Splinter Cell traditionally asks you to stay concealed by reading light and shadow, moving carefully, and planning an infiltration. But “modern stealth” is not one replacement formula: Hitman emphasizes disguise and social access, while Metal Gear Solid V is often characterized by its freedom to improvise. The difference is less “old stealth versus new stealth” than the kind of information each game asks you to manage—and the choices it gives you when a plan changes.
What is the central gameplay difference?
The original Splinter Cell makes concealment itself a primary problem to solve. You assess where you can move unseen, use darkness and cover, and bring reconnaissance tools to bear before committing to a route. The tension comes from controlling what enemies can perceive and avoiding exposure.
Other stealth games can shift the central problem. In Hitman, a disguise may let the player remain in plain sight while concealing their identity or purpose. In Metal Gear Solid V, GamesRadar’s 2026 overview describes a more free-form approach to player choice. Those are useful examples of different stealth designs, not definitions of every newer game.
That distinction matters because a game can reward stealth without relying on the same signals or tactics. Darkness, disguise, reconnaissance, route planning, and improvisation are separate design tools. A comparison is most useful when it asks which of those tools a particular game emphasizes, rather than assuming that all stealth games share one rule set.

How does light and darkness work in the original?
Dynamic lighting is one of the original Splinter Cell’s defining ideas. Ubisoft Toronto’s retrospective, “Celebrating 20 years of Splinter Cell,” explains that players could shoot out lights and use Sam Fisher’s night-vision goggles to navigate the darkness that resulted. Concealment is therefore not only about finding a shadow already present in the environment: the player can alter the environment to make a route safer.
This approach makes visibility a practical part of planning. A player can observe a lit area, consider whether it exposes Sam, and decide whether to move around it or change the conditions. Night vision then helps with movement through the dark. The distinctive loop is not simply “turn the lights off”; it is to read the space, create an opportunity, and use the available tools to exploit it.
That description applies to the original game’s signature lighting, not as a claim that every entry in the series uses an identical light meter or identical visibility rules. The series changed over time, and its later games gave players additional ways to move and act.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist shows why the series should not be reduced to slow movement in darkness. Ubisoft’s game page describes a broader set of movement and action options, alongside scouting and distraction tools. It released on August 20, 2013, for PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U, according to Ubisoft.
| Blacklist feature | What it adds to the stealth approach |
|---|---|
| Active Sprint | A faster traversal option, broadening how the player can move through an environment. |
| Climbing and vaulting | Ways to cross obstacles and make use of movement through the space. |
| Marked multi-target takedowns | A way to act against several marked enemies in a coordinated sequence. |
| Snake cam | A reconnaissance tool for scouting beyond the player’s immediate view. |
| Tri-rotor drone | A gadget that can scout, distract, and attack. |
The important contrast is not that one entry is “stealth” and another is “action.” Blacklist retains scouting and distraction while adding faster traversal and more direct actions. Its design gives stealth players more ways to manage a situation, rather than making the original’s light-and-darkness signature the only lens through which the series can be understood.

How do Hitman and Metal Gear Solid V differ from Splinter Cell?
Hitman: concealment through social access
GamesRadar’s 2026 feature characterizes Hitman 3 through social stealth and disguise. The basic contrast with the original Splinter Cell is that a player may be visible without being recognized as someone who should not be there. Concealment can involve managing identity and access, rather than relying chiefly on being physically hidden in darkness.
This does not mean visibility is irrelevant in Hitman, or that a disguise automatically makes every action safe. The supported comparison is about emphasis: disguise and social access provide a different way to conceal intent. It would be inaccurate to turn that into a claim about every detection rule or every situation in the game.

The same GamesRadar overview describes Metal Gear Solid V as supporting free-form player choice. That makes it a useful comparison for players who value improvisation: rather than treating one infiltration method as the defining answer, the game is presented as allowing different ways to approach stealth.
This is an editorial characterization of a released game, not a measured comparison of its systems against Splinter Cell. It also differs in kind from Ubisoft’s stated plan for the Splinter Cell remake, which was to retain a linear structure. One is a description of a released game’s approach; the other is a development goal for a project whose final mechanics are not established here.
Why “modern stealth” is not one category of mechanics
These examples show why broad claims such as “modern stealth is more open” or “new stealth games abandoned darkness” are too sweeping. The cited examples point to different emphases: disguise and social access in Hitman 3, free-form choices in Metal Gear Solid V, and expanded traversal and gadgets in Blacklist. They do not establish a genre-wide trend or prove that each game handles stealth in the same way.

