Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Space Engineers servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
If a Space Engineers server reports “Sector Could Not Be Loaded”, stop the server and its automatic restart loop first. The error usually means the world’s sector/build data is unreadable because an autosave was interrupted, the save and server are on different game builds, or a required Workshop mod is unavailable. Preserve the broken copy, restore the newest known-good backup, then test build and mod compatibility before attempting any cleanup.
What “Sector Could Not Be Loaded” means
A Space Engineers world is more than its settings file. The sector contains the data needed to load the playable map, grids and other world state. A server can therefore show apparently normal settings while still failing when it reads the sector itself.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Three causes account for the usual recovery cases:
- Interrupted save: an autosave or shutdown stopped while the sector was being written, leaving a partial or corrupted copy.
- Build mismatch: the world was saved with a different game build from the dedicated-server binaries, often after a game patch.
- Missing or unavailable mod: the world expects a Workshop item that cannot be downloaded, has been removed, or is not enabled in the running instance.
Do not infer that the save is healthy just because its configuration file opens or the server process starts. The failure occurs at the point where the sector data is read.
Do this before changing files
- Stop the server. Disable any automatic restart or crash-recovery loop. Repeatedly pressing Start against the same damaged world can trigger more writes and overwrite useful evidence.
- Preserve the current state. Use the host’s Cloud Backup, if available, or download/copy the entire world folder to a separate location. Keep the copy outside the live world directory.
- Record the timing. Note whether the failure began immediately after a patch, an unexpected shutdown, a mod update, or a host migration. This determines which checks should come first.
- Do all edits and uploads while the server is stopped. An active autosave can replace the file you are trying to repair.
Never begin by deleting the save, clearing its files, or renaming it in place. Those actions can remove the only copy that still contains recoverable data.

Restore the newest known-good world
A backup is the least destructive recovery route because it changes the world back to a known loadable state. It may not contain the very latest activity, but it gives you a valid baseline for later troubleshooting.
Use the world’s Backup folder
- With the server stopped, open the affected world folder under the server’s
Savesdirectory. - Open its
Backup/directory and sort the timestamped copies by date. - Choose the newest copy created before the first failed start. Copy it to a separate working location before replacing anything.
- Use the host’s documented restore operation, or replace the active world folder with the copied backup while the server remains stopped.
- Start the server once and verify that the world loads. Do not re-enable an automatic restart loop until that test succeeds.
Use managed restore points
If your host provides Cloud Restore or a Backup Manager, compare the available restore points rather than selecting the first entry. Pick the latest point that predates the failure and is known to contain the intended world. Keep the failed copy even after a successful restore so you can recover newer files later if needed.

Restoring an older copy can lose progress made after its timestamp. That is a deliberate, measurable loss; repeatedly starting a broken save risks making the loss permanent.
Match the server build to the save
When the problem started after a patch, treat version compatibility as the next priority. Update the dedicated server to the same game build used by the save. A world created or last saved on a newer build may not load on older server binaries, and a server update can expose incompatibility with an older world or mod set.

Patch-related recovery sequence
- Check the server’s current game-build identifier in the host control panel or startup information.
- Determine which build produced the last known-good world copy. Use the timestamp of that copy and the game update window if the save itself does not display a build number.
- Bring the dedicated server to the matching build, following the host’s normal update process.
- Retry the known-good backup before testing the newest broken copy. This separates a version problem from damage in the latest save.
- If the current server cannot run the save, use a backup produced on the matching build rather than repeatedly converting the same failed files.
Build numbers and host update controls change over time, so verify the current values in your server panel and game release information when performing this step. Do not assume that “latest” on one side means “latest” on the other.
Test Workshop mods without destroying the world
The world stores its own mod list. Downloading Workshop files to a server does not prove that those mods are enabled for this world, and an installed item may still be missing, private, removed, or incompatible.

