Yes—Spotify can fade between songs with Crossfade, which overlaps the end of one track with the start of the next. Spotify lists Crossfade as a Premium feature. You can also choose Automix for beat-matched transitions on select playlists, or gapless playback to remove pauses without overlapping tracks.
What Spotify’s song-transition settings do
| Setting | What you hear | Where it applies | Plan eligibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crossfade | The first song fades out as the next fades in, so the tracks overlap. | Consecutive tracks; choose the transition with the Crossfade slider. | Spotify lists it as a Premium feature. |
| Automix | Beat-matched, seamless transitions. | Select Spotify playlists; it also works in Shuffle. Spotify does not say it applies to every playlist. | Spotify lists it as a Premium feature. |
| Gapless playback | Removes gaps or pauses that may occur between tracks; it does not describe an overlap. | Track playback. | Spotify does not state a Premium-only requirement for this setting. |
These are separate controls: Crossfade creates an overlap, Automix makes supported transitions beat-matched, and gapless playback removes pauses. Spotify describes Crossfade as overlapping two tracks by fading out the first while fading in the next.
How to turn on Crossfade in Spotify
- On mobile or tablet: Tap your profile picture, open Settings and privacy, then select Playback.
- Under Track transitions, drag the Crossfade slider to set the transition.
- On desktop: Click your profile picture, open Settings, then select Playback.
- Turn on Crossfade songs and move the slider to adjust the transition.
Spotify’s instructions identify a slider but do not specify its numeric range, so use the control shown in your current app rather than relying on a particular duration.

How to use Automix or gapless playback
Open the same Playback settings described above. On mobile or tablet, Automix and gapless playback appear under Track transitions; on desktop, switch the corresponding options under that section. Choose Automix when you want beat-matched transitions on supported playlists, or gapless playback when you want to avoid pauses without intentionally overlapping songs.

Why a transition setting may be unavailable
Spotify says its transition features cannot be set while using Spotify Connect. If you cannot change Crossfade, Automix, or gapless playback, first check whether Spotify is currently being controlled through Connect. For Crossfade or Automix, also check that the account is Premium, since Spotify lists those two features as Premium features. Spotify does not specify the same plan restriction for gapless playback.

Audio quality
Audio-quality settings affect stream or download quality, not the fade between songs. The available quality choices depend on the device and plan. Spotify can adjust quality automatically, and its web player does not offer quality adjustment. See Spotify’s audio-quality guidance.
