
For video game soundtrack listeners, the decisive factor is not an abstract catalog ranking. Spotify has a confirmed official Nintendo game-music example and a published lossless specification, while YouTube Music offers a broad mix of albums, videos, remixes, covers, search tools, and Premium background playback. Both provide paid offline downloads with a 30-day reconnection requirement.
Search your own must-have games on both services, verify the exact official release in your country, and then select the plan whose offline, playback, and audio requirements fit your devices. That personal catalog check is more reliable than any blanket claim that Spotify or YouTube Music is best for every game soundtrack.
