The Large-Sized Telescope (LST) collaboration inaugurated the completed four-telescope sub-array at Spain’s Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma on 15 October 2026. The milestone finishes construction of CTAO-North’s four 23-meter LST instruments, but the array must still complete technical testing, commissioning and formal acceptance before routine scientific operations begin.
What is the new telescope array in Spain?
The new installation is CTAO-North’s four-telescope LST sub-array: LST-1, LST-2, LST-3 and LST-4. It is part of the planned Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), an international gamma-ray facility designed to study some of the universe’s most energetic phenomena.
Each telescope has a 23-meter reflector with roughly 400 square meters of reflecting area. A camera containing 1,855 photomultiplier tubes records extremely brief flashes of atmospheric light. The structures are about 45 meters tall, weigh approximately 100 tonnes each and can turn to a new target in about 20 seconds.

Those specifications make the LSTs the low-energy core of CTAO-North. Their rapid movement is particularly important when astronomers receive alerts from short-lived events such as gamma-ray bursts or changing activity from black holes.

How do the La Palma Cherenkov telescopes see gamma rays?
The LSTs do not focus gamma rays directly. A gamma ray entering Earth’s atmosphere collides with atmospheric molecules and starts a cascade of secondary particles. As those particles travel faster than the local speed of light in air, they produce a fleeting blue-white flash called Cherenkov light.
- A high-energy gamma ray enters the atmosphere.
- The resulting particle shower spreads through the air and emits a short Cherenkov-light pulse.
- The LST mirror concentrates that light onto the camera’s photomultiplier tubes.
- Researchers reconstruct the original gamma ray’s direction and energy from the recorded pattern and timing of the flash.
Because the signal lasts only a tiny fraction of a second, the telescopes need large mirrors, fast cameras and rapid electronic readout. The technique also requires separating gamma-ray showers from the far more numerous background particle showers produced by cosmic rays.

Why are there four Large-Sized Telescopes?
When LST-1 through LST-4 observe the same atmospheric shower from different positions, scientists obtain several views of the event instead of relying on one image. This stereoscopic arrangement improves the reconstruction of the shower’s geometry, which in turn helps refine estimates of the incoming gamma ray’s direction and energy.
Multiple views also help reject background events. The four instruments therefore provide more than four times the collecting hardware of a single telescope: they form a coordinated low-energy system whose measurements can be cross-checked across the array.

What can the new Spanish gamma-ray observatory discover?
The LSTs are designed to observe the lower-energy end of CTAO’s gamma-ray program. Planned science includes:
- Gamma-ray bursts and other short-lived transients.
- Supermassive black holes and their powerful jets.
- Neutron stars and pulsars.
- Cosmic-particle accelerators, including sources that may explain how high-energy cosmic rays are produced.
- Searches for possible dark-matter signals.
These are research objectives, not promised discoveries. A dark-matter search, for example, may constrain models or find no signal rather than produce a detection.

The LST range versus the full CTAO concept
| System | Energy coverage | Scale and location | Status described for 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four LSTs at La Palma | Approximately 20 GeV to around 3 TeV | CTAO-North low-energy core | Construction complete; testing, commissioning and acceptance still required |
| Planned CTAO observatory | About 20 GeV to 300 TeV | More than 60 telescopes across northern Spain and southern Chile | Broader observatory concept, not equivalent to the completed La Palma sub-array |
The wider CTAO will combine telescope classes to cover a much broader energy range than the LSTs alone. The La Palma instruments are therefore a specialized component, not the entire CTAO facility.

What has LST-1 already demonstrated?
LST-1 began astronomical observations during commissioning in 2019 and has published performance studies using the Crab Nebula and a pulsar. Those observations provided an early demonstration that the design could measure very-high-energy gamma-ray sources while the rest of the sub-array was still being built.

During a bright flare in December 2023, LST-1 also detected very-high-energy emission from the quasar OP 313. The reported redshift was 0.997, corresponding to radiation that traveled roughly eight billion years before reaching Earth. The result illustrates why a rapidly responding, low-energy-sensitive telescope can be valuable when a distant source suddenly brightens.
Is the CTAO array operating yet?
Not as a routine four-telescope observatory. The 15 October 2026 inauguration marks completion of construction. Technical tests, commissioning observations and formal acceptance must still establish that all four instruments meet performance and safety requirements before regular operations begin.
LST-1’s commissioning-era observations show that scientific work has already been possible with the first telescope. They should not be confused with the completed four-LST array entering full operations.
What to expect next
The next stage is coordinated commissioning: engineers and astronomers will verify mirror alignment, camera performance, timing, pointing, rapid repositioning and the consistency of stereoscopic data across all four telescopes. Once the array passes acceptance, researchers can use the combined low-energy capability for scheduled programs and rapid follow-up of transient alerts.
The practical significance of the La Palma milestone is therefore twofold. It delivers a complete four-view LST system for reconstructing atmospheric showers, and it establishes CTAO-North’s low-energy foundation while the broader observatory’s planned northern and southern components continue toward their full scientific role.
