To make Windows 11 24H2 feel faster without downloading an optimizer, identify what is slowing the PC, then adjust the relevant built-in settings. Check Task Manager first; review startup apps, storage, background activity, and power mode only where they match the problem. These steps can help when a setting or resource bottleneck is responsible, but they do not guarantee a speed increase or fix aging hardware.
Start by finding the slowdown
“Slow” can mean a long startup, delayed app launches, sluggish response while working, poor battery life, or trouble installing updates. The right fix depends on which symptom you see. Open Task Manager and check its Processes, Performance, and Startup apps views for apps using substantial resources or affecting sign-in. Treat what you see as a clue, not a reason to disable everything: a sync app, security software, accessibility feature, or hardware utility may be important to you.
Microsoft notes that low storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets current needs can all contribute to poor performance. Its guidance does not establish a universal speed gain for any one change. Older PCs with outdated hardware may not improve significantly through settings adjustments.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for available updates. Updates can include fixes and performance improvements, so keeping Windows current is a sensible early step. Optional drivers are not a routine performance tweak: consider one when it is relevant to your hardware or helps address a specific problem, rather than installing every optional driver indiscriminately.

Reduce the apps that launch at sign-in
Apps that start automatically can lengthen sign-in and continue using resources in the background. Review them in either of these places:
- Settings > Apps > Startup
- Task Manager > Startup apps
Task Manager shows startup impact categories. Use that information alongside your own needs: turn off only apps you do not need ready immediately after signing in. An app disabled here can usually still be opened when you want it; the trade-off is that it may not sync, notify, or be ready until then.
Limit background activity only when the trade-off works for you
For supported apps, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s menu, then choose Advanced options. If a background-permission setting is available, Power optimized lets Windows manage background activity; Never can prevent the app from running in the background. That may also stop notifications or updates while the app is closed.

This control does not cover desktop apps generally. Manage those through their own settings. Avoid changing background behavior for an app if you depend on timely notifications or syncing.
Free storage without deleting files you need
Open Settings > System > Storage to see how space is being used. Use Cleanup recommendations to review suggested removals, which may include temporary files, large or unused files, rarely used apps, and previous Windows installations. Inspect each category before removing anything.
Previous Windows installation files can matter if you may need to roll back after an upgrade. Removing them can free space, but do not treat every recommendation as disposable. Storage Sense can automatically remove selected types of unneeded files; review its choices so its cleanup behavior matches what you want to keep.

When low space blocks an update
Microsoft’s support guidance gives typical planning ranges of 6 GB–11 GB or more of free space for feature updates and 2 GB–3 GB or more for quality updates. These are not guarantees: actual needs vary with the update path, optional content, languages, and installed updates. The reviewed Microsoft page does not show a publication year for these figures; it was accessed in 2026.

| Best performance | Performance over power efficiency | For demanding work, particularly when plugged in |

Let Windows handle routine drive optimization
Windows normally optimizes data drives automatically. Its built-in Optimize Drives tool handles different drive types appropriately: hard disk drives use defragmentation, while solid-state drives receive TRIM-oriented optimization. Leave scheduled optimization enabled for routine maintenance; manually defragmenting an SSD is not the right general-purpose speed fix.
Restart and check the original symptom
Close apps you are not using and restart if the PC still feels slow. After it starts again, check the same symptom you identified at the beginning—for example, whether sign-in or a particular app launch is still delayed. If there is no noticeable improvement, revisit the resource evidence in Task Manager rather than applying unrelated tweaks.

Optimization does not replace security servicing. In its September 22, 2026 update notice, Microsoft says Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro editions reach end of updates on October 13, 2026, while Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until October 12, 2027. Check your Windows edition and plan to move to a supported release when needed. Microsoft says unsupported Home and Pro devices will no longer receive fixes for known issues, time zone updates, technical support, or monthly security and preview updates.
The same notice identifies the September 2026 non-security preview as the final preview update for 24H2. Supported editions continue to receive monthly security updates according to their servicing lifecycle.
