If your older Windows desktop feels slow, start with free checks: install Windows and driver updates, scan for malware, free storage, reduce unnecessary startup apps, and identify whether the CPU, memory, or drive is the bottleneck. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed speed boosts; older hardware may need an upgrade. Avoid pop-ups that claim your PC has urgent problems and tell you to call a number or pay for a cleaner.
Why is my PC so slow?
A slow desktop can have several causes rather than one faulty part. Microsoft lists low storage, unnecessary apps and startup activity, outdated software, malware, and hardware that no longer meets modern needs among possible causes. Use Task Manager to see which resource is under pressure before deciding what to change.
These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; if the desktop still runs Windows 10, that support status is also worth factoring into longer-term plans. Microsoft’s startup-app guidance covers Windows startup settings.
Five practical ways to speed up an aging desktop
1. Install Windows updates and relevant driver updates
Windows updates often include fixes and performance improvements. Open Settings > Windows Update, check for updates, and install those offered for the PC. If optional driver updates appear in Windows Update, review them and install relevant ones. Avoid downloading drivers from unfamiliar third-party sites.

2. Scan for malware and unwanted software
Malware can consume CPU and disk resources, while potentially unwanted apps may slow the PC or display unexpected advertising. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and run a scan. Use built-in security tools or software from a source you trust; a separate paid cleaner is not a prerequisite for checking the computer.
3. Free storage and remove apps you no longer use
Low disk space can affect performance. Windows offers several ways to reclaim it: enable or run Storage Sense, remove temporary files in Storage settings, or use Disk Cleanup. Review the files selected for deletion first, especially if you keep downloads or other personal files in locations that a cleanup tool may include.
Uninstall apps you recognize but no longer need through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the exact label may vary by Windows version). Removing unused apps can free space and reduce background activity. Don’t delete files or uninstall software simply because a cleaner labels them unnecessary.

4. Reduce unnecessary startup and background activity
Apps that launch at sign-in can slow startup and continue using resources. Open Task Manager > Startup apps, check the listed apps, and disable only ones you recognize and do not need to start automatically. If you rely on an app as soon as you sign in, leave it enabled. Some apps also offer their own background-activity settings.
Avoid broad registry edits to change startup behavior. Microsoft warns that registry changes can have unintended consequences.
5. Find the bottleneck and optimize the drive appropriately
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. In Processes, look for applications using substantial CPU, memory, or disk resources; in Performance, inspect those resources while the computer feels slow. Close an app only if you know what it does and do not need it at that moment. A resource reading is a clue about what to investigate, not proof that a component is defective.

Windows includes Defragment and Optimize Drives. Use that built-in tool to optimize the selected drive rather than choosing a third-party defragmenter. Do not manually defragment an SSD. The Windows tool handles drive optimization; Microsoft’s guidance does not establish that every slow desktop needs a drive operation.

- Restart the PC: A restart can clear temporary problems and close processes that have accumulated during a long session.
- Close unused apps and browser tabs: These can consume memory and processor time, particularly when many are open.
- Adjust visual effects: Reducing visual effects may help on hardware with limited resources, at the cost of some animations and visual polish.
- Check power mode: Windows’ Best performance mode uses more power. Microsoft notes that it can make laptops warmer and drain their batteries faster; that battery trade-off is less relevant to a desktop.
Do I need an SSD for an old desktop?
Possibly—but first establish whether the current drive is the bottleneck. An SSD is one potential upgrade when storage performance is limiting the machine; it will not necessarily fix slowdowns caused by insufficient memory, a busy processor, unwanted software, or other hardware limitations.
Before buying, check the exact desktop model or motherboard documentation for the supported drive interface, form factor, available connectors, and capacity limits. Consider how much storage you need and compare the upgrade cost with free software changes that might address the diagnosed problem. Crucial lists SSD and memory upgrades, but says upgrade impact depends on the original PC or motherboard and the upgrade selected; its catalog does not establish compatibility for every desktop or provide a universal performance gain. Check the manufacturer’s upgrade catalog alongside documentation for your exact machine.

Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may see little improvement from software steps and says an upgrade may be the best long-term solution. The evidence here does not support ranking particular SSD models or promising a percentage speed increase.
