Used cooking oil is usually the stronger sustainability choice when a reliable, nearby supply exists, but it is not an automatic winner. A 2022 U.S. lifecycle study grouped used-cooking-oil pathways with other waste fats and reported 79%–86% greenhouse-gas reductions versus petroleum diesel, while oilseed pathways including soybean were reported at 40%–69% after land-use-change estimates. Those are pathway ranges, not a laboratory head-to-head result for soybean oil and used cooking oil. Feedstock quality, collection distance, preprocessing, conversion inputs, fuel specification, local regulation and delivered cost can reverse the practical choice for a particular plant.

Quick answer: which feedstock should a producer choose?

Choose used cooking oil (UCO) when your facility can collect a consistent volume, control contamination and moisture, and keep transport and preprocessing energy reasonable. Its main advantage is avoiding the land demand associated with growing a new oil crop, which is why waste-oil pathways generally receive lower lifecycle-emissions results.

Choose soybean oil when dependable agricultural supply, established storage and handling, or predictable feedstock specifications matter more than the lowest possible lifecycle footprint. Soybean oil is a major, established U.S. biodiesel feedstock, and its consistency can simplify plant scheduling and quality control. It is not accurate to call it environmentally inferior in every circumstance: the result depends on land-use-change assumptions, fertilizer and nitrous-oxide emissions, co-product allocation, transport and conversion inputs.

Both feedstocks can be converted into biodiesel, a fatty-acid-methyl-ester fuel made by transesterification. Do not transfer biodiesel results to renewable diesel; renewable diesel is hydroprocessed and chemically different. The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains the distinction and the role of feedstock in fuel properties at its biodiesel and renewable-diesel overview.

Decision axis Soybean oil Used cooking oil
Lifecycle greenhouse-gas evidence Oilseed pathways including soybean: 40%–69% reduction versus petroleum diesel in a 2022 U.S. study, after land-use-change estimates. Waste-oil pathways grouped with tallow and distillers corn oil: 79%–86% reduction in the same study.
Commercial role About half of U.S. biodiesel feedstock inputs in 2014–2017 were soybean oil. Restaurant yellow grease exceeded 10% of total U.S. biofuel feedstock in 2017; current share varies by market.
Fuel-property considerations Feedstock affects cloud point, cetane number and oxidative stability; a direct soybean-versus-UCO ranking is not established by the cited sources. The same property axes apply. Actual results depend on the collected oil and its treatment.
Economics No universal cost advantage; delivered price and plant logistics are location-specific. Collection, sorting, testing, transport and preprocessing can add costs that vary by region and quality.

What “soybean oil vs. used cooking oil for biodiesel production” actually compares

Soybean oil is a crop-derived feedstock

Soybeans are grown, harvested and crushed; the oil then enters an industrial biodiesel pathway. Crop production introduces land requirements, fertilizer use, field emissions and possible land-use change into the lifecycle boundary. Soybean oil also moves through an established commodity system, which can make volumes, storage and specifications easier to plan in regions with substantial soybean processing.

Used cooking oil is a recovered waste feedstock

UCO is collected after food preparation from restaurants, institutions and other kitchens. It can include water, food particles and other contaminants, so a producer must specify acceptable quality and account for sorting and preprocessing. Waste status does not make the pathway impact-free: collection vehicles, storage, rendering or other preparation, transport and conversion energy remain part of lifecycle accounting.

Biodiesel and renewable diesel are different products

For biodiesel, oils and fats are converted by transesterification into fatty acid methyl esters. Renewable diesel uses hydroprocessing and produces a hydrocarbon fuel. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines a pathway by three elements: “A renewable fuel pathway includes three critical components: (1) feedstock, (2) production process and (3) fuel type.” Read the official wording in EPA’s fuel-pathway guidance. A soybean-to-biodiesel pathway and a UCO-to-renewable-diesel pathway therefore cannot be treated as the same comparison.

Lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions: why UCO usually leads

The strongest U.S. comparison is a range, not a pairwise score

Xu and colleagues’ 2022 U.S. lifecycle analysis reports 40%–69% greenhouse-gas reductions for biodiesel and renewable-diesel pathways made from oilseed crops including soybean, canola and carinata, compared with petroleum diesel and after land-use-change estimates. For pathways using tallow, used cooking oil or distillers corn oil, the study reports 79%–86% reductions. The figures cover groups of feedstocks and both fuel types; they are not a direct, one-to-one measurement of soybean biodiesel against UCO biodiesel. See the study at Environmental Science & Technology (2022).

What drives the difference

The U.S. analysis identifies several variables that can materially change the result:

  • Land-use change: expanding or intensifying crop production can create emissions that dominate an oilseed pathway. The assumed land-use-change method is therefore part of the headline number.
  • Crop fertilizer and nitrous oxide: manufacturing and applying fertilizer, together with field nitrous-oxide emissions, add to soybean’s production burden.
  • Co-product allocation: soybean crushing creates meal as well as oil. How emissions are allocated between those co-products changes the oil’s assigned footprint.
  • Waste-grease rendering or preparation: UCO avoids crop cultivation but may require energy to collect, clean, render or otherwise condition the material.
  • Conversion energy and chemicals: the plant’s heat, electricity, reagents and process efficiency affect both feedstocks.
  • Transport and distribution: EPA lifecycle accounting includes feedstock transport, fuel production and distribution, and use of the finished fuel.

EPA describes these boundaries in its Renewable Fuel Standard lifecycle-analysis guidance. A UCO stream collected 500 miles away and heavily processed may not achieve the same result as a dense local collection network; a soybean pathway using favorable land-use and allocation assumptions may perform differently from another soybean region.

Feedstock availability and market context

Soybean oil has an established agricultural supply chain

The Energy Information Administration identifies vegetable oils, especially soybean oil, among the main U.S. biodiesel feedstocks. Historical EIA data show soybean oil represented about half of U.S. biodiesel feedstock inputs during 2014–2017. That statistic demonstrates commercial relevance, not a current market share. Crop yields, crushing capacity, competing food and feed demand, policy incentives and regional logistics all change over time.

UCO depends on collection density

EIA also lists used or recycled cooking oil and restaurant yellow grease among major biodiesel feedstocks. Yellow grease exceeded 10% of total U.S. biofuel feedstock in 2017, another historical figure rather than a current national percentage. UCO availability is concentrated around restaurants, food processors and institutions, so a plant’s practical supply depends on contracts, route density, storage and competition from other buyers.

Before selecting a feedstock, map the supply within the plant’s realistic collection radius. Record seasonal volume, minimum guaranteed volume, contamination rates, storage time, transport mode and backup suppliers. A theoretical low-cost waste stream is not useful if truck miles, missed pickups or inconsistent quality force frequent shutdowns.

Fuel properties: what can change in the finished biodiesel?

Feedstock choice can affect biodiesel’s physical properties and therefore its best uses. EIA highlights cloud point, cetane number and oxidative stability as useful comparison axes; its discussion is available in “Biodiesels produced from certain feedstocks have distinct properties from petroleum diesel.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud point and cold-weather operation

Cloud point is the temperature at which wax-like material begins to form and the fuel turns cloudy. A higher cloud point can create winter operability problems, affecting storage, filters and blends. Do not assume that soybean biodiesel or UCO biodiesel always has the lower value: the cited material does not provide a direct, controlled soybean-versus-UCO measurement. Test the actual production lot or obtain a specification from the supplier for the climate and blend level in which it will be used.

Cetane number and ignition quality

Cetane number is an indicator of ignition quality in diesel engines. Feedstock chemistry influences it, but a feedstock label alone is not enough to assign a ranking. Use measured fuel certificates and the applicable biodiesel standard for the destination market.

