Space tourism does not have one ticket price: a brief suborbital flight and a longer orbital trip are different services. The clearest dated public price in the available company disclosures is Virgin Galactic’s limited offer of $750,000 per seat, announced on March 30, 2026. That announcement is not a guarantee that a seat is still available at that price. The environmental cost is harder to reduce to a single number: it depends on the vehicle, propellant, altitude, flight rate, and what an assessment counts.
How much does it cost to go to space?
Virgin Galactic’s published prices show a rising sequence of announced base prices and a later limited tranche. Its 2025 Form 10-K records the earlier prices; the company announced the $750,000 tranche on March 30, 2026.
| Price | What it refers to | Source and availability context |
|---|---|---|
| $450,000 per seat | Virgin Galactic base price in 2021 | Recorded retrospectively in the company’s 2025 Form 10-K; not a current offer. |
| $600,000 per seat | Virgin Galactic base price in 2023 | Recorded retrospectively in the company’s 2025 Form 10-K; not a current offer. |
| $750,000 per seat | Virgin Galactic Spaceflight Expeditions | A limited number of seats announced by the company on March 30, 2026; the announcement does not establish present availability. |
Virgin Galactic’s March announcement said its first new SpaceShip was nearing completion and that ground testing was set to begin in April 2026. It forecast commercial operations with that ship for the fourth quarter of 2026. These are company forecasts, not a guarantee that the schedule or seat availability will hold. The company’s Q2 2026 release also characterizes plans and timelines as forward-looking statements.

The sources available for this article do not establish a reliable primary-source public ticket price for Blue Origin or a comparable current public retail price for orbital providers. That leaves a meaningful gap: Virgin Galactic’s dated figures should not be presented as the price of all space tourism.

Why suborbital and orbital tickets are not interchangeable
Suborbital flights
A suborbital journey reaches space without completing an orbit around Earth. It is a comparatively brief trip, not an orbital stay. Virgin Galactic’s seat prices belong to this category; they should not be used to estimate what an orbital expedition costs.
Orbital trips
An orbital journey places the vehicle into orbit, where it can remain for a longer trip. Commercial orbital tourism can include capsule journeys and, in future concepts, stays in space habitats. The academic review underlying this article treats space tourism broadly, including short suborbital flights, longer orbital trips, and journeys beyond Earth orbit. Those categories involve different vehicles and mission profiles, so a single ticket-price range would conceal rather than clarify the difference.

What is the environmental impact of space tourism?
There is no one robust, apples-to-apples environmental figure established for every tourist flight. Effects depend on the propulsion system and propellant, the altitude at which emissions and water vapour are released, the number and frequency of launches, and the boundary of the analysis. A figure for one vehicle or one type of emission cannot stand in for the whole sector.
Why rocket emissions are not captured by a simple CO₂ comparison
A 2025 Syz Group overview repeats a comparison of approximately 12 kg of CO₂ per Virgin Galactic passenger-mile with around 0.2 kg per commercial-aircraft passenger-mile, attributing the figures to the Financial Times. Treat this as a secondary, methodology-sensitive comparison, not a settled sector-wide measurement. The original calculation’s assumptions and accounting boundary are not established here, and passenger-mile CO₂ alone does not describe all potential atmospheric effects of high-altitude rocket emissions.

The same overview discusses water vapour at altitude and its possible relevance to ozone and heat-trapping clouds, attributing the warning to atmospheric chemist Eloise Marais of University College London. Because this is a secondary overview rather than a verified direct transcript or primary research paper, it should not be presented as a verbatim quotation. It does point to why looking only at CO₂ may miss effects that depend on where emissions occur.
What environmental reviews and projections can—and cannot—show
Federal Aviation Administration environmental documents evaluate specified launch proposals and locations. A finding within a particular review’s scope is not a universal climate certification for every vehicle, launch site, or tourist flight.

- Note: This model is not a toy model, it is not recommended to buy for children, please buy with caution to avoid unnecessary trouble for your shopping
Academic work also models possible future space-tourism activity under scenarios. Any launch-rate or cumulative-impact result from such a scenario is conditional on its assumptions; it is a projection, not an observed outcome. Together, site-specific reviews and scenario studies help frame particular questions, but they do not supply a single comparable environmental inventory for all current and future tourism flights.

How to read a space-tourism price or emissions claim
- Check the trip type. A suborbital seat price does not tell you the cost of an orbital journey.
- Check the date and status. A past base price, a limited announced tranche, and a currently purchasable fare are different claims.
- Check who published the figure. An operator announcement, a regulatory review, an academic scenario, and a secondary media comparison answer different questions.
- Check the environmental boundary. Ask which vehicle, propellant, altitude, launch rate, emissions, and stages of the trip the number includes.
