Short answer: Spotify Lossless preserves more of the recording than Very High, but it is not automatically more audible. Lossless is available at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC for Premium listeners, while Very High is approximately 320 kbit/s with lossy compression. Lossless can require several times more network capacity, and ordinary Bluetooth headphones still receive a compressed signal. For dependable lossless playback, use a current Spotify app, a stable Wi-Fi connection, and wired headphones, wired speakers, or a suitable non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect route.

Lossless and Very High at a glance

Factor Very High Lossless
Encoding Lossy compression FLAC that retains the encoded source data
Maximum quality listed by Spotify Approximately 320 kbit/s Up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz
Approximate stream data About 144 MB per hour, calculated from 320 kbit/s Spotify does not publish one fixed hourly figure; 1.5–2 Mbps recommended bandwidth equates to about 675–900 MB per hour if continuously sustained
Bluetooth Works, with the Bluetooth system applying its normal codec The signal is compressed before reaching ordinary Bluetooth headphones or speakers
Best connection for the selected quality Bluetooth, wired, Wi-Fi or cellular, depending on your limits Wi-Fi with wired audio, or a compatible non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect path
Availability Supported Spotify quality setting Premium feature on supported mobile, desktop and tablet apps and selected third-party Spotify Connect devices
Best fit Everyday listening, Bluetooth and data-conscious use Careful listening with a capable wired or networked system

The practical choice is therefore about the whole playback chain, not just the menu setting. Lossless is most useful when the recording, app, network and audio connection can all carry and reveal its additional information.

What Spotify’s two settings actually send

Very High: a 320-kbit/s lossy stream

Very High is Spotify’s highest conventional compressed setting and is listed at approximately 320 kbit/s. Lossy encoding removes information judged less important to human hearing so that the file or stream is smaller. It is not the same data as the source recording, but at this bitrate it can sound transparent to many listeners, especially in noisy surroundings or through modest hardware.

The 320-kbit/s figure is an approximate quality rating, not a guarantee that every track has identical file size. Container overhead, track encoding and network behavior affect the bytes transferred. It remains a useful planning number for data allowances.

Lossless: up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC

Lossless uses FLAC, a compression method that reduces size without discarding the encoded source data. Spotify lists the maximum as up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz. “Up to” matters: the service cannot restore detail that was absent from the supplied recording, and not every album necessarily has the same source resolution.

Lossless changes the ceiling of the digital file, not the laws of the rest of the system. A Bluetooth link can re-compress it, a device may not support the feature, and a speaker in a loud room may mask differences. Selecting Lossless is worthwhile only when those downstream limits are addressed.

What the specification does not promise

Neither setting guarantees a particular master, volume or artistic balance. Bit depth describes the resolution available for amplitude values, while sample rate describes how frequently the waveform is sampled; neither specification fixes the quality of microphones, mixing, mastering or your speakers. Spotify’s “up to” wording also means a 24-bit/44.1 kHz label is a maximum, not proof that every track in your library uses that exact format.

Lossless is not an automatic upscaler. A recording delivered from a lower-resolution or already processed source remains that source, simply without another lossy reduction at Spotify’s delivery stage. Very High, meanwhile, is not a low-quality mode: 320 kbit/s is the highest conventional compressed setting listed by Spotify and is an efficient choice for most mobile listening.

How much data each setting uses

Very High calculation

At 320,000 bits per second, one hour contains 320,000 × 3,600 bits. Dividing by eight gives 144,000,000 bytes, or approximately 144 MB per hour using decimal megabytes. This is a calculation from Spotify’s published bitrate, not a billing promise. Your actual mobile usage can vary with track encoding, buffering, artwork and other app traffic.

Lossless bandwidth estimate

Spotify recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps connection for the best Lossless experience. If a stream continuously consumed that entire range, the arithmetic is:

  • 1.5 Mbps × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 = approximately 675 MB per hour.
  • 2 Mbps × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 = approximately 900 MB per hour.

