Godlike.Host offers hosted Space Engineers servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Most Space Engineers mod failures have a specific, recoverable cause: the mod is subscribed but not enabled in the loaded world, the server is using the wrong service or network type, Workshop content failed to download, or another mod or game version is incompatible. Stop restart loops, save the complete log, then work through the checks below in order.
First, identify what “not working” means
Use the symptom and the server log to classify the failure before changing files. A server that starts normally but loads no mod has a different problem from a server that cannot download a mod or crashes while loading definitions.

Do not repeatedly restart a server that is failing during startup. Every restart can add noise to the log and leave a half-updated Workshop cache.
1. Preserve the log and the exact failure
Before deleting anything, stop the dedicated server and save the complete relevant log. The most useful artifact for download problems is workshop_log.txt; keep the normal dedicated-server log as well. Support guidance asks for the whole relevant block, preferably the entire file, rather than a single line copied from the console.

- The numeric Workshop ID associated with the failure
Record the world name, the server build, the complete mod list, and every numeric ID shown near the error. A mod title can change; its numeric ID is the reliable identifier when you contact the author or support.
2. Make sure the loaded world actually enables the mod
A Steam subscription only makes a mod available to the account. It does not activate that mod in a save. The mod must be present in the exact world loaded by the server.

- Open World Settings > Mods.
- Confirm the intended mod appears in the active list, not merely in your Steam subscriptions.
- Save the world, close the editor, and start the dedicated server with that same save.
When the game displays dependencies for a selected mod, it normally adds those dependencies automatically. If a dependency is listed as missing, do not assume that subscribing to the parent mod is enough; check that the dependency is available through the same service and is present in the world’s resulting mod list.
What to enter in a server mod list
Mod entries use a service prefix followed by the numeric ID. Steam Workshop content is represented as Steam:id; mod.io content is represented as mod.io:id. Replace id with the actual number, with no title text substituted for it. A correct ID on the wrong service is still unusable.
3. Check Steam, EOS, and the network type
Space Engineers can obtain content through different services. The world and server must agree on which service is being used. If a world depends on Steam Workshop entries but the server starts in an EOS configuration, the server may fail to start or may appear to ignore its mods.
- Open the dedicated server’s server settings.
- Find Network Type.
- For a Steam Workshop world, select Steam rather than EOS.
- Save the setting and retry with the same world and mod list.
A Keen support case documents a modded server starting successfully after its network type was changed from the default EOS setting to Steam. Treat that as a compatibility check, not as proof that every failure is caused by EOS.

Also verify each entry’s service prefix. A Steam ID written as a mod.io entry, or a mod.io ID written as a Steam entry, cannot resolve to the intended content.
4. Verify the account and update state
The Steam account used by the dedicated server must remain active and subscribed to every required mod. Confirm that Steam has not switched to another account since the world was created.
Account checks
- Sign in to the account that owns the subscriptions.
- Open each mod’s Workshop page and confirm the account is still subscribed.
- Check that Steam is not running under a different user or in an offline state that prevents an update.
- If a separate Steam session is holding
SpaceEngineersDedicatedopen, terminate that session so Steam can update the dedicated client and its Workshop content.
After correcting the account, allow Steam to finish any pending Space Engineers or Workshop update before starting the server again. A subscription that is valid in a browser but not available to the account running the dedicated process will not fix the server.
5. Repair a failed or timed-out Workshop download
Download errors are often caused by a stale cache, an incomplete manifest, a blocked connection, or a damaged Steam client component. Stop the server before touching any Workshop files.
Redownload one affected mod
- Stop the dedicated server completely and verify that its process has exited.
- Use the numeric ID from the log to identify the affected directory under
Steamsteamappsworkshopcontent244850. - Delete only that affected mod directory, preserving unrelated content and your server configuration.
- Start the server and let Steam download a clean copy.
- Review
workshop_log.txtand the main server log to confirm that the same ID now completes download and loading.
This targeted deletion is preferable to wiping the entire Workshop cache because it limits the reset to the content implicated by the log.
Rebuild the Workshop manifest when the failure persists
The dedicated-server troubleshooting guidance documents two broader repair options. In the DedicatedServer64 directory, replace the three Steam client libraries with known-good copies: steamclient64.dll, tier0_s64.dll, and vstdlib_s64.dll. Alternatively, delete appworkshop_244850.acf so Steam can rebuild the Workshop manifest.

