Splashtop Shield pairs antivirus protection with a way to help relatives manage and troubleshoot their computers remotely. But in PCMag reviewer Neil J. Rubenking’s hands-on tests, protection results were mixed: Shield scored 7.8 out of 10 in a local malware test, missed every hand-modified sample, and blocked malware downloads only after they began. Families considering it should weigh that record against its consent-based remote-help feature—and note that major antivirus labs had not tested Shield when the review was published.
What Splashtop Shield does
Shield combines antivirus software with centralized family management. A designated Family Guardian uses an online console to manage settings and can connect to a relative’s computer to provide remote help. That makes it more than a way to check antivirus status: with the family member’s approval, the Guardian can operate the computer broadly.
PCMag’s Neil J. Rubenking described the product and its protection tests in a review published August 23, 2026. The review’s results are one reviewer’s findings from particular tests and sample sets, not independent antivirus-lab scores or a guarantee of how Shield will perform on every computer. Read the PCMag review syndicated by Yahoo Tech.
How well did Shield protect against threats?
Rubenking reported different results across local malware, malware-hosting downloads, and phishing tests. These tests measure different behaviors, so their percentages should not be combined into one overall detection rate.

| Test | PCMag reviewer’s result | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Local malware samples | 7.8 out of 10; Shield caught three-quarters of the samples on sight. | The score reflects the reviewer’s local sample test, not a lab certification. |
| Hand-modified malware samples | Shield recognized none of the samples, including modified ransomware samples. | The review found a clear weakness against the altered samples it tested. |
| Malware-hosting downloads | 86% across 100 verified samples supplied by MRG-Effitas. | Shield did not block access to any tested malware-hosting URL; the downloads were deleted after initiation. |
| Phishing attempts | 99% of verified fraud attempts detected. | Shield displayed a warning page in the reviewer’s phishing test. |
The malware-download result needs particular care: an 86% block rate might sound like Shield stopped users from reaching dangerous sites, but the review says it blocked none of the tested URLs. Instead, it removed the downloads after they started. That is a different protection point in the sequence than preventing access to the site itself.
At the time of publication, the major antivirus labs Rubenking followed had not tested Shield. The figures above therefore describe his review’s methods and results only; they do not establish a broad, independently replicated detection rate.

How family remote help works—and what access it allows
The Guardian manages settings in an online console. The family member installs Splashtop Streamer and the Shield antivirus application on the computer to be supported. When the Guardian begins a remote-help session, the family member must approve it, can see what is happening, and can end the session.
Approval is an important control, but it does not limit the Guardian to antivirus settings once connected. Rubenking reports that the Guardian can open Shield, inspect logs and quarantined items, run scans, access documents, launch other applications, and reboot the computer. Families should use the feature only with a trusted helper and agree in advance on what the helper should do during a session.

The Guardian’s computer also needs a separate Splashtop Remote Help client, installed on first use. Rubenking’s initial attempt to connect to a virtual machine failed; after working with Splashtop support, he connected successfully to a support contact’s laptop. That account describes the reviewer’s setup experience, not evidence of a general compatibility problem.

Is Shield a good choice for family computer support?
Its most distinctive benefit is the combination of antivirus management with hands-on remote control. The review notes that Sophos Home Premium also lets a user manage antivirus protection remotely for up to 10 household members, while Shield extends the concept to full computer control. That is a feature distinction, not evidence that either product has better malware protection; the review does not provide a head-to-head protection test.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Rubenking recommended holding off while Shield matured, citing the product’s newness and the lack of testing by the major labs he followed. The mixed findings in his own tests—especially the failure to recognize hand-modified samples and the lack of URL blocking—give cautious buyers concrete reasons to wait for further independent testing. If remote assistance is the priority, Shield’s approval-based workflow may be useful, but that convenience should not be mistaken for proof of stronger antivirus protection.
