SpaceX has returned Starship Ship 40 to Starbase after its July 24, 2026 flight, nearly three months after launch. The 52-meter (171-foot) upper stage survived a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean, was towed across open water, shipped through the Port of Brownsville and moved overland into the Starbase Megabay.
It is the first Starship upper stage to survive an ocean landing and come back to the launch site. Ship 40 now stands vertically inside the Megabay, giving engineers access to hardware that flew through launch, reentry and splashdown.
What happened to Ship 40
Ship 40 is Starship’s upper stage, the spacecraft that would eventually carry payloads or crew on an operational mission. It launched from Starbase on Flight 13 on July 24, 2026. After completing its flight, the vehicle made a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean rather than returning to land or being caught by the launch tower.

The spacecraft remained largely intact and afloat. Space.com reported its length as 52 meters (171 feet). Instead of abandoning the vehicle at sea, recovery crews kept it afloat long enough to move it toward land and arrange heavy-ship transport back to Texas.

How SpaceX brought the spacecraft home
- Controlled splashdown: Ship 40 entered the Indian Ocean and completed a planned water landing after Flight 13.
- Ocean tow: Crews towed the floating spacecraft through rough seas for 24 days. The tow brought it to waters near Australia’s Christmas Island.
- Inspection and sampling: Engineers examined the vehicle near Christmas Island and collected heat-shield samples before loading it for the ocean voyage to the United States.
- Semisubmersible transport: The spacecraft was placed aboard the semisubmersible transport ship Forte, which carried it across the Pacific and through the Panama Canal route to Texas.
- Port and road transfer: Forte reached the Port of Brownsville on October 7, 2026. From there, Ship 40 was transported overland to Starbase.
- Megabay placement: A heavy lift operation raised the spacecraft and set it vertically inside the Starbase Megabay, where teams can work on it under controlled conditions.
Why Ship 40 survived when earlier upper stages did not
The confirmed explanation is limited to the mission outcome: Ship 40 made a controlled splashdown and stayed afloat despite rough ocean conditions. Earlier Starship upper stages were destroyed after hitting the water, so there was no comparable vehicle to tow back for a detailed examination.
SpaceX has not published a complete technical account identifying which structural, thermal-protection or flight-profile choices were responsible for Ship 40’s survival. The recovery therefore demonstrates that an upper stage can remain recoverable after a splashdown, but it does not yet establish that every future Starship can be handled the same way.

What engineers can learn from the recovered vehicle
Ship 40 offers physical evidence that cannot be obtained from telemetry alone. SpaceX said it “will provide first-of-its-kind data on a flown Starship heatshield, Raptor engines, avionics, and more.”

Recovered tiles and underlying materials can be inspected for cracks, erosion, adhesive failures, water intrusion and other changes caused by launch vibration, atmospheric reentry and the splashdown itself. The samples collected near Christmas Island provide an early look; access to the complete vehicle allows engineers to compare local damage with the spacecraft’s wider thermal-protection system.

Raptor engines and propulsion hardware
The Raptors can be examined after a complete flight cycle rather than inferred from sensor readings. Teams can check chambers, turbopumps, plumbing, valves and mounting structures for wear or deformation associated with ascent, shutdown and reentry operations.
Avionics and vehicle structure
Flight computers, wiring, batteries, tanks, control surfaces and structural joints can be removed or tested directly. That inspection may reveal failure modes that remained hidden while Ship 40 was at sea and help engineers distinguish damage caused during flight from damage caused by the long tow and handling operations.

The distinction matters because a Super Heavy booster and a Starship upper stage face different loads, trajectories and thermal conditions. A tower catch also avoids a prolonged saltwater tow, while Ship 40’s recovery required 24 days at sea before the vehicle reached a port.

SpaceX has not announced an official date for its next Starship flight. Reports have described a possible Flight 15 attempt to catch the returning upper stage with the launch tower’s chopstick-like arms, but that plan remains conditional on the vehicle’s readiness, flight performance and safety constraints. It is not a scheduled event.

Ship 40’s return gives engineers a chance to use the recovered evidence before committing to that more demanding recovery method. The data can inform heat-shield changes, splashdown procedures, structural margins and the design of future catch attempts, while the vehicle’s transport history also shows the logistical cost of relying on ocean salvage.
Why the milestone matters
Returning Ship 40 closes a gap in Starship development: SpaceX has now obtained a flown upper stage rather than only post-flight telemetry or debris. Direct access to the heat shield, propulsion system and avionics should make it easier to connect what the vehicle experienced in flight with the condition of its hardware afterward.
The achievement is not the same as routine, rapid reusability. Ship 40 spent nearly three months between launch and its return to Starbase, including a 24-day tow and heavy-ship transport. Its significance is that the upper stage survived long enough to be studied, creating a new source of engineering data for the next generation of Starship flights.