Manifest deletion is a broad reset. Stop the server first, back up the server configuration and world files, and expect Steam to reconstruct its record of downloaded content. Do not remove the manifest as a first step when one mod directory can be repaired safely.
Check firewall, antivirus, and port access
Keen’s timeout guidance recommends checking firewall and antivirus rules and allowing SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe. The documented default server port is 27016. Ensure the executable is permitted on the network profile in use and that a security product has not quarantined a DLL or blocked Workshop traffic. If you changed the port intentionally, use that configured value rather than assuming the default.
6. Isolate dependencies, conflicts, and load order
Two mods can target the same definition even when their filenames and Workshop titles are different. One may overwrite the other, create a reference error, or leave the server apparently running while the feature does nothing.
- Create a copy of the world or use a disposable test save.
- Run it with one known-good mod.
- Add the remaining mods in small groups, restarting between groups.
- When the failure returns, split that group until you identify the smallest combination that reproduces it.
- Check the declared dependencies for the failing mod and confirm their IDs and services.
Changing load order can be a useful controlled experiment when two mods alter the same definition. Change only the order, record the result, and return to the previous order if nothing improves. If the issue remains with the smallest reproducible set, send both mod links and the complete log to the authors; do not assume that a different order permanently fixes an underlying definition conflict.
Distinguish a conflict from a bad download
If one mod fails by itself after a clean redownload, suspect compatibility, a broken definition, or a build mismatch. If each mod works alone but the pair fails together, suspect a conflict or dependency interaction. The log’s Reference issue detected message is especially useful for the latter, but the absence of that phrase does not prove that the mods are compatible.
7. Replace stale or corrupted local content
Complex script mods can break after an update leaves renamed files, stale assemblies, or partial content in the local directory. The visible Workshop subscription can remain correct while the files on the server are incomplete.

- Stop the server.
- Redownload the affected mod using the targeted directory procedure above.
- Start with the mod alone and inspect the log for XML, file-path, or compile errors.
- If the same error returns with a clean download, provide the game log and the exact mod ID to the author.
The message ModPath file doesn't exist points toward missing local content or a path expected by the mod. Do not create a guessed replacement file; the author needs the exact path and surrounding log lines to correct the package.
8. Account for PC and console limitations
Xbox and PlayStation hosts cannot execute user code. A script mod that works on a PC-hosted world therefore cannot be made to run by changing a console setting.
A PC dedicated server can support a script mod for console clients only when the script compiles server-side and does not require client-side execution. If the mod requires client-side script execution, console players will still fail even though the world is hosted on a PC.

- Host the world on a PC dedicated server when the mod explicitly supports server-side compilation.
- Use a no-script or server-side-compatible alternative for console players.
- Remove the script mod from a console-hosted world instead of repeatedly repairing its Workshop files.
Reading common failure patterns
“Unable to download mods” or “k_EResultTimeout”
Verify the active Steam account, stop the server, remove the affected directory under content244850, inspect workshop_log.txt, and check firewall or antivirus access for SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe. If the targeted redownload fails repeatedly, rebuild the manifest only after backing up configuration.
“Reference issue detected”
Check the mod’s declared dependencies, confirm that each dependency is in the world’s active list, and reproduce the problem with a smaller set. Preserve the IDs and the complete log for the author or support team.
The server starts vanilla but stops after a mod is added
Test that mod alone, verify Steam versus EOS and the Network Type setting, then perform a clean redownload. A single-mod failure points toward the package or its compatibility with the current build; a failure only when another mod is present points toward an interaction.

The mod is subscribed but has no effect
Open the exact save in World Settings > Mods, confirm the entry uses the correct Steam:id or mod.io:id form, and test for a definition conflict with other mods.

Self-hosting or managed hosting for mod-heavy worlds
Moving to managed hosting can reduce operating work, but it does not eliminate mod compatibility problems. Choose based on how much control you need over the failure points documented above.

Managed hosting is most useful when you need dependable uptime and do not require direct DLL or firewall control. Self-hosting is better when you need to inspect every file, rebuild manifests, or test Steam/EOS behavior yourself.
What to send when you need help
Do not send only a screenshot of the final error. Give the recipient enough context to reproduce the failure.
- The complete dedicated-server log, including the first error and the lines before it
workshop_log.txtfor download failures- The world name and whether the world is hosted on PC, Xbox, or PlayStation
- The server build or game version
- The full active mod list, including every numeric ID and its service prefix
- The exact Network Type setting
- The smallest mod combination that reproduces the issue
- Whether each mod works alone and whether a clean redownload changed the result
For a conflict, include links to both mod pages and explain the order in which they load. For a missing-file or compile error, include the exact path or exception text rather than paraphrasing it.
Final recovery sequence
- Stop the server and preserve the complete logs.
- Confirm the exact world is using the mod under World Settings > Mods.
- Verify each entry’s
Steam:idormod.io:idservice and numeric ID. - Set Network Type to match the world’s service, using Steam for Steam Workshop content.
- Confirm the active Steam account, subscriptions, and dedicated-client update state.
- Delete only the affected directory under
Steamsteamappsworkshopcontent244850and retry. - Check firewall and antivirus rules for
SpaceEngineersDedicated.exeand the configured server port, with27016as the documented default. - Test one mod, then small groups, to separate a bad package from a conflict.
- Use the DLL or manifest reset only for persistent download failures, after backing up configuration.
- Apply the PC-versus-console script limitation before spending time on a fix the platform cannot support.
If the server still fails after this sequence, the complete logs, world and mod IDs, service settings, and smallest reproducible mod set give Keen or the mod author the information needed to identify the remaining incompatibility.