What happens when a guard detects you?
Detection and recovery are important comparison points, but the available game-specific material does not establish a full, entry-by-entry account of alert escalation, enemy search behavior, or fail states. GamesRadar’s examples describe disguise and improvisation; they do not specify the detection algorithms. Ubisoft’s pages describe Blacklist features, not a complete account of how every encounter responds to exposure.
Recommended Free Tools
For that reason, it is not responsible to label one of these games “forgiving” or “punishing” based on this comparison alone. If detection behavior is central to your choice, assess the specific entry you intend to play and distinguish what the game explicitly communicates from assumptions based on the series name. A useful checklist is:
- Does the game make concealment legible through light, disguise, or another system?
- What information does it give you before you enter a risky space?
- Can you adapt with a gadget, a different route, or a different tactic?
- What precisely happens after exposure in the specific game and encounter?
The first three questions can help identify a game’s emphasis. The fourth requires evidence about that game’s actual rules; it should not be answered by generalizing from another entry or another series.
Are gadgets and reconnaissance used differently?
In the comparison supported here, Splinter Cell’s tools help the player prepare and control an infiltration. The original’s night-vision goggles support movement in darkness. In Blacklist, the snake cam and tri-rotor drone add scouting and distraction, with the drone also able to attack. Those tools connect information gathering to the player’s next decision: where to go, what to distract, or how to act.
The useful contrast with the examples from other series is not that they lack gadgets; the available material does not establish that. Rather, Hitman is being contrasted through disguise and social access, while Metal Gear Solid V is described in terms of player choice. Those are different ways to frame what the player manages, and they should not be mistaken for exhaustive inventories of either game’s tools.

When choosing a game, ask whether you most enjoy scouting a space before moving, changing visibility conditions, using a disguise to pass through social spaces, or experimenting with different approaches. That is more reliable than asking whether a game is “gadget-heavy” without naming which tools or decisions matter to you.
How much do movement and combat change the feel?
Movement changes the pace and the set of available routes. The original is associated with deliberate concealment and reconnaissance; Blacklist adds Active Sprint, climbing, and leaps over obstacles. It also includes marked multi-enemy takedowns. Together, these documented features make the later game’s movement and action options broader than a picture of stealth based only on cautious movement would suggest.
That does not establish that combat is mandatory, or that every Splinter Cell entry treats combat the same way. Ubisoft Toronto’s anniversary retrospective quotes Creative Director Chris Auty describing the original stealth fantasy as “The idea that you’re not just going around shooting every enemy you face, leaving a ton of bodies around.” The point of that statement is the intended fantasy of the original, not a universal mechanical rule for every installment.
Likewise, the examples here do not support reducing modern stealth to “more action.” Blacklist is a named example with specific movement and takedown features; Hitman 3 and Metal Gear Solid V are described through other emphases. Consider the individual game’s documented options instead of inferring its entire combat design from its age or genre label.
Are the missions linear or open-ended?
Mission structure is another meaningful axis, but the evidence needs careful framing. Ubisoft’s 2021 announcement, “Splinter Cell Remake Begins Development at Ubisoft Toronto,” said the planned remake would keep a linear structure rather than become open world, while updating presentation and design for modern expectations. That is a stated development goal, not proof of shipped content or confirmation of final mechanics.

By contrast, GamesRadar’s 2026 overview characterizes Metal Gear Solid V as free-form. These descriptions help explain the contrast a player may be seeking—directed, linear progression versus a more open-ended feel—but they are not the results of a controlled, like-for-like level-design test. They also refer to different things: a plan for a remake and an editorial characterization of a released game.
For a player deciding what kind of experience they want, “linear or open?” is a useful first question, but it does not answer how many choices a particular mission offers. A linear structure can still provide options within a level, and the sources cited here do not establish the precise level-by-level layout of the planned remake.
What is known about the Splinter Cell remake?
Ubisoft announced the remake in 2021 and described it as being in its earliest stages. The announcement set out intentions to preserve the early games’ spirit and linear structure while modernizing design and visuals. Ubisoft Toronto’s 2022 anniversary retrospective discussed planned work on AI engagement, lighting, animation, and audio, and reported that the team wanted the remake to support a no-kill playthrough.
Those statements are development aims, not a feature list confirmed for a finished release. Ubisoft Toronto’s current project page identifies the studio as lead developer and says the game is being rebuilt in Snowdrop, but it does not give a release date. There is therefore no date to report here, and the stated goals should not be presented as mechanics players can already expect with certainty.
In the anniversary feature, Creative Director Chris Auty summarized the ambition this way: “With this remake, we are building a solid base for the future of Splinter Cell.” That statement describes the team’s intention; it does not settle how the final game will handle every system discussed above.
Which approach should you choose?
Choose based on the kind of problem you want stealth to present, not on an assumption that one approach is newer or better. These questions map the comparison to a player’s preferences:
- Do you want concealment to be visibly tied to light and darkness? The original Splinter Cell is the clearest example here: lighting is a defining feature, and players can shoot out lights and use night vision.
- Do you prefer a disguise and social-access emphasis? GamesRadar’s 2026 description makes Hitman 3 the named example in this comparison.
- Do you want to prioritize flexible, improvised choices? GamesRadar characterizes Metal Gear Solid V as free-form.
- Do you want the Splinter Cell setting with more documented traversal and gadget options? Blacklist adds Active Sprint, climbing, vaulting, marked takedowns, a snake cam, and a tri-rotor drone.
- Is the remake’s promised direction what interests you? Treat linearity, modernization, and no-kill support as stated development aims, not confirmed final features.
For a quick comparison, assess each game separately across visibility, reconnaissance, movement, detection recovery, mission structure, and combat options. The first three have concrete examples above; detection recovery in particular should be checked against the specific game rather than inferred from broad genre descriptions.

What to know about Blacklist’s online features
Ubisoft’s Blacklist page currently warns that its online features are unsupported and that multiplayer and co-op are no longer functional. The game’s release on PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U is a historical platform listing, not an assurance that every platform’s online services remain available. A comparison of its stealth mechanics should not imply that its multiplayer or co-op can currently be played.
