A fast internet speed test does not prove that copying files to your NAS should be fast. The speed test measures your WAN connection to a test server; an NAS transfer uses your client, local switch, cables or Wi‑Fi, NAS network interface, SMB or another file protocol, CPU, filesystem, RAID layout and drives. Use iperf3 to measure the network by itself, then test the NAS’s local storage. That sequence tells you which component needs an upgrade.

Why an internet speed test says almost nothing about an NAS copy

An internet test normally measures the path from your computer through your router and internet service to a nearby test server. A file copy stays inside your home or office: computer to access point or switch, across one or more Ethernet links, into the NAS interface and then through the NAS operating system, filesystem, RAID layer and storage media. Those are different paths with different limits.

A 1Gbps internet plan can therefore coexist with a 100Mbps Wi‑Fi hop, a 1GbE switch, a mis-negotiated port or disks that cannot sustain the requested workload. Conversely, a fast local link cannot make a slow hard-drive array or a CPU-bound SMB encryption job faster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

File-copy figures are also normally shown in megabytes per second (MB/s), while network links and speed tests use megabits per second (Mbps or Gbps). Eight bits make one byte, and Ethernet, TCP and SMB consume some of the link, so a perfect 1GbE transfer is not 1,000MB/s.

The diagnostic sequence that separates network from NAS limits

1. Measure the network without SMB

Install or enable an iperf3 server on the NAS and run the client from the computer that performs the copy:

  1. On the NAS, start the server with iperf3 -s.
  2. On the client, run iperf3 -c NAS_IP_ADDRESS, replacing the address with the NAS’s local IP.
  3. For a multi-stream check, run iperf3 -c NAS_IP_ADDRESS -P 4. Multiple streams can reveal a configuration that a single TCP stream does not, but they do not measure disk speed or SMB processing.

2. Check the negotiated link, one hop at a time

Before changing disks, verify what each interface actually negotiated. Test one NAS NIC, one client adapter, one cable and one switch port at a time. Confirm that the port reports the expected speed and full duplex. Inspect every hop for:

  • Storage Purpose-Built for Data Security – A NAS designed to keep your data safe, the LS200 features a closed system to reduce vulnerabilities from 3rd party apps and SSL encryption for secure file transfers.
  • Back Up Multiple Computers & Devices – NAS Navigator management utility and PC backup software included. NAS Navigator 2 for macOS 15 and earlier. You can set up automated backups of data on your computers.
  • A Wi‑Fi segment or powerline adapter replacing the wired path you assumed.
  • A 1GbE switch or adapter between 10GbE devices.
  • Damaged or unsuitable cabling.
  • VLAN routing, firewall inspection or another routed path between client and NAS.
  • Driver or adapter settings that force a lower speed.

In Synology’s SMB3 Multichannel examples, a 1Gbps wired adapter is preferred over a 150Mbps Wi‑Fi adapter. Multiple interfaces only help when the software, adapters and network path can use them.

3. If iperf3 is slow, fix the network first

A low iperf3 result means the local path is not delivering its rated capacity. Recheck the negotiated speed and duplex on both endpoints, move the test to a known-good switch port and cable, remove Wi‑Fi from the path, and verify VLAN and routing configuration. Repeat the test with a single stream and then several streams. Do not diagnose RAID or replace drives until the isolated network test is close to the expected class of link.

4. If iperf3 is normal, benchmark storage locally

A normal network result shifts the investigation inside the NAS. Use the NAS vendor’s disk benchmark or fio on a test dataset, following the platform’s safety guidance. Compare a large sequential read or write with a small-block random test. TrueNAS documentation specifically recommends confirming local storage performance before judging network bandwidth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not compare a single large-file copy with a directory containing thousands of small files. Small files add open, close and metadata operations, so the same network can appear dramatically slower. Record the block size, read or write direction, number of files, cache settings and whether the test used one or several clients.

5. Check NAS-side limits

  • Media: HDD arrays have different sustained and random behavior from SSDs. A NAS-rated CMR hard drive can be an appropriate replacement for a drive that is limiting a sustained workload, but the array and rebuild state still matter.
  • RAID and filesystem: parity calculations, degraded arrays, snapshots, compression and encryption can consume throughput or I/O operations.
  • CPU: SMB signing or encryption, filesystem checksums and compression can make the processor the limit. AES-NI support can reduce the cost of supported encryption workloads.
  • Samba behavior: SMB is not infinitely parallel; a lightly threaded server, an older CPU or a single busy process can leave a fast link underused.
  • Cache and contention: RAM cache, background scrubs, indexing, antivirus scans, virtual machines and another user’s transfers can change the result between runs.

6. Retest SMB in a controlled way

After the network and local storage tests, copy one large file and then a representative small-file tree. Use the same client, share, account, protocol settings and destination each time. SMB3 Multichannel requires compatible client and server software, adapters with comparable throughput and hardware capable of sustaining the aggregate rate. It cannot make obsolete drives or an overloaded CPU deliver 10GbE speeds.

How to interpret the measurements

Observation Most likely layer Next action
Internet test is fast; iperf3 is low Local network path Check adapter speed, duplex, cables, switch ports, Wi‑Fi and VLAN routing.
iperf3 reaches the link reference; local storage benchmark is low Drives, RAID or filesystem Inspect array health and workload type; consider faster or better-suited storage.
Both tests are healthy; SMB is slow only for small files Metadata, protocol or client workload Compare a large sequential file, review SMB settings and test from another client.
Single-stream iperf3 is low but multi-stream improves substantially TCP, CPU or adapter behavior Check drivers, CPU load and whether multichannel is supported end to end.
SMB is slow while every protocol is slow Network or NAS resource contention Follow network-layer isolation before changing SMB options.

Upgrade only the layer the tests identify

When a network upgrade is justified

A 10GbE NAS network adapter is useful only when the client adapter, every switch hop, cabling and the NAS storage can support the higher rate. If the existing switch is the limiting hop, a 2.5GbE or 10GbE Ethernet switch may be required; installing a faster NIC behind a 1GbE switch changes nothing.

When storage or CPU is the better investment

If iperf3 is near the link reference but the NAS benchmark or SMB copy is not, a faster link will not solve the problem. Investigate drive type, RAID level and health, filesystem features, encryption or compression load and CPU utilization. Upgrade drives, array layout or processing capacity only after the measurements point there.

What to include in a useful NAS speed report

  • Client and NAS model, operating-system and SMB or NFS version.
  • Negotiated speed and duplex for every hop, including whether Wi‑Fi was involved.
  • Single-stream and multi-stream iperf3 results.
  • Drive type, RAID level, filesystem and whether the array was rebuilding or busy.
  • Sequential versus random or small-file test method, file size and number of files.
  • CPU load, encryption or compression settings and any background services.

That information prevents an internet speed screenshot from being mistaken for a NAS benchmark and makes the next upgrade an evidence-based choice.