Oxidative stability and storage

Oxidative stability affects how a fuel behaves during storage. Collection age, heating history, contamination and processing can make two UCO batches behave differently. Plan tank turnover, sampling and quality checks around measured stability rather than assuming all waste oil is equivalent to refined soybean oil.

How each feedstock moves through a biodiesel plant

  1. Define the pathway. Write down the feedstock, conversion process and fuel type. This prevents a biodiesel calculation from being mixed with a renewable-diesel calculation.
  2. Set an incoming specification. For soybean oil, confirm the supplier’s composition and delivery consistency. For UCO, define acceptable water, solids, contamination and lot-to-lot variation before signing collection contracts.
  3. Plan receiving and storage. Size tanks, unloading equipment and sampling procedures for the expected delivery pattern. UCO routes may require more frequent inspection and segregation than a uniform oil supply.
  4. Preprocess the feedstock. Remove material that the process cannot tolerate and document the energy, consumables and yield loss. UCO generally needs more preparation than a clean, standardized oil, but the actual requirement is plant- and supplier-specific.
  5. Run transesterification for biodiesel. The conversion uses alcohol, a catalyst and controlled reaction conditions; account for process heat, electricity, chemicals, recovery and by-products in the pathway model. Do not substitute renewable-diesel hydroprocessing results.
  6. Verify the finished fuel. Check the properties relevant to the intended blend, climate, storage period and engine application. Cloud point, cetane number and oxidative stability deserve explicit attention.
  7. Document the lifecycle pathway. Record farm or collection activity, transport distances, electricity and heat sources, chemical use, co-product treatment and fuel distribution. The same nominal feedstock can receive a different regulatory result when these inputs change.

Advantages and disadvantages of soybean oil

Where soybean oil can be attractive

  • Established U.S. agricultural and oilseed-processing infrastructure supports large, predictable flows in major soybean regions.
  • More uniform, contract-defined oil can simplify receiving, storage and process scheduling.
  • Historical use at roughly half of U.S. biodiesel feedstock inputs in 2014–2017 shows that commercial-scale handling is well established.
  • Long-term supply agreements may be easier to structure where crushers and commodity logistics already exist.

What the producer must manage

  • Crop production introduces land-use change, fertilizer and field nitrous-oxide emissions into the lifecycle result.
  • Oil competes with food, feed and other markets, so local availability and price can shift with agricultural conditions.
  • Co-product allocation between oil and soybean meal can materially change reported emissions.
  • A soybean label does not determine cloud point, cetane or oxidative stability without measurements for the actual oil and fuel.

Advantages and disadvantages of used cooking oil

Where UCO can be attractive

  • Waste-oil pathways avoid the cultivation stage that drives much of an oilseed pathway’s land-use and fertilizer burden.
  • The 2022 U.S. study’s grouped 79%–86% reduction range is higher than its 40%–69% range for oilseed pathways including soybean.
  • Local restaurant and food-service networks can create a feedstock that would otherwise be discarded, while supporting a circular collection system.
  • UCO can improve a facility’s lifecycle score when collection, preparation and conversion are efficient.

What the producer must manage

  • Supply is geographically dispersed and may be seasonal or contested by other collectors.
  • Water, food residue and other contaminants increase testing, storage and preprocessing requirements.
  • Collection trucks, aggregation depots, heating, filtration or other preparation consume energy and can erode the lifecycle advantage if poorly designed.
  • Different restaurants and collection routes can deliver materially different lots, so contracts should specify quality, sampling and rejection procedures.
  • Waste status does not mean zero emissions; transport, rendering or preparation, conversion and fuel distribution remain in the accounting boundary.

Economics: why there is no universal cheaper feedstock

The available evidence does not establish a current, comparable soybean-oil price, UCO price, preprocessing cost or delivered cost for a defined region and plant scale. Any claim that one feedstock is always cheaper would therefore be misleading.

