Set asteroid density when you create the world. In the normal Space Engineers world-settings interface, asteroid amount is a generation-time choice and is not available for retroactive editing after the save exists. On a dedicated server, the corresponding numerical control is ProceduralDensity: the documented GUI range is 0 to 1, and 0 disables automatic asteroid spawning. Editing a server configuration file can be a version- and host-dependent workaround, but it is not a guaranteed way to regenerate or reposition asteroids that players have already visited or drilled.
This guide separates supported world creation from community-reported configuration editing, explains what each setting actually controls, and gives a safe troubleshooting path for servers where asteroids are not appearing.

What the asteroid settings mean
Asteroid amount during world generation
The player-facing “Asteroid amount” option determines how densely asteroids are generated in space. It belongs to the advanced world-generation settings, alongside other choices made before the save is created. The World Settings reference specifically treats this as a generation setting rather than a normal session toggle.
That distinction matters for server administrators. Changing a setting that affects permissions or other session behavior is not the same as changing the input used to build procedural space. If the world already exists, the standard edit-settings screen does not provide an asteroid-amount control.

ProceduralDensity
ProceduralDensity is the numerical setting used for procedural asteroid density. The SessionSettings reference lists a dedicated-server GUI limit of 0 to 1. A value of 0 disables automatic asteroid spawning; values above 0 stay within the documented control when they are no greater than 1.
The references do not establish a universal “best” density, an exact asteroid count, or a guaranteed performance result for low, medium, or high choices. Your useful value depends on the kind of space you want and on the load your particular world and server can handle.

ProceduralSeed is separate
ProceduralSeed identifies the starting seed for procedural content. It is not a second way to choose density and should not be presented as a player-selected replacement for ProceduralDensity. The available references do not provide a simple, safe recipe for changing the seed on an established save, so treat seed changes as a separate and potentially disruptive operation rather than part of routine density tuning.
Generation settings versus existing objects
Procedural settings influence what the game generates, but the supplied community report cautions that asteroids already interacted with or drilled are not simply transformed when a value is edited. There is no supported promise that changing density will rebuild a populated world, move existing asteroids, or produce a uniform new layout in areas players have already used.

Set asteroid density correctly when creating a new world
Creating a fresh world is the supported, predictable route. Use the in-game labels rather than trying to retrofit the setting later.
- Open the world-creation screen and choose New Game (or the equivalent create-world command in your edition).
- Open Advanced world settings.
- Find Asteroid amount and select the density you want before generating the world.
- Review the rest of the world options, then create the save.
- If the world will run on a separate dedicated server, transfer or select that newly created world using the server’s normal world-management workflow.
A Steam support reply from a user identified as a Space Engineers developer also points administrators to advanced world settings during creation and notes that the option disappears after world creation. That is why deciding the density before the first save avoids the uncertainty associated with file edits.

Option 1: Keep the current world
If the existing asteroid field is acceptable, leave the save unchanged. This is the lowest-risk choice, especially when the world contains large builds, mined sites, or a long multiplayer history.
Option 2: Create a replacement world
When a different asteroid layout is important and the group can restart, create a new world with the desired amount selected in advanced settings. Decide in advance what must be preserved—blueprints, faction information, or a starting scenario—because a new procedural world is not a transparent conversion of the old one.