Those 675–900 MB figures are estimates derived from the recommended connection rate, not an official fixed Lossless consumption number. Actual usage depends on the track’s encoded data, buffering and network conditions. Spotify does not publish one guaranteed Lossless MB-per-hour value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Putting the estimates into a monthly plan

Ten one-hour listening sessions would represent roughly 1.44 GB at the 320-kbit/s planning rate. Using the recommended Lossless connection range as a continuous-use estimate, the same ten hours could represent about 6.75–9 GB. These are not invoices or guaranteed counters; they show why a capped cellular plan has a much smaller margin for Lossless.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Short sessions can still trigger buffering and artwork traffic, and a weak connection may repeatedly retry data. If you are close to a monthly allowance, set cellular streaming to Very High, reserve Lossless for Wi-Fi, and monitor your phone’s per-app data meter rather than relying only on theoretical arithmetic.

Downloads, storage and offline use

Downloaded music still occupies storage. The exact space per album is not stated by Spotify because it varies with duration and encoding. Lossless downloads will generally be larger than Very High downloads, so check available device storage before marking a large library for offline use.

Download quality is controlled separately from streaming quality. A home Wi-Fi preference does not have to force large Lossless files onto a phone; choose the download setting deliberately, download while connected to Wi-Fi, and remove albums you no longer need offline. If a device is nearly full, Very High downloads provide a practical compromise even when you use Lossless for a wired home system.

Why Bluetooth does not deliver end-to-end Lossless

The compression point

Spotify states that Bluetooth does not provide enough bandwidth for lossless transmission. When Lossless audio is sent to ordinary Bluetooth headphones or speakers, it is compressed for the Bluetooth link before playback. The app’s Lossless selection can therefore describe the stream arriving at the device, but not an untouched lossless signal at the headphone driver.

This is different from saying Bluetooth listening is poor. Modern Bluetooth systems can sound very good, and Very High is a sensible match for them. The limitation is specifically about preserving the lossless data all the way through the wireless connection.

Wired playback

A wired connection avoids the Bluetooth transmission step. Use headphones or speakers connected directly to the playback device, and make sure the phone, tablet or computer’s output path supports the signal. Built-in outputs, adapters and external digital-to-analog converters can have their own limits; Spotify’s lossless setting cannot make an incompatible output support a higher format.

A USB-C or Lightning adapter is part of that output path. Check that it is recognized by the device and that its specifications do not force an unexpected conversion. You do not need exotic equipment simply to try Lossless: ordinary wired headphones or speakers can be sufficient if the complete path accepts the stream and you listen in conditions where differences are audible.

Spotify Connect without Bluetooth

Spotify recommends a non-Bluetooth route such as Spotify Connect for a smooth lossless experience. A compatible Connect speaker, amplifier or streamer receives playback over the network rather than through the short-range Bluetooth audio link. Confirm that the specific third-party device supports Lossless; Connect availability alone does not establish that every model accepts it.

Connect also changes where playback is processed. The phone acts as a controller while the selected endpoint receives the stream, so the final endpoint’s firmware and network connection matter. If the endpoint is connected to Bluetooth speakers, the last Bluetooth leg still re-compresses the audio. For a genuine end-to-end test, keep the endpoint wired to headphones, an amplifier or speakers.

Requirements and compatibility

Subscription

Lossless is a Premium feature. A free account can use the quality options available to that account, but it does not unlock Spotify’s Lossless setting. No separate Lossless hardware is mandated; the requirement is a qualifying account plus supported software and a playback path that can use the format.

Supported app versions

Spotify’s support information lists these minimum versions for Lossless:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Mobile app: version 9.0.58 or later.
  • Desktop app: version 1.2.67 or later.

Lossless is also available in supported tablet apps. Update the app before troubleshooting audio quality; an older client may hide the setting or fail to apply it. If an update is not offered, the operating system or device itself may be outside the supported combination.

Supported playback devices

Spotify describes Lossless support across supported mobile, desktop and tablet apps, plus selected third-party Spotify Connect devices. “Selected” is important: device support is model- and firmware-dependent. A device that appears in the Connect picker is not automatically proven to accept the maximum Lossless format.

Before buying a streamer or speaker, check the manufacturer’s current specification and firmware notes for Spotify Lossless specifically, not merely Spotify Connect. A receiver can support Connect for ordinary quality while accepting a lower format for its internal processing. Updates can also change support, so verify compatibility again after a firmware or app change.

Network conditions

Spotify advises sufficient bandwidth and a stable Wi-Fi or mobile connection. Congestion, weak reception and interruptions can cause buffering or make playback fall back from the intended experience. Lossless does not require a special internet service, but the connection should comfortably sustain the recommended 1.5–2 Mbps while other household traffic is active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distance from the router, busy channels and simultaneous video calls can matter more than the headline speed of your broadband plan. Test near the intended listening position, and avoid judging the format during a moment when the network is already saturated.

