Spotify’s desktop app can use device storage for cached audio and offline downloads, but that is different from the live RAM number shown by Task Manager or Activity Monitor. Spotify documents controls for clearing its cache, moving the cache, managing downloads, restarting and updating the app, and reinstalling it. Its published support pages do not define a normal desktop Spotify RAM range or identify a specific threshold at which usage is “too high.” Start by identifying which resource is actually under pressure, then apply the matching fix.

First, identify what “memory” means

People use “memory” for two separate resources. Confusing them can lead to the wrong fix.

What you are seeing Where it appears What it usually represents Relevant Spotify control
Storage space File Explorer, Finder, or Spotify’s Storage section Cached portions of music and podcasts plus downloaded tracks and episodes saved for offline playback Clear cache, change cache location, and remove downloads
Live process RAM Windows Task Manager or macOS Activity Monitor Memory currently assigned to the running Spotify processes, including the app interface and playback components Restarting, updating, closing other apps, and reinstalling may help; Spotify does not publish a normal range or guaranteed fix

Spotify’s support article “Spotify storage information” says the app uses device memory to cache parts of music and podcasts so playback can run without lag, and to store downloaded music and podcasts for offline listening. In that context, “memory” means available device capacity, principally storage. A large cache directory can therefore explain why a drive is filling up without proving that it is the cause of a high RAM reading.

If your operating system shows Spotify using several gigabytes in the Memory or RAM column, treat that as a process-performance problem. The official storage guidance does not provide a diagnosis, benchmark, or threshold for unusually high desktop process RAM.

Why Spotify uses storage space

Cached playback data

Spotify keeps portions of recently played music and podcasts in a cache. Caching reduces the need to fetch the same data repeatedly and can help playback start smoothly. The cache is disposable data: Spotify provides an in-app command to remove it and a control to choose another location.

Offline downloads

Tracks, albums, podcasts, and playlists marked for offline listening occupy storage separately from ordinary cache behavior. If the complaint is a nearly full SSD or a warning about low disk space, inspect downloaded content as well as the cache. Spotify’s storage guidance specifically notes that downloaded tracks may need to be removed when space is limited.

Why storage cleanup is not a RAM diagnosis

Deleting files from disk changes available storage. It does not establish why a running process has a high RAM reading, and it is not a guaranteed cure for every memory spike. Clear the cache when storage is the problem or as a controlled troubleshooting step; do not assume that cache size and live RAM are the same measurement.

What Spotify officially says about high desktop RAM

The Spotify support material available for desktop storage explains cache and downloads, while the general “Spotify not playing” troubleshooting page recommends restarting or updating the app, closing unused applications, checking available memory, clearing cache, and checking firewall access. Those recommendations are broad troubleshooting steps, not a published explanation of an individual Spotify process’s RAM use.

Spotify also recommends at least 1 GB of free memory in its offline-listening guidance. That figure is a device-availability recommendation for offline listening. It is not Spotify’s stated desktop process-RAM requirement, a maximum, or a promise that the app will remain below a particular number.

Because no official normal range is given, avoid judging the problem from a single screenshot. Record whether usage grows continuously, falls after a restart, coincides with playing a particular item, or occurs while the computer is low on total available RAM. These patterns help decide which next step is sensible without inventing a threshold Spotify has not published.

Check which resource is actually under pressure

On Windows

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On the Processes tab, locate Spotify and note the values under Memory and Disk. If Spotify is expanded into several processes, note the total effect rather than relying on one child process.
  3. Open the Performance tab and check overall memory use, available RAM, and disk capacity. A high Spotify percentage while plenty of RAM remains available is a different situation from system-wide memory exhaustion.
  4. After closing Spotify, wait briefly and confirm whether its processes disappear. A process that remains can justify an update, clean restart, or reinstall if normal quitting repeatedly fails.

On macOS

  1. Open Applications → Utilities → Activity Monitor.
  2. Use the Memory tab to find Spotify and observe its memory column, memory pressure graph, and swap use.
  3. Check the storage device separately in Finder or System Settings → General → Storage. A full drive and high memory pressure are separate findings.
  4. Quit Spotify normally, then verify that its processes close. Force quitting should be reserved for an app that will not exit normally.

Use the same observation after each change. If the number falls only because the app was restarted and then climbs steadily again, document that pattern for Spotify support rather than treating a one-time reduction as proof of a cause.

Fix Spotify desktop memory problems in order

1. Restart Spotify and the computer

Spotify’s general troubleshooting guidance places restarting among the first actions for playback and technical problems. Quit the app completely, not just the window, and reopen it. If the behavior returns immediately, restart the computer to clear other temporary processes and then test Spotify before launching a large collection of other applications.

A restart is a diagnostic as well as a fix: a temporary spike that disappears and does not return is different from usage that grows during an otherwise identical session.

2. Update the desktop app

Install any update offered by Spotify, then restart the app. Spotify lists updating as a general troubleshooting step and says reinstalling can help ensure the app is up to date when ordinary updating does not resolve a technical issue.

Do not infer that every update changes memory behavior. The useful test is whether the same activity still produces the same symptom after the update, with other variables kept similar.

3. Clear the in-app cache

On the desktop app, use this path:

  1. Select your profile picture.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Scroll to Storage.
  4. Select Clear cache.

The same Storage section offers Change location if you need cached data on another drive. Clearing removes cached data; it does not represent a published guarantee that high process RAM will stop. After clearing, restart Spotify and observe both disk usage and live RAM separately.

