If Windows 11 feels slow, don’t chase a particular process count. Use Task Manager to find what is actually using CPU, memory, or disk, then reduce activity you don’t need. These five steps target common causes without asking you to end unfamiliar Windows processes.

1. Find what is using your PC’s resources

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Processes tab, review the CPU, Memory, and Disk columns to identify apps or background processes consuming resources. Select a column heading to sort by that measure. The Performance tab gives a system-level view of resource activity. Microsoft describes these tabs and the items they show in its Task Manager overview.

Close an app only if you recognize it and are not using it. Don’t end an unfamiliar Windows process simply because its name is unclear or the process count looks high. Process count alone does not establish that a PC is unhealthy or explain why it is slow; look for resource use and activity you can safely do without.

2. Stop unnecessary apps from launching at sign-in

Startup apps can affect both startup time and overall performance. In Task Manager, select Startup apps and review the listed apps and their startup impact. Alternatively, open Settings > Apps > Startup. Turn off apps you do not need to launch when you sign in; leave security tools and anything you rely on at startup enabled. Microsoft explains the routes and impact labels in its startup apps guidance.

Task Manager’s Low, Medium, and High impact labels are based on CPU and disk use measured during startup, not a guarantee of how much faster your PC will feel. Microsoft defines Low as under 300 milliseconds of total CPU use and under 292 kilobytes of disk use; Medium as under one second but over 300 milliseconds of CPU use, or under 3 megabytes but over 292 kilobytes of disk use; and High as over one second of CPU use or over 3 megabytes of disk use. Treat the labels as a way to prioritize review, not as universal performance thresholds.

3. Restrict background activity where Windows allows it

For an app that supports background management, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage, find the app, and select Manage background activity. Depending on the app and Windows version, you may also find the option through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, the app’s More options menu, Advanced options, and Background app permissions. Microsoft documents these controls in its background apps and privacy guidance.

Setting an app’s background permission to Never prevents it from running in the background, but you may stop receiving its background notifications or updates. Some desktop apps do not appear in this list; manage their background behavior in the app’s own settings instead.

4. Uninstall apps you no longer use and keep Windows current

Unused software can take up storage and may leave background activity or startup entries behind. Uninstall apps you recognize and no longer need through Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Keep the cleanup selective: do not remove system components or drivers just to lower the process count.

Check for Windows updates, and consider optional driver updates when they are appropriate for your device. Microsoft includes unused apps, storage, software currency, and hardware limits among possible contributors to slow performance in its PC performance guidance.

5. Use other performance settings only if they fit the problem

Reduce visual effects if the PC struggles with them

Windows includes visual-effects settings that can reduce resource use. Search Windows for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, open the result, and choose Adjust for best performance. This reduces visual effects; it does not identify or remove processes, and the interface may look less polished.

Choose a performance power mode when plugged in

If you need maximum performance and battery life is not a concern, select Best performance under Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode, where available. Microsoft warns this setting uses more power, drains laptop batteries faster, and can make a device warmer. For routine use on battery, weigh that trade-off rather than leaving it on by default.

Close what you are not using, then restart if needed

Close unused apps and browser tabs. If the slowdown persists after the changes above, restart Windows and check Task Manager again. A restart can clear temporary activity, but it will not resolve a persistent cause such as limited storage, a specific app’s resource use, or hardware constraints.

When process count is not the problem

Windows runs apps, background processes, and Windows processes; Task Manager groups these on the Processes tab. A high total by itself is not a useful diagnosis. Microsoft’s guidance focuses on resource use and other possible causes, including startup apps, storage, outdated software, and hardware limits. The sources cited here do not establish a universally safe process count or a guaranteed performance gain from lowering it.

When to consider a memory upgrade

Consider hardware only after checking resource use and trying the software steps. Microsoft lists 4 GB of RAM as the minimum memory requirement for Windows 11 on its system requirements page (accessed in 2026), and notes that some PCs with less may have upgrade options. That minimum is not a recommended amount for every workload, and adding RAM does not reduce process count or help every slow PC.

If Task Manager shows memory pressure and your PC maker confirms the memory is upgradeable, verify the exact model, supported memory type, capacity, and configuration with the manufacturer before buying anything. Some devices do not have replaceable memory.

What to expect

These steps can reduce avoidable startup and background activity, but they cannot guarantee a particular speed improvement. Microsoft cautions that “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.” If the same resource remains heavily used after you have closed unnecessary apps and restarted, use its name and resource pattern in Task Manager to narrow down the cause rather than ending unrelated processes.