Can you hear a difference?

The recording comes first

Lossless preserves the data Spotify received. If the original master was heavily limited, clipped or otherwise low quality, a larger delivery format cannot recreate missing dynamics or detail. Conversely, a well-recorded acoustic track may expose differences more readily than a dense, aggressively mastered track.

The playback chain sets the ceiling

To hear a meaningful distinction, the chain must avoid another lossy stage and reproduce the relevant frequency and dynamic information. Wired headphones or speakers, a suitable output and a quiet listening position give Lossless its best chance. Bluetooth introduces compression; inexpensive transducers may blur small differences; and device processing can alter the signal regardless of the selected Spotify setting.

Your environment and hearing matter

Background noise, listening volume, age-related hearing changes and individual preference all affect audibility. Some listeners will identify a difference in a careful comparison, while others will not reliably distinguish the settings. Spotify’s own guidance ties the result to the original recording and compatible devices, so no universal audible improvement should be promised.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A fair comparison uses the same master, output, volume and listening position. Switching between different albums or allowing one setting to play louder can create a perceived improvement that comes from level or content rather than encoding. Lossless is best viewed as preserving optionality for a capable system, not as a guarantee of a dramatic upgrade.

How to configure Spotify for the right connection

1. Update and verify your account

  1. Install the latest Spotify mobile, desktop or tablet app. If you are checking minimum support, use mobile 9.0.58 or later and desktop 1.2.67 or later.
  2. Sign in to a Premium account.
  3. Start playback of a track and confirm that the output device is the one you intend to test.

2. Set each network type separately

  1. Open Spotify’s Settings.
  2. Open Media Quality.
  3. Choose the Lossless option for Wi-Fi if you want it at home or on another trusted network.
  4. Set the cellular/mobile option separately. Choose Very High if your data allowance is limited or if you normally listen over Bluetooth.
  5. Set download quality independently. Use Wi-Fi for downloads when storage and cellular data are concerns.

The separate controls prevent a home listening preference from silently applying to cellular streaming or offline downloads.

3. Choose a connection that can preserve the setting

  1. For the strongest lossless test, connect wired headphones or wired speakers directly to the playback device or to a compatible wired output system.
  2. Alternatively, open the device picker and select a Spotify Connect endpoint that explicitly supports Lossless, without routing the final signal through Bluetooth.
  3. If your only option is Bluetooth, keep Lossless enabled only if you also value the source file or plan to switch later; the Bluetooth leg will still compress the signal.

4. Test under repeatable conditions

Use the same track, volume and output while switching settings. Listen in a quiet environment and allow playback to stabilize after each change. This does not guarantee that you will hear a difference, but it avoids attributing changes caused by volume, room noise or a different device.

Which setting fits common listening situations?

Situation Recommended setting Reason
Daily listening with Bluetooth earbuds Very High The Bluetooth connection will compress Lossless, while Very High already supplies a compact, high-bitrate stream.
Large cellular plan but Bluetooth output Usually Very High Extra source data does not remove the Bluetooth compression step.
Home listening with wired headphones and reliable Wi-Fi Lossless The network and wired path can retain more of the source data.
Network streamer or speaker using supported Spotify Connect Lossless, if the model supports it Connect avoids the ordinary Bluetooth bottleneck.
Limited mobile data Very High on cellular; Lossless on Wi-Fi if desired Quality controls can be separated by connection type.
Older app or unsupported device Update first; otherwise Very High Lossless requires supported software and hardware.
Large offline library on a small phone Very High downloads It reduces storage pressure while leaving Wi-Fi streaming preferences unchanged.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Potential costs and trade-offs

The main cost of choosing Lossless is not a published per-hour fee; it is bandwidth, storage and potentially the equipment needed to avoid Bluetooth. Premium access is required, but the specific subscription price depends on your market and plan and is not part of Spotify’s quality specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you already own wired headphones, speakers or a supported network endpoint, there may be no additional equipment purchase. If you listen only with Bluetooth earbuds, buying hardware solely for Lossless is optional rather than mandatory: Very High remains the practical choice for that setup. Consider the price of storage, cellular overage risk and a wired adapter before treating the format as an upgrade worth paying for.

