Spot margin is a spot trade financed with a loan: you buy or sell the underlying asset, owe the borrowed principal, and usually pay interest until repayment. A perpetual future is a derivative with no fixed expiry; instead of borrowing the asset, you post collateral and exchange periodic funding payments with traders on the other side. Both can use leverage and both can be liquidated. Neither is universally cheaper or safer—the result depends on the venue, asset, leverage, position size, funding or borrow rate, and how long you hold the position.
The practical comparison is therefore an all-in calculation: entry and exit fees plus spot-margin interest, versus entry and exit fees plus expected perpetual funding, while checking each venue’s liquidation and deficit rules.
What spot margin actually is
A spot-margin position remains a transaction in the underlying spot market. To buy more than your cash allows, you borrow quote currency; to sell an asset you do not own, you borrow that asset and sell it. The borrowed balance is a liability that must be repaid, normally with interest.

How a margin long works
- You deposit collateral in a margin account.
- You borrow quote currency, such as dollars or a stablecoin, subject to the venue’s risk limits and interest rate.
- You buy the underlying asset in the spot market.
- When you close, you sell the asset, repay principal and accrued interest, and keep any remaining amount after trading costs.
How a margin short works
- You borrow the asset you intend to sell.
- You sell that borrowed asset in the spot market.
- To close, you buy the asset back and return the borrowed amount plus interest.
- If the asset price rises sharply, the repurchase can cost more than the sale proceeds, and the account can fall below its maintenance requirement.
Borrowing interest starts when funds are borrowed in the Binance margin explanation, and each successful margin trade also incurs a trading fee. The rate and accrual rules are venue- and asset-specific, not a market-wide schedule. Binance’s current margin FAQ describes dynamic hourly rates; for loans opened from April 30, 2026, it says the first charge is prorated from borrowing time to the next hourly settlement. That is a Binance rule, not a universal convention.

Accrued interest reduces account equity and can push a position toward liquidation even if the market price has not moved enough by itself to trigger concern. Check the current borrow-rate screen for the exact asset before opening a position; an old screenshot or rate quoted for another asset is not a reliable estimate.
What a perpetual future is
A perpetual future is a derivative position rather than ownership of the spot asset. Unlike a conventional futures contract, it has no scheduled expiry in the general crypto-perpetual model. A comment filing submitted to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission described the distinction this way: “The absence of an expiry date, however, means that perpetual derivatives fundamentally differ from derivatives contracts seen in traditional markets, in that there is no set date upon which a settlement price is determined and expiring positions are settled.” That filing is a submitted comment, not a binding CFTC rule.
You post collateral, choose a long or short position, and gain or lose according to the contract’s price. The contract uses a reference mechanism and funding transfers to keep its traded price near the underlying spot market.
How funding works
Funding is a transfer between long and short position holders, not a universal exchange commission. Under the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission framework, “A perpetual funding rate payment is a periodic payment exchanged between long and short position holders in a perpetual contract to keep the contract’s price aligned with the underlying asset’s spot market price.” A positive rate means longs pay shorts; a negative rate means shorts pay longs.
Coinbase International Exchange states its formula as Funding Fee = Position Value × Funding Rate. Its help material also explains that the amount depends on the difference between the perpetual and spot price and on position size. The interval, rate calculation, mark or index reference, and definition of position value vary by contract and venue.
You pay or receive funding only according to the venue’s rule for positions open at the relevant funding time. Opening immediately before or closing immediately after that time can therefore produce a different result from a position held over the same clock duration on another venue. Funding rates can change sign, so a position that receives funding in one interval may pay it in the next.

Fee comparison at a glance
| Cost item | Spot margin | Perpetual futures |
|---|---|---|
| Trading fees | Fees may apply to every executed spot-margin trade. Binance says each successful margin trade incurs a trading fee. | Opening and closing fees normally apply according to the contract, maker/taker status, and account tier. The reviewed official material does not establish one universal rate. |
| Holding cost | Interest on the borrowed asset or currency. Rates and accrual schedules can change and are asset-specific; Binance describes hourly accrual in its current FAQ. | Funding is paid or received at the contract’s settlement interval when the position is open, based on the funding rate and position value. |
| Direction of the cost | Interest is a borrowing cost while debt remains outstanding. | Funding can be a debit or a credit: positive funding generally charges longs, while negative funding generally charges shorts. |
| Other possible charges | Check the venue’s current borrowing, liquidation, conversion, and account rules. | Check contract-specific liquidation, settlement, collateral, conversion, and loss-allocation rules. |
Do not compare a published spot trading commission with a perpetual funding rate and call the lower number “cheaper.” They are different types of charges: one is usually an execution fee, while the other is financing that can reverse direction.

How to calculate an apples-to-apples cost
Use the same notional exposure, leverage, entry price, exit price assumption, and holding period for both products. Then record the venue and the date because borrow and funding rates change.
Spot-margin estimate
Estimate the borrowed amount, multiply it by the applicable interest rate for each accrual period, and add entry and exit trading fees. If the venue compounds or settles interest hourly, calculate each interval rather than applying a daily average blindly. Include any separate borrowing or liquidation charge stated in the venue rules.
A simplified expression is:
spot-margin cost = entry fee + exit fee + sum(borrowed balance × applicable interest rate × accrual fraction)
The borrowed balance can change when you repay part of the loan, add collateral, or trade again. For a short, the borrowed asset quantity may remain fixed while its value and required collateral move with the market.