Perform a vanilla boot
- Stop the server and make a fresh copy of the current world or restored backup.
- Temporarily disable all mods for the test instance. Do not delete the world’s mod metadata.
- Start the server with the same build and world settings but no enabled mods.
- If the world loads, stop it and restore mods in small batches. Begin with definition-heavy mods and those changed recently, because they are more likely to affect loading data.
- After each batch, start the server and record which batch was active. When the error returns, test the individual mods in that batch.
Interpret the result
- Vanilla fails too: concentrate on the backup’s integrity or build compatibility; mods are not the primary trigger demonstrated by this test.
- Vanilla loads: one or more enabled mods, or their availability, is involved. Confirm that each required Workshop item can be downloaded and is enabled in the world’s own list.
- Only the newest copy fails: compare its mod list and save time with the last working copy before changing the entire installation.
Re-enable only the mods you can verify. A Workshop item that has disappeared cannot be made available by reinstalling a different file with a similar name.
If no backup will load
A server does not automatically create a fresh world merely because the broken one is deleted or renamed. As LOW.MS put it in its 19 August 2026 recovery guidance: “A Space Engineers server will not spin up a brand-new world on its own just because the old one is gone.”

Create a replacement world explicitly
- Open the local Space Engineers game and create a new world with the desired settings.
- Save the world and exit the game normally so all files finish writing.
- Copy the complete new-world folder to the server’s
Savesdirectory. - Move the broken save out of the active
Saveslocation. Do not leave both folders in a way that lets the server select the damaged one. - Point the server configuration at the uploaded world folder, then start the server.
This route starts a replacement world and does not recover the old sector. Keep the original folder archived in case a later build, mod restoration, or specialist recovery makes it usable.

| Route | Data loss | Confidence in a valid copy | Build compatibility | Mod dependence | Preserves the existing world? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Newest timestamped backup | Progress after the backup timestamp | High if that copy previously loaded | Must match the server build | Uses the backup’s recorded mod list | Yes, as an earlier state |
| Cloud Restore or Backup Manager point | Progress after the selected restore point | Depends on the selected point’s load history | Must match the server build | Depends on the point’s mod list and availability | Yes, as an earlier state |
| Build correction | None if the files are intact | Improves confidence only when the mismatch caused the failure | Requires the save and server on the same build | Mods must also support that build | Yes |
| Vanilla then batch mod testing | None when performed on a copy | High for identifying a mod trigger | Still requires a matching build | Starts with no enabled mods, then restores verified batches | Yes |
| New local world upload | All progress in the failed world | High for the newly created world | Uses the local game’s build; server must match it | Only the mods explicitly configured for the replacement | No; it starts a replacement |
Prefer the first route that produces a verified load while retaining the original files. A replacement world is a last resort when no copy can be made to load.
Common mistakes that make recovery harder
- Leaving the restart loop enabled: repeated launches can write over the state you need to inspect.
- Editing a live folder: uploads and configuration changes made while running can be undone by autosave or leave a mixed set of files.
- Deleting before backing up: removal is not a repair and can eliminate the only sector copy.
- Assuming the settings file proves health: the sector can be unreadable even when settings open normally.
- Installing Workshop files without checking the world list: the world’s stored mod selection still controls what it expects at load time.
- Testing every change at once: changing the build, replacing the backup and re-enabling all mods together prevents you from identifying the cause.
Preventing the next sector failure
- Keep automatic backups enabled and verify that they contain timestamped copies in the world’s
Backup/directory. - After a game patch, confirm the dedicated server build before starting important worlds.
- Keep an off-server copy of worlds you cannot afford to lose.
- Maintain a written list of the mods enabled for each world and note recent Workshop changes.
- When shutting down for maintenance, stop the server cleanly and wait for the control panel to report that it has stopped before moving files.
- Periodically test a backup on a stopped, separate instance. A backup that has never been loaded is only an assumption of recoverability.
Practical decision checklist
- Stop the server and disable automatic restarts.
- Copy the failed world outside the live
Savesfolder. - Restore the newest pre-failure backup and test it once.
- If the failure followed a patch, align the dedicated-server build with the save.
- Run a no-mod boot, then restore mods in controlled batches.
- If every preserved copy fails, create and upload a clean local world; deleting or renaming the old folder alone will not create one.
The sector error is usually recoverable without sacrificing the entire world, provided you stop writes first, preserve the evidence and change one variable at a time. The decisive order is backup, build, then mods; only after those routes fail should you move to a replacement world.
