The reliable way to beat Sphinx is to treat the fight as two different encounters. In the opening stage, watch the telegraph, wait until the attack is committed, then take a short punish. When Sphinx becomes enraged, abandon the opening rhythm: keep moving, preserve stamina for real unblockables and escapes, and punish only after you have confirmed the new timing. No published source establishes frame-perfect dodge windows, damage values, a complete move list or a Sphinx-specific weakness, so any guide promising exact numbers is presenting unverified information.

What is known about the Sphinx encounter

Sphinx, Devourer of the Unworthy is described in secondary coverage and preview footage as a four-legged boss wearing a golden headpiece. Those reports place the battle in Chapter 4, after a cart ride through a dark mine. The chapter placement and visual description are useful orientation, but they are not backed by an official boss list; the developer had not published one in the material available for this guide.

The same coverage describes a readable first stage followed by an erratic, enraged second stage. That change of pace is the encounter’s defining test. You are not meant to memorize one loop and repeat it until the health bar disappears. You learn the initial telegraph, collect safe openings, then reassess spacing and timing when the boss changes behavior.

Valor Mortis is a first-person Soulslike. Its general combat rules matter here: blocking consumes a small amount of health, dodging is the response to attacks that are unblockable, and a correctly timed parry can create devastating damage. William also carries a flintlock pistol that can stagger enemies through weak points, but ammunition is scarce. Transmutations and Catalysts provide additional ways to shape a build, including upgrades to statistics, stamina and health. These systems help you prepare for Sphinx; they do not prove that Sphinx has a particular weakness or that every attack can be parried.

What you should not assume about timing

There is no published Sphinx data set that establishes startup frames, active frames, recovery frames, hitbox dimensions, a guaranteed invulnerability-frame count, phase-health thresholds, damage values or a complete attack list. The available material therefore supports timing principles rather than a frame chart.

  • Use the animation and sound to identify when an attack has actually committed, not an imagined fixed number of frames.
  • Do not label an attack parryable or unblockable solely because it resembles another enemy’s move. Confirm its behavior in your own attempts.
  • Treat any phase percentage, exact dodge direction, named weakness or guaranteed stagger as unverified unless it is demonstrated by an official guide or launch footage.
  • Expect equipment, difficulty, patches and camera position to affect how a timing feels even when the underlying move is unchanged.

This limitation does not make the fight unknowable. It changes the method: read the commitment, dodge the danger signaled by the move, and use the recovery animation as your punish signal.

Prepare before entering Chapter 4’s mine route

Make stamina a survival resource

Plan your loadout and Catalyst choices around having stamina available after the first evasive action. The encounter punishes a sequence of panic rolls more than a single late decision: if the first dodge was unnecessary, the next committed attack can catch you while your resource is recovering. A stamina or health improvement can therefore be more valuable than a small increase to damage if it lets you escape an unexpected second swing. Catalysts are documented as a way to upgrade stats, stamina and health, but no source identifies a best Sphinx build.

Bring a parry option without making it your only plan

Parries can produce devastating damage when the timing is correct, but the general rule does not establish that every Sphinx strike is parryable. Enter with a weapon and setup you can use confidently at close range, then test parries on clearly readable attacks rather than forcing them against a suspected unblockable. A failed parry costs health and positioning; a successful one is valuable only when it does not leave you in the path of the next attack.

Budget the flintlock’s ammunition

The flintlock can stagger through weak points, while ammunition is scarce. Save shots for a deliberate weak-point attempt or an emergency interruption that you have already observed to work. Do not spend the magazine during the opening seconds simply because Sphinx is visible. The available evidence does not establish a Sphinx-specific weak point, so regard pistol use as an experiment with a known cost, not a guaranteed phase shortcut.

Enter with a repeatable camera and distance

Because Sphinx is four-legged and can occupy a large part of the first-person view, choose a distance at which you can see the body and the golden headpiece without standing directly underneath the model. Keep an escape route open behind or to either side. The goal is not to circle continuously at maximum speed; it is to avoid being pinned against geometry when the boss accelerates.

Opening stage: learn the telegraph before you punish

1. Spend the first exchanges observing

At the start, resist the urge to attack as soon as Sphinx enters range. Watch which body part initiates movement, how long the boss holds the committed pose, and whether the attack travels straight, sweeps across your position or closes distance. You are building a recognition cue, not counting frames. If the cue is unclear, create space and let the attack finish.