perpetual cost = entry fee + exit fee + sum(position value at each interval × funding rate for that interval)
Use a range or scenario for funding rather than treating today’s rate as guaranteed. A positive rate produces a payment for longs and a receipt for shorts; a negative rate reverses that direction. The position value used by the venue may be mark-price based, so it can differ from the notional you used in a rough spreadsheet.
Why no universal break-even rate exists
A margin loan with a low hourly rate can become expensive over a long hold, while a perpetual with several funding debits can cost more over the same period. The reverse can also happen when funding is negative or near zero. Leverage does not by itself settle the comparison: two accounts with the same notional can have different collateral, liquidation buffers, and fees because of account tier or margin mode.
Liquidation and loss risks
Both products magnify exposure by allowing a trader to control a larger position with less posted capital. Both can force-close the position when equity falls below the venue’s maintenance requirement. Binance’s isolated-margin guide describes automatic closure at the applicable risk threshold, and the SFC framework treats margining and forced liquidation as defining risks of perpetual products.
Spot-margin risks
- Debt survives the trade’s price movement. Principal remains owed, and interest continues to accrue until repayment.
- Interest reduces the margin level. Even a flat market can become riskier as the loan balance grows.
- Borrowed-asset availability can change. A venue can alter limits or rates, which affects the cost of maintaining a short or leveraged long.
- Liquidation can occur before you can act. Fast volatility, gaps, or a thin order book may leave insufficient time to add collateral.
Perpetual-specific risks
- Funding can change or reverse. A position that was receiving funding can become a recurring debit.
- Mark and index design matters. Liquidation may use a mark or reference price rather than the last traded price.
- Maintenance thresholds vary. Higher position tiers may have different margin requirements.
- Loss allocation is venue-specific. Auto-deleveraging, insurance funds, settlement procedures, and other mechanisms determine how deficits are handled.
The SFC has warned that weak or opaque mechanisms can expose clients to unexpected losses or unfair liquidations, and calls for robust, transparent controls. That is a regulatory framework for Hong Kong platform offerings, not a statement that every venue uses the same controls.
Collateral, cross margin, and isolated margin
Cross margin generally allows a wider pool of account collateral to support a position. This can delay liquidation, but a losing position may consume balances that would otherwise remain outside the trade. Isolated margin generally ring-fences collateral for one position, limiting the amount assigned to that position under the venue’s terms. It does not guarantee that the loss is capped at the amount you initially intended: rules on fees, interest, liquidation execution, and deficits still apply.

Compare these settings separately for each product. Ask whether the venue accepts one asset as collateral for another, applies haircuts, allows unrealized profits to support new trades, and can use balances in other wallets. Never infer a maximum loss from the word “isolated” alone.

The possibility of a shortfall depends on the venue, legal entity, account agreement, and jurisdiction. Read those terms before assuming a forced close ends all obligations.
Which product fits which objective?
Choose spot margin when you need the underlying asset
Spot margin is the more direct structure when your objective includes receiving, transferring, or otherwise holding the actual asset after repaying the loan. It also makes the borrowing liability explicit, which can simplify a hedge involving a physical spot balance. The trade-off is ongoing interest and the operational need to monitor repayment and borrow availability.
Consider a perpetual when you need directional or hedging exposure
A perpetual can provide long or short exposure without borrowing the underlying coin. It may be operationally convenient for a hedge or for a strategy that does not require ownership. In return, you must understand funding, mark-price liquidation, contract specifications, and the venue’s treatment of collateral and deficits.
Use a neutral decision test
- Write the exact notional and intended holding period.
- Check the current borrow rate for the precise spot asset and the current funding history or estimate for the precise perpetual contract.
- Apply your maker or taker status and account tier to both entry and exit fees.
- Compare initial margin, maintenance margin, maximum leverage, and liquidation valuation.
- Check collateral haircuts, cross or isolated treatment, and whether balances elsewhere can be used.
- Confirm whether you need asset ownership, or only price exposure.
- Read the venue’s shortfall, insurance, auto-deleveraging, and jurisdiction disclosures.
The option with the lower modeled cost is not automatically preferable if its liquidation buffer is materially smaller or its legal and operational terms do not fit your use case.
Common misconceptions
“Funding is just the perpetual trading fee.”
No. Trading fees are charged for execution. Funding is a periodic transfer between long and short holders and can be either paid or received. A perpetual position can incur both.

“A margin short has no financing cost because I received sale proceeds.”
The borrowed asset still has to be returned, and interest can accrue on that loan. The sale proceeds do not cancel the liability.
“A perpetual has no expiry, so liquidation risk is lower.”
No-expiry design removes a scheduled settlement date; it does not remove maintenance-margin requirements, mark-price liquidation, funding, or venue loss-allocation rules.
“One quoted rate works for every platform.”
Borrow rates, funding intervals, position-value formulas, fee tiers, and liquidation procedures are venue- and contract-specific. Rates also change with market conditions.

What the official explanations establish—and what they do not
The Binance materials establish that margin borrowing creates interest and that its current rules use dynamic hourly accrual, including prorating the first charge to the next hourly settlement for new loans from April 30, 2026. They do not establish a market-wide borrowing rate.
Coinbase International Exchange establishes the position-value-times-rate funding formula for its product, while the Hong Kong SFC framework explains the long-pays-short and short-pays-long direction of funding. These descriptions do not create one universal interval or formula for every perpetual contract.
The SFC framework and VARA rules are jurisdiction-specific. The CFTC material cited above is a comment filing rather than a final agency rule. Treat each as context for understanding mechanics, then rely on the current agreement and risk disclosure for the venue available to you.
