Turn your Mac off now, disconnect its charger and other cables, and do not try to turn it back on. Blot liquid from the outside with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. If liquid may have reached the inside, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for service guidance; drying the exterior cannot make internal exposure safe.
What to do right after a spill
- Shut down and disconnect power. If the Mac is on, shut it down immediately. Unplug the charger and any connected cables or accessories if you can do so safely. Do not reconnect power or keep attempting to start the computer. Apple directs users to seek service if a Mac comes into contact with liquid: Apple’s Mac safety guidance.
- Blot visible liquid from the exterior. Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth on the keyboard, trackpad, and other accessible surfaces. Do not push the cloth or anything else into ports or openings. This removes only liquid you can reach on the outside; it does not dry the inside of the Mac.
- Arrange service if liquid may have entered the enclosure. Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Do not rely on a fixed waiting period as proof that a Mac exposed internally is safe to power on.
What not to do
- Do not use an external heat source or compressed air to dry the Mac.
- Do not put the Mac in rice.
- Do not insert objects into ports or openings to absorb liquid or clear debris.
- Do not charge or power on a Mac that may still be wet inside.
Apple lists these cautions in its liquid-detection alert guidance. Sticky or sugary liquid is also a reason to seek professional inspection rather than treating the spill like clean water; residue can remain even after the visible moisture is gone.
If you see a USB-C liquid-detection alert
Apple has a specific drying procedure for liquid detected in a USB-C port, cable, or accessory on supported MacBook Neo and specified newer MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with listed M3, M4, or M5 family chips running macOS Sequoia or later. It is not a general rule for a spill that may have reached the computer’s interior.

- Disconnect the cable at both ends and leave it disconnected.
- Wait at least a day, then visually check the USB-C port. Retry the connection only if the port appears dry.
- If the alert returns, shut down the Mac and leave it in a dry area with airflow for another day before trying again.
Charging while a port, cable, or accessory is wet can corrode connector pins or cause lasting connectivity problems, according to Apple’s alert instructions. That port-specific guidance does not establish that a Mac exposed to liquid internally is safe after 24 hours.
Choosing a service route and checking coverage
Apple says liquid damage is not covered by its limited warranty or AppleCare Protection Plans, while noting that consumer-law rights may apply. US AppleCare+ for Mac terms separately describe eligible accidental-damage claims that may include liquid spills; Apple decides whether to repair or replace the device, and a service fee applies. Coverage and terms depend on the country and plan, so check the terms that apply to your Mac rather than assuming standard warranty and AppleCare+ work the same way. Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider is Apple’s stated service route after liquid contact. A qualified independent Mac repair provider may also be an option. When comparing routes, ask whether the provider can inspect your exact model, request a written estimate, and understand how the provider handles your data. No universal repair price, turnaround, or recovery outcome can be assumed.

Whether repair is possible, what it may cost, and whether data can be recovered cannot be determined from the spill alone. The Mac’s model, how much liquid spilled, where it entered, whether the computer was powered, how quickly it is inspected, and whether you have a backup all matter. Keep it off and get case-specific guidance rather than testing it with another startup attempt.
