Protect a working Space Engineers world before you add anything: stop the game or server, use Save As, copy the entire game and dedicated-server folders offline, record every build and mod ID, then change one component at a time. Mods are saved with a world, while Torch is separate server software that adds administration and plugins; neither one makes incompatible content safe automatically.

What you are actually installing

“Mods” and “Torch” operate at different layers. A mod changes the content loaded by a saved world: blocks, definitions, scripts, interfaces or other game behavior. You enable those items in the world’s settings, and the selection is stored with that save. The Steam Workshop is the distribution channel for Steam players; Mod.io is the cross-platform channel. PC players can also run plugins, which are executable extensions rather than ordinary world content.

Torch is a third-party framework for a dedicated Space Engineers server. It supplies live administration tools, chat commands and a plugin system around the server process. It is not a mod pack and it does not reconcile conflicts between Workshop items, Mod.io content or plugins. Torch’s repository describes the project as being in early development, so every update should be treated as a change that needs testing and a rollback copy.

The scale of the Workshop explains both the opportunity and the risk: the official wiki reports more than 500,000 community items, including mods, ships, stations and worlds (page crawled in 2026). A large catalogue does not mean that two items were designed to work together.

Back up before you touch a world

Keen Software House’s Modding Basics guide gives the instruction plainly: “IMPORTANT: Don’t forget to back up your game folder before making any changes.” The official Mods documentation also recommends a manual Save As before removing content, because blocks supplied by a mod can be permanently removed from the world when that mod is no longer present.

  1. Stop all activity. Exit the game or stop the dedicated-server process. Do not copy a world while it is being saved.
  2. Create a world-level Save As. Give the copy a date and a meaningful label such as MyWorld_before-thruster-update_2026-10-15. Keep the original untouched until the new configuration has loaded and been tested.
  3. Copy the complete environment. Keep an offline copy of the entire game folder, the dedicated-server instance, its configuration files and the world save. An external SSD is a practical destination; keep it disconnected when you are not making a backup so a failed update cannot overwrite every copy.
  4. Record the starting state. Write down the game build, Torch build, plugin versions, world name and each mod’s ID. A plain text manifest is enough, provided it is stored with the backup.
  5. Verify the copy. Confirm that the copied world appears in the load list and that the dedicated-server folder contains its configuration and save data. A backup that cannot be opened is not a rollback plan.

Keep at least one offline rollback set and note its date. If a later change fails, stop the server, restore this known-good copy and only then investigate the new component.

Choose the platform path before selecting content

Platform choice determines which distribution channel and code model are possible. Decide this before downloading a mod so that you do not build a world around content your intended players cannot load.

Server and player situation Content route Important limitation
Steam players on a Steam-based session Steam Workshop mods Workshop dependencies are not available to cross-platform servers.
PC and console players together Mod.io content supported by the server Official cross-platform servers cannot use Steam Workshop mods.
PC-only dedicated server Workshop or Mod.io world content, plus carefully selected PC plugins Plugins execute with broader access than ordinary in-game scripts.
Console clients joining a PC-hosted server Server-side features that the cross-play configuration permits Consoles cannot execute user code locally; script behavior must be checked per feature.

Cross-play is more than a network setting. The official dedicated-server guidance states that cross-platform servers cannot use Steam Workshop mods. If a world depends on one, replace it with a Mod.io version or remove the dependency before console players attempt to join.

Install or update one mod without risking the save

Use a controlled rollout instead of subscribing to a large collection and starting the server immediately.

  1. Start from the backup manifest. Confirm the current game build and platform route. Keep the existing mod list unchanged while you prepare the test.
  2. Inspect the item. Check its author notes, required dependencies, supported game version and recent update history. The official Mods page identifies failed downloads, definition collisions, load order and author reports as common troubleshooting paths.
  3. Add one item. Enable a single mod in the saved world’s settings, or update one existing item. Do not combine a game update, Torch update and several mod changes in the same test.
  4. Launch and read the load output. Look for download failures, missing dependencies, duplicate definitions, exceptions and warnings about load order. Save a copy of the output with the manifest.
  5. Exercise the affected feature. On a test copy, place the new block, open the changed interface or run the affected script. Then connect with the same player platforms used in production.
  6. Promote only after a clean test. Stop the server, copy the tested world as a new rollback point and apply the identical manifest to the live instance.

A mod can be incompatible with another mod even when both work alone. Keen’s warning is explicit: “A mod may not be compatible with other mods, could cause your game to crash, break your saved game, or otherwise negatively influence play.” Treat a successful first launch as a checkpoint, not proof that every combination will remain stable.

Add Torch to a dedicated server carefully

Torch changes the server process and introduces another release stream to maintain. It can provide live controls and administration that a vanilla server does not, but it does not make third-party content mutually compatible.

