Unplug the laptop, shut it down immediately, and do not turn it back on to test it. Blot visible liquid from the outside with a soft, lint-free cloth, keeping liquid and cloth away from openings. If Coke may have entered the keyboard, ports, or chassis, keep the laptop disconnected and arrange a qualified repair assessment; a dry-looking exterior is not an all-clear.
What to do immediately
- Disconnect power and accessories. Unplug the charger and remove attached peripherals. If a cable or accessory is wet, do not reconnect or charge it.
- Shut the laptop down as soon as you safely can. Apple’s guidance for a wet Mac is to “Immediately shut down your Mac and disconnect from all power sources.” The device brand here is unknown, so consult its manufacturer’s guidance as well.
- Blot the outside gently. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to absorb visible liquid. Do not rub liquid toward openings or push the cloth into ports, the keyboard, or other gaps. Apple’s cleaning guidance concerns exterior surfaces; it does not instruct users to pour cleaner into a keyboard or clean a laptop’s interior.
- Leave it disconnected. Do not switch it on to check whether it still works, connect a charger, or plug in a wet accessory.
What not to do while it is wet
- Do not use an external heat source or compressed air.
- Do not put the laptop in rice.
- Do not insert a cotton swab, paper towel, or other object into a port.
- Do not assume that surface cleaning or drying has removed liquid from inside the device.
Apple specifically warns against heat, compressed air, rice, and inserting foreign objects when dealing with moisture in a Mac’s USB-C port. These cautions do not amount to a Coke-spill cleaning procedure for other parts of a laptop.
When to seek repair
Liquid may have reached the inside
If Coke may have entered the keyboard, a port, or the chassis, keep the laptop off and disconnected and arrange an assessment by the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. Apple recommends seeking help from an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store as soon as possible if liquid makes its way inside an Apple product. Owners of other brands should check their manufacturer’s instructions or contact a qualified repair provider.

Do not use a drying interval as a safety test
For moisture detected in a USB-C connector, Apple advises leaving a Mac disconnected for at least a day before visually checking whether the port is dry; if the alert returns, it advises leaving the Mac in a dry area with airflow for another day before checking again. That is connector-specific guidance, not a safe waiting period or all-clear for a Coke spill that may have reached internal components. If internal exposure is plausible, arrange an assessment rather than relying on elapsed time or a dry exterior.

Ask what the assessment includes
Before approving service, ask whether the provider has experience with your laptop’s make and model, whether the work includes internal inspection and residue cleaning, how long it may take, what the diagnostic fee is, whether repairs carry a warranty, how your data will be handled, and what the total estimate covers. These are questions to ask; the services and terms vary by provider.
Warranty and model-specific limits
Coverage depends on the manufacturer, plan, region, and applicable consumer law. Apple says liquid damage is not covered by its one-year limited warranty or AppleCare Protection Plan. AppleCare for Mac includes accidental-damage protection subject to a service fee and exclusions. Check the terms for your specific device and plan rather than assuming the spill is covered.

No laptop make or model is specified here, so there is no reliable universal instruction for opening the case, disconnecting an internal battery, or cleaning components. Do not disassemble the laptop unless you are following the exact manufacturer repair manual and have the required competence. Apple’s safety guidance reserves built-in battery service for trained technicians or work done according to its repair manual.