Option 3: Investigate a configuration edit
Community administrators report stopping the server, editing Sandbox_config.sbc, restarting, and visually checking the result. This is a user-reported troubleshooting method, not a guaranteed procedure for every Space Engineers version or hosting panel. File names, locations, and edit permissions vary between self-hosted installations and commercial control panels.
Use this method only when you understand the risk and have a recoverable backup. Keep the value within the documented 0–1 GUI range; the dedicated-server guide says numbers outside the GUI-supported range are untested and officially unsupported and may seriously affect gameplay or performance.
Safe procedure for a dedicated-server configuration edit
- Announce downtime. Ask every player to disconnect and stop the dedicated server completely. Do not edit a live world file.
- Back up first. Copy the world save and the relevant configuration files to a separate location. Keep the original untouched until the result has been verified.
- Confirm access. Check whether the host exposes
Sandbox_config.sbcor an equivalent world-configuration editor. A control panel may hide the file or write settings somewhere else. - Identify the active world. Hosts can retain more than one world or configuration, and community reports describe duplicated settings as a possible reason for apparent reversion. Make sure you are editing the world the server actually launches.
- Change only the intended value. Set
ProceduralDensityto a value from 0 through 1. Do not changeProceduralSeedunless you have a separate, tested reason and a rollback plan. - Save and restart. Close the editor, start the server normally, and verify that the configuration remains after the restart.
- Test cautiously. Compare behavior in space that players have not already generated, while remembering that no source guarantees regeneration of an established area. Do not use an already drilled asteroid as proof that the setting failed.
- Roll back if necessary. Stop the server, restore the backup, and restart if the world behaves unexpectedly or the host overwrites the change.
If the host does not expose the relevant file or setting, contact its support team rather than guessing a path or uploading an unverified configuration. The host may use a different file layout, synchronize values from a web panel, or restrict direct edits.
Dedicated server and player-hosted world: which path fits?

Troubleshoot a server where asteroids are not spawning
1. Check whether spawning was disabled
Inspect the active world’s ProceduralDensity. A value of 0 explicitly disables automatic asteroid spawning. If a panel displays a slider, confirm it is not at the zero endpoint; if you edit a file, check the actual value after the server has been stopped.

2. Verify that you changed the active configuration
Dedicated-server installations may contain more than one world or configuration file. A community report describes duplicated settings as a possible cause of a value appearing to revert. Confirm the launch world and the file or panel entry associated with it instead of assuming the first matching file is authoritative.
3. Stay inside the documented range
Use 0–1 for a supported GUI-level setting. An out-of-range number can make troubleshooting harder because the dedicated-server guide does not test or support those values and warns that they may affect performance or gameplay.
4. Stop and restart after a file edit
Editing while the server is running can be overwritten or ignored. Shut the server down, save the change, start it again, and then confirm that the value persisted. If it reverts, the control panel or another configuration file may be writing over it.
5. Separate new generation from old asteroid data
A populated area is not a clean test. The community report says asteroids that players have already interacted with or drilled are not simply changed by a density edit. Test conservatively and avoid promising players that the existing field will be rebuilt.

6. Escalate host-specific problems
When you cannot access the required file, do not invent a path or upload an unknown replacement. Give the host the world name, the setting you need, and the restart state, and ask whether its platform supports editing ProceduralDensity.
How to choose a density without overpromising
There is no authoritative benchmark in the available references that makes one preset universally best. Make the decision around your group’s priorities:
- Exploration-focused group: choose a nonzero amount during world creation and confirm that the resulting field suits the routes and bases your players plan to build.
- Resource-heavy or mining-focused group: consider how quickly players will consume nearby asteroids, but treat the setting as a starting generation choice rather than a guarantee of a particular ore supply.
- Existing long-running save: prioritize continuity and backups. A density edit cannot be assumed to repopulate mined locations.
- Performance-sensitive server: remain within the supported range and evaluate the actual world on your hardware; the references provide no universal performance number for each density level.
Backups, rollback, and player communication
Before any manual change, preserve both the world save and the configuration that currently works. Record the original value, the date of the change, and which world the server launches. Tell players that a configuration experiment may not alter already visited or mined asteroids. If the server fails to start or the setting keeps reverting, stop it, restore the backup, and involve the host rather than stacking more edits on an uncertain file.
For a new world, communicate the selected asteroid amount before players invest time in bases and logistics. That simple decision prevents the most disruptive form of density change: rebuilding a shared world after expectations have already been set.

Choose asteroid amount in Advanced world settings before creating a Space Engineers world. For an existing dedicated-server save, ProceduralDensity is the documented numerical control, with 0–1 as the supported GUI range and 0 disabling automatic spawning.