  1. Clone the dedicated-server instance. Make a separate test directory containing the server files, configuration and a copy of the world. Never use the only production folder as the first Torch installation target.
  2. Record versions before installation. Note the game build, Torch build and operating-system environment. Keep the previous vanilla configuration available so you can compare behavior.
  3. Install Torch in the test instance. Start with the framework alone and verify that the server starts, saves and accepts an administrator connection before adding plugins.
  4. Test administration functions. Exercise the live management tools and chat commands you intend to use. Confirm that ordinary players can still join and that shutdowns produce complete saves.
  5. Add plugins individually. Restart and test after each plugin. Keep plugin versions in the manifest and preserve the previous working Torch directory.
  6. Promote the tested instance. Stop the live server, take a fresh Save As and folder backup, then deploy the same Torch and plugin versions. Keep the vanilla instance ready for emergency rollback.

Managed hosting can reduce the operational work for owners who do not want to maintain Torch themselves, but support for a particular Torch build, plugin set, geography and cross-play configuration must be verified with the provider before committing a world.

Treat plugins as executable server code

Keen removed plugins from Steam Workshop and Mod.io because they can affect systems outside the game. The official plugin guidance says access to the PC, files and network is unrestricted and warns that plugins can damage or delete data outside the game; Keen disclaims responsibility for plugin use.

  • Review a plugin’s update notes before replacing it. A routine game patch can expose a previously harmless plugin to new failure modes.
  • Remove a plugin from the test copy first. If the server becomes unstable, stop it and restore the prior Torch directory and world rather than deleting files from a running instance.

Updating, removing and rolling back content

When a mod update breaks loading

Stop the game or server before changing files. Restore the previous world Save As and the prior mod version recorded in your manifest. Start with the known-good combination, then reproduce the problem on a disposable copy. If the old version is unavailable, disable only the updated item on a copy and inspect whether its blocks or definitions were written into the save; removing a mod can permanently remove its blocks.

When a Torch or plugin update fails

Stop the dedicated server, rename the failed Torch directory rather than overwriting it, and restore the previous directory and configuration from your rollback set. Confirm that the world opens under the restored environment before testing the update again. Do not “fix” a failed upgrade by changing several plugins at once, because you will lose the evidence needed to identify the cause.

When you intentionally remove a mod

Make a new Save As first. Inspect the world for mod-provided blocks, inventories and grids, and decide whether those objects can be safely removed or replaced. Keep the pre-removal save indefinitely if the world matters; the absence of an error at startup does not guarantee that every mod object has been converted safely.

Troubleshoot by symptom, not guesswork

  • Download failure: verify the item is available through the channel your server uses, check network access and compare the recorded ID with the world’s enabled list.
  • Definition collision: disable the newest item on a copy, then re-enable candidates one at a time. A collision usually requires changing the combination or load order, not reinstalling the entire game.
  • Crash during startup: restore the last known-good world and server folder. Add back the changed mod or plugin alone while watching the load output.
  • World loads but a block or interface is missing: check dependencies, version notes and whether the object belonged to a removed mod. Do not save over the only intact copy while investigating.
  • PC players join but console players cannot: check that the server is configured for cross-play, remove Steam Workshop-only dependencies and verify that the feature does not require client-side user code.
  • Intermittent behavior after several updates: compare the manifest with the rollback date and return to the last complete combination that worked. Reintroduce game, Torch, plugins and mods as separate changes.

Vanilla dedicated server or Torch?

Decision area Vanilla dedicated server Torch-based server
Administration and live controls Uses the game’s built-in server administration. Adds live management tools and chat commands through the framework.
Extensibility Minimizes third-party code. Supports a plugin system, increasing capability and the trust boundary.
Mod compatibility Still subject to conflicts among world mods. Still subject to world-mod conflicts; Torch does not resolve them.
Cross-platform planning Must follow the official dedicated-server rules. Must follow the same rules; Torch does not make Steam Workshop content cross-platform.
Rollback and maintenance Fewer moving parts to version and restore. Requires separate Torch and plugin manifests, backups and update testing.
Security boundary Smaller when no third-party plugins are installed. Broader because plugins may access the host PC, files and network without restriction.

Choose vanilla when minimizing third-party code and maintenance is the priority. Choose Torch when its live administration or extensibility justifies the additional testing, backup discipline and host isolation. In either case, dedicated hosting trades some hands-on control for operational convenience, and the host’s actual Torch and cross-play support must be confirmed before migration.

A repeatable change checklist

  • World Save As created and opened successfully.
  • Offline copies of the game folder, dedicated-server instance and configuration stored separately.
  • Game, Torch, plugin and mod versions recorded with IDs and dates.
  • Steam-only versus Mod.io cross-platform requirements confirmed.
  • One change made on a test copy, with load output retained.
  • Player join tests completed for every supported platform.
  • Rollback folder and previous manifest left untouched until the new version proves stable.

Following this sequence turns a risky all-at-once upgrade into a reversible change. The essential safeguards are simple: preserve the world before editing it, keep platform dependencies explicit, isolate executable plugins, and restore a complete known-good set instead of trying random fixes on the only copy.

The Bottom Line

Mods belong to the world, Torch belongs to the dedicated-server layer, and plugins expand the host’s security risk. Back up both before every change, test one variable at a time, use Mod.io for cross-platform worlds, and keep a complete offline rollback set.