2. Separate a real commitment from a feint or reposition

A boss moving toward you is not automatically attacking. Dodging every step burns stamina and can place you beside the next hitbox. Wait for the point at which the animation, sound or weapon/body motion makes the attack unavoidable if you remain in place. Dodge at that commitment, then look immediately for the recovery rather than rolling again on instinct.

3. Use the smallest safe evasion

For a committed attack, move far enough to clear the threatened space. A short lateral dodge may be safer than a long retreat when the move is linear; a retreat may be safer when Sphinx covers a wide sweep. The correct direction depends on the attack’s path and the arena, and the sources do not establish one universal dodge direction.

4. Take one controlled punish

After the attack passes, use the recovery animation for a modest attack or a confirmed parry follow-up. Stop before your stamina is empty. The opening stage is described as readable, which makes it the best time to learn how much distance your own weapon needs and how quickly you can disengage. A single safe hit repeated over several cycles is preferable to a long string that leaves you exposed when Sphinx recovers.

5. Reset your position

After punishing, return to a place where the boss’s body and the arena boundaries are visible. Staying underneath Sphinx to gain one extra hit makes the next telegraph harder to read. Resetting also gives stamina time to return, preserving a resource for an attack you have not yet identified.

Recognizing the transition to the enraged stage

The second stage is reported as erratic and enraged rather than as a simple increase in health or damage. Treat any abrupt acceleration, altered animation cadence or new chain of movements as a warning that your opening-stage rhythm is no longer reliable. The exact trigger and health threshold have not been published, so do not plan around a precise percentage.

When the pace changes, stop attacking long enough to observe one complete exchange. Your first goal is to survive the new sequence, not to prove that the old punish still works. If Sphinx follows an initial movement with an unexpected second action, your previous single-dodge habit may leave you in the follow-up. Keep a reserve of stamina and favor open space until the sequence is clear.

Enraged stage: mobility without panic

Keep moving, but move with a destination

The practical guidance for the enraged stage is continuous mobility so that Sphinx cannot trap you. Continuous mobility does not mean uninterrupted rolling. Walk, strafe or reposition when no attack is committed, then dodge only when the threat requires it. This preserves stamina and keeps your camera stable enough to read the next movement.

Expect the first dodge not to end the exchange

Because the stage is described as erratic, assume that a successful first dodge may be followed by another movement until you have seen the boss recover. Avoid immediately attacking after the first evasion. Track Sphinx for a moment, confirm that the body has stopped pursuing you, and only then decide whether a hit or parry is justified.

Do not let the arena choose your direction

Reposition diagonally toward open ground rather than backing into a wall or obstacle. If the boss reaches you while your back is blocked, a dodge that would normally clear the attack may leave you inside its space. A deliberate reset before the next commitment is safer than trying to recover from a corner with repeated rolls.

Take shorter punish windows

In the opening stage, you can test a modest attack after a readable recovery. In the enraged stage, shorten that test: one hit, a quick check of Sphinx’s body, then disengage. Extend the punish only after several cycles show that the same recovery remains consistent. The evidence supports caution, not a claim that every recovery has a fixed duration.

Dodge, parry or block? Choose from the attack’s signal

Response Use it when Main resource or risk How to apply it against Sphinx
Dodge The attack is signaled as unblockable or your observation shows that blocking fails. Consumes stamina; a panic chain can leave no escape resource. Wait for commitment, clear the threatened path, then watch for a follow-up before attacking.
Parry The strike is confirmed to be parryable and its contact cue is readable. A mistimed attempt costs health and can place you in the next hit. Practice on one recognizable opening-stage attack before risking the same response during the enraged stage.
Block You need to absorb a strike that is neither confirmed unblockable nor safely avoidable. Blocking costs a small amount of health under the game’s general combat rules. Use it as a fallback, not as evidence that every Sphinx attack can be safely held.
Reposition No attack is committed and you need space, stamina or a clearer camera. Turning away or moving blindly can conceal the next telegraph. Circle or strafe toward open ground while keeping Sphinx in view.

The table describes decision logic from the game’s documented combat system and the reported two-stage behavior. It does not classify individual Sphinx moves; confirm each move in play.