How to make a defensible choice for a specific plant

When UCO is the better starting point

Start with UCO if the facility is near a dense food-service market, collection rights are enforceable, quality can be measured at intake and the intended regulatory program rewards waste-based pathways. Confirm that the lower feedstock price is not offset by long routes, high moisture, frequent rejected loads or expensive preprocessing.

When soybean oil is the better starting point

Start with soybean oil if the plant is integrated with oilseed logistics, requires a stable specification, or cannot economically assemble enough local UCO. Model land-use-change and co-product assumptions transparently; do not hide them behind a single average emissions factor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a blended strategy makes sense

A plant may contract both streams to balance reliability and lifecycle performance. Treat each blend as its own pathway: measure the proportion of each feedstock, track separate transport and preparation inputs, and apply the jurisdiction’s rules for co-processing and crediting. Do not assume that adding a small amount of UCO automatically gives the entire batch the waste-oil pathway result.

Regulatory and reporting checks

Before construction or a feedstock switch, identify the governing program and its approved pathway definitions. EPA’s pathway framework requires the feedstock, production process and fuel type to be specified together. Confirm whether the program recognizes the exact soybean or UCO source, conversion route, co-products, land-use-change treatment and fuel destination.

For European projects, keep the Renewable Energy Directive’s processing-stage table separate from a full lifecycle calculation. The directive lists 3.2 g CO2eq/MJ typical and 4.4 g CO2eq/MJ default processing emissions for soybean biodiesel, and 0 g CO2eq/MJ for waste-cooking-oil biodiesel in that table. Those values do not establish a universal total footprint for every European or non-European plant.

For U.S. projects, document farm or collection origin, transport, production energy, chemicals, distribution and end use in the manner required by the applicable Renewable Fuel Standard pathway. Keep dated records so a later change in supplier, electricity mix or transport route can be reflected in the calculation.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Calling the 79%–86% range a direct UCO-versus-soybean result. It combines UCO with tallow and distillers corn oil, while the soybean figure is grouped with other oilseed crops.
  • Mixing biodiesel and renewable diesel. Name the fuel and conversion route every time a result is quoted.
  • Comparing EU processing numbers with U.S. lifecycle percentages. They use different boundaries and units.
  • Presenting 2014–2017 or 2017 feedstock shares as current. Label them historical and obtain current regional data for a business decision.
  • Assuming UCO is impact-free. Include collection, transport, preparation, conversion and distribution.
  • Assigning fuel-property rankings without measurements. Request cloud-point, cetane and oxidative-stability data for the actual fuel and blend.
  • Choosing on spot price alone. Add quality losses, logistics, storage, downtime and regulatory value to delivered cost.

A practical procurement checklist

  • Define annual and monthly volume, minimum delivery size and seasonal variation.
  • Specify sampling frequency, acceptance limits, testing responsibility and load-rejection terms.
  • Map supplier and collection locations, route mileage and backup capacity.
  • Record energy and consumables used for cleaning or conditioning each feedstock.
  • Separate soybean and UCO mass balances so lifecycle and regulatory claims remain auditable.
  • Obtain measured finished-fuel properties for the intended blend, climate and storage period.
  • Recalculate delivered cost and lifecycle emissions whenever supplier mix, transport distance or plant energy changes.

Bottom line for producers

Used cooking oil generally offers the better lifecycle-emissions profile because it is a recovered waste stream, and the cited U.S. study reports higher reduction ranges for waste-oil pathways than for oilseed pathways including soybean. That advantage is conditional: the study reports grouped ranges, not a precise soybean-versus-UCO experiment, and UCO still requires collection, preparation, transport and conversion.

Soybean oil remains a credible choice where agricultural supply is abundant, quality is consistent and logistics are efficient. Make the decision with a pathway-specific model that names the fuel, conversion process, geography, year, land-use-change treatment, co-product allocation, transport and plant inputs. Then verify fuel properties and delivered cost for the actual facility rather than relying on a universal ranking.
