Spider silk absorbs water into its protein fiber, and that uptake can make the fiber swell, soften, twist, or shorten. The shortening is called supercontraction: water changes the molecular interactions that help keep silk’s protein chains aligned, allowing them to rearrange. Whether the fiber actually contracts depends in part on whether it is free to move or held at a fixed length.
What it means for spider silk to soak up water
Here, “soak up” means water diffuses into the silk’s protein network; it is not just liquid resting on the fiber’s surface. As humidity rises, water enters the fiber, affecting its mass and dimensions as well as its mechanical behavior. Silk can become softer, swell, shorten, and—in some cases—twist.
Why water can make silk shrink even as it swells
Water uptake produces effects that can pull in opposite directions. Swelling tends to expand the fiber. At the same time, water can disrupt intermolecular hydrogen bonds, the interactions that help maintain the proteins’ organization. A proposed model is that this disruption lets some chain segments lose alignment and behave more like a rubber. The fiber then tends to contract; when that tendency outweighs swelling, an unconstrained fiber gets shorter.

A 2021 model describes hydrogen-bond dissociation and swelling as central effects of higher relative humidity. A 2022 model describes a water-driven transition from glassy to rubbery behavior and includes changes such as twist. Experiments on defined biomimetic fibers also found an important role for tyrosine in amorphous regions, alongside proline; that result should not be treated as a full account of the chemistry of native spider silk.

What supercontraction looks like in a free or restrained fiber
When the fiber can move
A fiber free to shorten can contract as it hydrates. This humidity-driven shortening is supercontraction. Published descriptions report large upper values, but they are conditional rather than typical: Cohen and coauthors’ 2021 paper describes a decrease in length of up to about 60% at high humidity, while Blackledge and coauthors’ 2009 paper describes unrestrained dragline silk reaching up to 50% of its original length.
When the fiber is held at length
If a fiber is restrained, it cannot express its contraction as a shorter length. Instead, hydration generates stress against the restraint. Blackledge and coauthors reported supercontraction stresses from 10 to 140 MPa across tested conditions, with higher stress typically associated with faster increases in humidity. Those values describe that study’s conditions, not a universal stress range for all spider silk.

Why humidity level and hydration history matter
There is no single universal humidity threshold established by these results. In one 2009 experiment, substantial stress was reported above approximately 70% relative humidity. The same study found that the response depended on how quickly humidity increased: faster hydration typically produced higher restrained-fiber stress, while slower hydration was associated with less water uptake. The reported 70% level is therefore a result from a particular experiment, not a fixed onset point for every silk type or setup.

Changing any of these conditions can change the observed length, stress, or water uptake.

Does spider silk return to its original state when it dries?
Not necessarily. Some wetting-and-drying cycles are reversible, but supercontraction can leave persistent changes. Blackledge and coauthors reported an approximately 1% residual mass increase after supercontraction followed by drying, based on a study-specific thermogravimetric measurement. That result is distinct from reversible cyclic wetting and drying; it does not establish that all silk retains extra mass or that drying always restores the original state.
