SpaceX launched the classified USSF-481 mission for the U.S. Space Force from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Oct. 15, 2026. A Falcon 9 lifted off at 8:01 p.m. EDT (0001 GMT on Oct. 16), and its reusable first stage landed about 8.5 minutes later on the autonomous drone ship Of Course I Still Love You. The launch vehicle and recovery were shown publicly, but the payload, destination, orbit and mission objective remain undisclosed.
What happened on the USSF-481 launch
The Falcon 9 departed Vandenberg Space Force Base at 8:01 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Oct. 15, 2026. That was 0001 GMT on Oct. 16. After separating from the upper stage, the first-stage booster performed its return maneuvers and touched down approximately 8.5 minutes after liftoff on SpaceX’s autonomous Pacific Ocean drone ship, Of Course I Still Love You.
Space.com’s report, updated Oct. 16, identifies the flight as the 114th Falcon 9 mission of 2026. The launch was successful through the publicly visible ascent and booster recovery sequence.
What rocket flew the mission?
USSF-481 used a SpaceX Falcon 9. The first-stage booster was vehicle 1081, completing its 28th flight. Sixteen of its previous 27 missions carried Starlink spacecraft to low Earth orbit, according to Space.com. That history makes USSF-481 another example of Falcon 9’s high-flight-rate reuse, while its classified customer profile sets it apart from the booster’s commercial broadband flights.

What was on the Falcon 9?
The payload is classified. Public coverage does not identify the spacecraft, instruments, destination, orbital parameters or specific objective. The U.S. Space Force is the customer, but that does not reveal whether the payload is a communications, surveillance, navigation, missile-warning or technology-demonstration spacecraft. Assigning one of those categories would go beyond the information released for USSF-481.
The mission’s webcast ended shortly after first-stage landing. Viewers therefore saw the launch and recovery but not payload deployment or an orbital view. That cutoff is normal for a classified national-security mission: the public can verify the rocket’s departure and booster return without receiving sensitive information about the spacecraft or its orbit.

How to watch the Space Force launch video
SpaceX’s launch webcast provides the publicly released video of the Falcon 9 liftoff and first-stage landing. The stream ended soon after recovery, so it does not show a payload deployment sequence. Search for the USSF-481 launch coverage using the mission designation and Oct. 15, 2026 date; videos labeled only as a “Space Force launch” may refer to a different flight.
Do not confuse USSF-481 with USSF-153
A separate Reuters-hosted video covers the earlier classified USSF-153 launch from Vandenberg on Sept. 10, 2026. USSF-153 and USSF-481 are different missions with different dates. A clip showing the September launch is not evidence of what flew on the October mission.

- The Package Includes: This Starship model set includes a 1/400 scale Starship Rocket Model. Gift packaging is available. The complete kit vividly recreates the scene of the Starship
- Note: This model is suitable for desktop display and has fulfilled the dreams of every enthusiast. It is not applicable to children's toys
What remains unknown
- The payload’s name, hardware and operator beyond the publicly identified U.S. Space Force customer.
- The target orbit, trajectory after deployment and final destination.
- The mission’s operational purpose and expected service life.
- Whether any later official release will provide additional technical details.
Classified status means these gaps are not errors in the launch video; they are deliberate limits on disclosure. Publicly available tracking or photographic analysis may suggest an orbit, but such interpretations should not be treated as an official identification of the payload or mission objective.

Booster 1081’s 28th flight illustrates how Falcon 9 missions now rely on repeatedly flown first stages. Sixteen of its earlier flights were Starlink missions, and Space.com reported that more than 70% of Falcon 9 flights in 2026 had served Starlink. USSF-481 shows the same reusable hardware being assigned to a national-security launch while the upper-stage mission remains hidden from public view.

- A COMPLETE LAUNCH-PAD SCENE: This starship model adds a tower, capture arms and storage-tank details around the rocket for a more immersive desktop display.
- MIST AND RED LIGHT IGNITION EFFECT: The built-in humidifier and LEDs work together beneath the rocket to simulate a dramatic launch plume without heat or propulsion.
- SIMPLE RESERVOIR CARE: The integrated water system is straightforward to operate; refill as needed and wipe the atomizing plate regularly to limit mineral buildup.
- HIGH-DETAIL 3D-PRINTED STRUCTURE: Contrasting silver, black and white components make the launch system easy to examine from multiple angles in offices, classrooms and exhibits.
- A DISPLAY GIFT FOR SPACE ENTHUSIASTS: Suited to adult collectors, engineers and students; place on a stable surface and handle the fine tower and arm details carefully.
The recovery profile also explains what the video can establish. The landing confirms that the first stage completed its portion of the flight and was recovered at sea. It does not confirm the payload’s deployment, orbit or mission success beyond the publicly visible launch milestones.
