The Spectrum router’s network security key is its WiFi password. For the default password, check the equipment label on the back of the router or gateway. If you changed the password, use your Spectrum account or My Spectrum app, or retrieve the saved password from a device already connected to the network.
What “network security key” means
It is the password used to join your WiFi network—not your Spectrum account password or a router-administration password. Spectrum also refers to it as a “WPA key” or “WPA/WPA2 passphrase.”
Find the default key on the router label
- Turn the router or gateway around and locate the equipment label, usually on the back.
- Find the WiFi network name, also called the SSID, and the password or network security key.
- Select that network on the device you want to connect, then enter the password exactly as printed, including its capitalization and characters.
Spectrum’s WiFi name and password instructions and its WiFi 6 self-install guide identify the equipment label as the source for default credentials.
If the label password does not work
The label shows the default credentials. If you or someone else changed the WiFi password, the printed information is out of date. Use the current password instead:
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Look it up in your Spectrum account
- Sign in to Spectrum.net.
- Open Services, then Internet.
- View the WiFi information for your network. Spectrum’s page also describes changing the network name or password there.
Check My Spectrum or the router maker’s app
For Spectrum-provided equipment, My Spectrum may show or manage WiFi information. If you use your own router, its credentials may not appear in the Spectrum app; check the router maker’s app or documentation. A verified Spectrum employee response clarifies this distinction.
Retrieve it from a connected device
If a phone or computer is already connected, its WiFi settings may let you view or share the saved password. Spectrum provides directions for Windows, Mac, iPhone or iPad, and Android. The exact steps depend on the operating system; Apple devices may require authentication, while Android’s saved-network sharing flow may display a QR code.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Make sure you are using the right network name
If the WiFi name was changed, look for the current SSID rather than the factory-default name printed on the label. Spectrum equipment generations can also handle WiFi bands differently: the WiFi 6 guide describes one network name serving 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, while the older Advanced Home WiFi guide describes separate names for those bands. Follow the names shown in your account and on your equipment.
After recovering or changing the password
Enter the current password on each device that needs WiFi access. If you changed it, devices that still have the old password saved may need to reconnect using the updated one. Spectrum’s support instructions explain that changing the WiFi credentials makes previously saved information obsolete.