Troubleshooting Lossless playback

The Lossless option is missing

  • Confirm that the account is Premium.
  • Update the mobile app to at least 9.0.58 or the desktop app to at least 1.2.67.
  • Check whether the feature is available on the device and app combination you are using.
  • Sign out and back in after updating if the setting still does not appear.

Playback buffers or stops

  • Move to a stronger Wi-Fi signal or reduce competing network traffic.
  • Check that the connection can sustain Spotify’s recommended 1.5–2 Mbps while other devices are active.
  • Use Very High temporarily on a congested cellular connection.
  • Download tracks over Wi-Fi for offline playback if interruptions continue.

Lossless sounds no different over headphones

  • Check whether the headphones are connected by Bluetooth; that path compresses the signal.
  • Verify that the wired adapter, DAC or speaker accepts the output you are sending.
  • Try a well-recorded track in a quiet room at matched volume.
  • Accept that the original recording, playback hardware and your hearing may make the difference inaudible.

Data use is higher than expected

  • Review the cellular setting in Settings > Media Quality; Wi-Fi and cellular choices are independent.
  • Check whether high-quality downloads are enabled and occupying storage or consuming cellular data.
  • Remember that the 675–900 MB-per-hour Lossless figure is a bandwidth-based estimate, not a fixed meter reading.
  • Check your device’s background-data and automatic-download settings if usage continues while you are not actively listening.

Bottom-line decision

Use Very High when you listen mainly over Bluetooth, need to conserve cellular data or use hardware that cannot accept a wired or supported Spotify Connect signal. Choose Lossless when you have Premium, a supported app and device, stable Wi-Fi, and a wired or non-Bluetooth playback path. The upgrade preserves more source data, but the audible benefit depends on the recording and the entire listening chain rather than the setting alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Spotify Lossless worth it over Very High?

It is worthwhile when you have Premium, stable Wi-Fi and wired or supported non-Bluetooth playback. Lossless preserves up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC source data, but the audible improvement varies with the recording, hardware, room and listener. For ordinary Bluetooth listening, Very High is usually the more efficient choice.

How much data does Spotify Lossless use per hour?

Spotify does not publish one fixed hourly consumption figure. Its recommended 1.5–2 Mbps connection equates to roughly 675–900 MB per hour if sustained continuously. That is an estimate; actual usage varies with encoding, buffering and network behavior. Very High calculates to about 144 MB per hour from 320 kbit/s.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I hear Spotify Lossless over Bluetooth?

You can select Lossless while using Bluetooth, but Spotify says Bluetooth lacks enough bandwidth for lossless transmission. The signal is compressed before reaching ordinary Bluetooth headphones or speakers, so playback is not end-to-end lossless. Use wired audio or a compatible non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect path instead.

What headphones do I need for Spotify Lossless?

Use wired headphones connected through a compatible device or adapter, or use speakers fed by a wired output. You do not need a particular brand, but the phone, computer, adapter or DAC must support the output path. Bluetooth headphones cannot preserve the lossless signal through their wireless link.

Which Spotify app versions support Lossless?

Spotify lists mobile app version 9.0.58 or later and desktop app version 1.2.67 or later. Lossless is also available in supported tablet apps and selected third-party Spotify Connect devices. Update the app and check the specific device model and firmware when the setting is missing.

Does Spotify Connect deliver Lossless?

Spotify recommends a non-Bluetooth route such as Spotify Connect for a smooth lossless experience, but support is device-specific. Confirm that the exact speaker, amplifier or streamer explicitly supports Lossless. If that endpoint then sends audio to Bluetooth speakers, the final wireless leg still compresses it.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Will Lossless make every song sound better?

No. Lossless retains the data Spotify received, but it cannot improve a poor or heavily limited master. Background noise, hearing, speaker quality and device processing also affect audibility. Some listeners hear a difference in careful conditions; others do not reliably distinguish it.

Should I use Lossless on cellular data?

Usually only if you have ample data and a stable connection. Lossless can consume several times more data than Very High, so set cellular quality independently from Wi-Fi and download quality. Very High is safer for capped plans, while Lossless can remain enabled for home Wi-Fi.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose Lossless for Premium listening over stable Wi-Fi with wired or explicitly compatible Spotify Connect equipment. Choose Very High for Bluetooth, limited data, smaller downloads or unsupported hardware. Lossless preserves more source information, but it cannot overcome Bluetooth compression, a weak network or limitations in the recording and playback system.