Two workable plans and their trade-offs

Plan Telegraph requirement Stamina pattern Enraged-stage risk Resource use
Patient parry-and-punish High: you must identify a repeatable contact cue and verify that the strike is parryable. Low when the parry is clean, but a miss can force an emergency dodge. Higher if you keep attempting a cue after the cadence changes. Usually preserves pistol ammunition and transmutation resources, provided failed attempts do not consume them.
Mobility-first Moderate: you mainly need to recognize commitment and attack direction. Steady consumption for necessary dodges; safer when you reserve stamina between attacks. Lower when Sphinx becomes unpredictable because you are not tied to a parry window, but poor spacing can still exhaust stamina. Lets you save the flintlock for a confirmed weak-point stagger; damage may be slower without parry openings.

Neither plan is established as the single best build. Start with mobility while learning the encounter. Add a parry only after you can identify the strike reliably, and drop the attempt immediately when the enraged cadence invalidates your cue.

How to use the pistol and transmutations without gambling the fight

Confirm a weak-point opportunity first

Weak-point staggers are a documented feature of William’s flintlock, not a confirmed Sphinx mechanic. If a visible point reacts consistently to a shot, record the spacing and the resulting opening. Until then, do not assume the golden headpiece is a weak point merely because it is visually prominent.

Use transmutations to solve your own failure

If you repeatedly die while out of stamina, prioritize a setup that improves stamina or survivability rather than adding damage you cannot safely deliver. If you survive but cannot capitalize on recoveries, a damage-oriented option may shorten the number of cycles. The available material does not document a Sphinx counter-transmutation, so choose according to the problem your attempts reveal.

Keep a reserve for the unexpected

Ammunition and other limited resources are most valuable when they change a losing position into a controlled one. Spending everything in the readable stage can leave you without an interruption option when the pace changes. Conversely, hoarding every resource is unnecessary if a confirmed stagger gives you a safe, repeatable opening; the key is confirmation rather than hope.

Common failure modes and corrections

You roll at every movement

Symptom: stamina is empty before Sphinx commits, and the actual strike catches you without an escape.

Correction: keep your feet moving without dodging until the attack has a clear commitment cue. Spend stamina only to clear a threatened path or reposition from a trap.

You keep the opening rhythm after the phase change

Symptom: the first stage felt solved, but the same punish now meets a second hit or a delayed follow-up.

Correction: treat the first enraged exchange as observation. Survive a full sequence, then test one hit at a time rather than repeating the old attack string.

You parry an unverified move

Symptom: the parry animation starts, but Sphinx’s strike still deals damage or pushes you into another attack.

Correction: return to dodging that move until you have confirmed its classification and contact cue. The general parry rule does not make every boss attack parryable.

You fight with your back to the arena edge

Symptom: a normal dodge leaves you trapped or under Sphinx’s body.

Correction: use quiet moments to move toward open ground, keeping the boss in view. Do not wait for the next commitment to discover that there is nowhere to go.

You spend the pistol immediately

Symptom: ammunition is gone before you know whether the shot affects Sphinx.

A practical learning routine

  1. First attempt: ignore damage goals. Identify the opening-stage commitment cue and note whether the attack is linear, sweeping or closing distance.
  2. Second attempt: dodge that cue with the smallest movement that clears it. Do not attack until you see the recovery.
  3. Third attempt: add one punish hit, then reset your distance. Stop the test if the camera or stamina becomes unstable.
  4. At the phase change: stop using the opening-stage script. Survive one complete enraged exchange while watching for extra movements or altered cadence.
  5. Later attempts: test one response at a time: dodge, then parry only a confirmed parryable strike, then a pistol shot only at an observed weak point. This isolates what actually works.

Keeping a short note of the cue, response and result is more useful than writing down an invented frame count. It also helps you notice whether a failure came from timing, stamina, camera position or an unsafe punish.

What a reliable kill looks like

A reliable victory is built from decisions rather than a memorized combo. In the opening stage, you allow Sphinx to commit, evade economically and take a measured punish. At the transition, you give up the assumption that the same rhythm will continue. In the enraged stage, you maintain enough movement to avoid being cornered, preserve stamina for unblockables and follow-ups, and attack only after the boss has demonstrably recovered.

That approach matches what is currently established about the encounter while staying honest about what is not. A future official guide, patch note or launch-footage analysis could add exact timings, move names, damage values or phase thresholds; until then, those figures should not be treated as facts.