If the cache command is unavailable or the app cannot stay open long enough to use it, move to the restart, update, and reinstall steps rather than deleting arbitrary Spotify folders. Manual deletion can remove files that the application expects and makes it harder to tell what changed.

4. Manage offline downloads when storage is low

If the operating system reports low disk space, review downloaded music and podcasts and remove items you no longer need offline. Spotify distinguishes downloads from cache, so clearing the cache alone may not recover the space occupied by downloaded content.

Make this change only when the symptom is storage pressure. Removing downloads is not a substitute for investigating a high RAM reading in Task Manager or Activity Monitor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Close unused applications and check available memory

Spotify’s troubleshooting page recommends closing other unused apps and checking available memory. This reduces competition for RAM and shows whether the computer is generally constrained.

  • If total memory pressure is high across the system, close the largest unused applications before judging Spotify’s behavior.
  • If Spotify is the only process with unusual growth while the rest of the system is stable, record the time, playback action, and amount observed.
  • If available memory remains healthy but the drive is full, focus on cache and downloads instead of buying RAM or deleting unrelated system files.

Spotify does not document a requirement to purchase additional RAM for a particular desktop usage level. A hardware upgrade may help a computer that is routinely short of memory for many applications, but it is not an evidence-based Spotify-specific fix.

6. Check firewall access when playback or connectivity is also failing

The general Spotify troubleshooting guidance includes checking desktop firewall access. This step is relevant when high resource use appears alongside songs that will not start, repeated connection errors, or a client that cannot reach Spotify’s service. Firewall settings do not explain every RAM reading, but a blocked or repeatedly failing connection can make the overall symptom look like an app performance problem.

7. Compare with the web player

Open Spotify’s web player in a current, supported desktop browser and perform the same short playback test. Spotify maintains separate web-player help for supported desktop browsers and browser troubleshooting.

This comparison is a practical isolation step, not proof of a root cause. If the web player behaves normally while the desktop app repeatedly shows the symptom, the difference supports focusing on the installed app, its cache, or its local configuration. If both methods cause system-wide memory pressure, investigate the computer, browser extensions, other applications, and available resources as well.

8. Reinstall only after the earlier steps

Spotify says reinstalling can address common technical issues and ensure that the app is up to date. Use it when restarting, updating, cache management, and the web-player comparison have not resolved the problem.

Plan for the consequence before uninstalling: Spotify warns that downloaded music and podcasts must be downloaded again afterward. Reinstallation is therefore more disruptive than clearing cache and should not be the first response to a storage-only complaint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After reinstalling, test the app before restoring all offline downloads. That gives you a clean baseline. If the problem returns only after a particular download set or usage pattern, include that detail in a support report.

Use the symptom to choose the next branch

The drive is nearly full, but RAM is ordinary

Open Spotify’s Storage section, clear cache, and review offline downloads. Consider changing the cache location to a drive with sufficient capacity. Recheck free disk space after each action. Do not treat the available-storage result as a measurement of Spotify’s process RAM.

RAM is high immediately after launch

Restart the computer, update Spotify, and test before opening other demanding applications. If the reading remains unusually high, compare with the web player and then consider reinstalling. Spotify’s published pages do not establish a normal process-RAM threshold, so preserve the actual operating-system reading and circumstances for support.

RAM rises gradually during a session

Note how long the session runs, whether playback changes, and whether the number falls after a complete restart. Clear cache as a controlled test, but do not claim that the cache caused the growth unless independent evidence demonstrates that relationship. If the pattern persists after updating and reinstalling, submit the timeline and system details to Spotify support or its community.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The entire computer becomes sluggish

Check total memory pressure, swap or paging, disk capacity, and the largest processes. Close unused applications, then test Spotify alone. A computer that remains constrained with Spotify closed has a broader resource problem rather than a Spotify-only diagnosis.

Spotify will not play or connect

Restart and update the app, check available memory, and verify firewall access. Compare with the web player. If the issue continues, Spotify’s troubleshooting guidance points users toward known-issue resources, its support/community channels, and further device troubleshooting.

When to contact support

Contact Spotify support or the Spotify community when the symptom survives a restart, current software, cache management, and (if necessary) a reinstall. Include:

  • Your operating system and whether you use the desktop app or web player.
  • The exact operating-system memory reading and whether it is Spotify’s total or one child process.
  • Whether the problem is storage capacity, live RAM, or both.
  • Whether usage grows over time, appears immediately, or follows a particular playback action.
  • What happened after restarting, updating, clearing cache, comparing with the web player, and reinstalling.
  • Whether firewall or playback errors occur at the same time.

Spotify’s support material notes that further device troubleshooting may be needed and directs users to known-issue resources. A precise timeline is more useful than describing the app simply as “using too much memory,” because that phrase can refer to storage or RAM.

Important limits of the available guidance

Spotify’s published support pages explain why the app occupies storage and list general troubleshooting actions. They do not publish named causes for every desktop RAM spike, a benchmark for normal process usage, or a universal threshold that identifies a leak. They also do not establish that clearing cache will cure high live RAM.

That limitation does not make the steps above pointless. It means each step should be judged by the resource it addresses: cache and downloads for storage, and restart, update, isolation, and escalation for an unexplained process-reading problem. Keep those categories separate while testing, and avoid treating a hardware purchase, external drive, or third-party cleaning utility as a documented Spotify remedy.
