Short answer: SOXX and SMH are unleveraged semiconductor ETFs intended for ordinary sector exposure; SOXL targets 300% of its benchmark’s one-day return and is a tactical trading instrument. Choose between SOXX and SMH by comparing their indexes, holding counts, concentration and fees. Consider SOXL only if you understand daily resetting, compounding and active risk management.
SOXL, SOXX and SMH at a glance
These three funds are often grouped together because they all provide semiconductor exposure, but they are designed for different jobs. SOXX and SMH are conventional, unleveraged exchange-traded funds. SOXL uses derivatives and daily leverage to seek three times the daily performance of the NYSE Semiconductor Index before fees and expenses.
| ETF | Structure and objective | Benchmark or reference index | Holdings | Expense ratio | Launch or inception |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SOXL | Daily leveraged semiconductor ETF; seeks 300% of the benchmark’s return for one day | NYSE Semiconductor Index | Not stated in the cited fund facts | 0.91% gross; 0.75% net | Not stated in the cited fund facts |
| SOXX | Unleveraged U.S. semiconductor-sector ETF | NYSE Semiconductor Index | 30 | 0.34% | July 10, 2001 |
| SMH | Unleveraged ETF tracking semiconductor producers and equipment companies | MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index | 26 as of October 15, 2026 | 0.35% total | December 20, 2011 |
The SOXX figures come from iShares’ March 31, 2026 fact sheet. SMH’s holding count and concentration figures below are dated October 15, 2026. Fund data can change, so check the latest issuer fact sheet before trading.

What SOXL actually targets
Direxion states that SOXL seeks daily investment results equal to 300% of the NYSE Semiconductor Index before fees and expenses. “Daily” is the key qualification. The target is reset at the end of each trading day; it is not a promise of three times the index’s return over a week, month or year.

Direxion’s warning is explicit: “These leveraged ETFs seek a return that is 300% or -300% of the return of their benchmark index for a single day. The funds should not be expected to provide three times or negative three times the return of the benchmark’s cumulative return for periods greater than a day.”
Why compounding changes multi-day results
Daily resetting means each day’s result is calculated from the fund’s new value. A simple illustration shows why the arithmetic is not the same as multiplying a longer-period index return by three. Suppose the index rises 10% on day one and falls 9.09% on day two. The index ends approximately where it started. A fund seeking three times the daily move would gain 30% on day one and lose about 27.27% on day two. Starting with 100, the leveraged path ends near 94.55, a loss even though the index returned approximately zero over the two days.
The opposite pattern can also help a daily-reset fund during a sustained, orderly trend. The outcome depends on the sequence and size of daily moves, not merely on the benchmark’s start and end points. Volatility can therefore erode results during a choppy market even when the index shows little net change.
What this means for holding period
- Intraday or very short tactical positions: SOXL’s daily objective is aligned with a view about the semiconductor index over a single session.
- Several-day positions: The result depends on the path of daily returns, financing and fund expenses. A three-times cumulative result should not be assumed.
- Core, long-term allocation: SOXL is generally unsuitable as a set-and-forget substitute for an unleveraged semiconductor ETF because leverage, resetting and volatility can magnify losses.
Direxion also warns that leveraged exposure can produce losses exceeding those of an unleveraged fund in adverse conditions. A 1% index decline is targeted as roughly a 3% decline for the day before fees and expenses; repeated declines and volatile reversals can compound rapidly.

How SOXX and SMH differ when neither uses leverage
SOXX follows the NYSE Semiconductor Index
iShares describes SOXX as an ETF seeking to track a U.S. equity index of semiconductor-sector companies. Its benchmark is the NYSE Semiconductor Index. The March 31, 2026 fact sheet lists 30 holdings, a 0.34% expense ratio and a July 10, 2001 launch date.
SOXX is therefore the straightforward choice when you want the particular exposure defined by that index and prefer the lower of the two stated unleveraged expense ratios. The index’s rules, rebalancing and constituent weights—not the fund name alone—determine the portfolio you receive.
SMH follows the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index
VanEck says SMH seeks to replicate the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index. The index covers companies involved in semiconductor production and equipment. SMH had 26 holdings and a 0.35% total expense ratio as of October 15, 2026, with an inception date of December 20, 2011.
Because the benchmark is different, SMH can produce materially different results from SOXX even when both are described as semiconductor ETFs. Country exposure, company eligibility, weighting rules and rebalancing schedules can all change the relative performance.

SMH’s current concentration
VanEck’s holdings table dated October 15, 2026 shows the following SMH net-asset weights:
| Company | SMH weight |
|---|---|
| Nvidia | 20.06% |
| Taiwan Semiconductor | 9.32% |
| AMD | 5.57% |
| Broadcom | 5.55% |
| Texas Instruments | 4.95% |
| Micron | 4.68% |
| Analog Devices | 4.49% |
Those seven positions add up to 54.62% of SMH’s net assets on that date, and Nvidia alone represented 20.06%. That is meaningful single-name and top-of-fund exposure for investors who expect a more evenly distributed basket.
SOXX’s cited fact sheet confirms 30 holdings but does not provide a complete current weight table in the available figures. The higher holding count does not, by itself, prove that SOXX has lower concentration: a fund with fewer holdings can be less concentrated if its weighting rules are different, while a fund with more holdings can still have a dominant top position. Use current holdings files when concentration is a deciding factor.
Fees and the cost of implementation
Published expense ratios
| ETF | Published fee | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| SOXL | 0.91% gross; 0.75% net | Direxion’s stated gross and net expense ratios; the daily-leverage structure can create additional trading and financing effects beyond the headline ratio. |
| SOXX | 0.34% | iShares’ expense ratio in the March 31, 2026 fact sheet. |
| SMH | 0.35% total | VanEck’s total expense ratio as of October 15, 2026. |
The 0.01-percentage-point difference between SOXX and SMH is small compared with the effect of their different indexes and holdings. For SOXL, the fee is only one part of the cost discussion: daily rebalancing, derivatives, financing and the path of returns can dominate the result over time. Do not select SOXL merely because its benchmark is the same as SOXX’s.

Which ETF fits each investor objective?
Choose SOXX when you want the NYSE Semiconductor Index in an unleveraged wrapper
SOXX fits an investor who wants broad exposure to the semiconductor sector as represented by the NYSE Semiconductor Index, without a daily leverage target. Its 30 holdings and 0.34% expense ratio make it the lower-fee unleveraged option among the published figures here. It can serve as a sector allocation only if you accept that a semiconductor fund is still concentrated in one industry and can be highly cyclical.
Choose SMH when the MVIS methodology and current portfolio fit better
SMH fits an investor who prefers the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index and is comfortable with its current portfolio profile. The fund held 26 names on October 15, 2026, with Nvidia at 20.06% and the seven listed leaders at 54.62% combined. That profile may suit someone seeking substantial exposure to the largest and most liquid industry companies, but it can increase the impact of a few holdings on total returns.
Consider SOXL only for a defined tactical trade
SOXL is the relevant vehicle only when your plan specifically calls for approximately three times the daily move of the NYSE Semiconductor Index. Before entering, define the intended holding period, maximum loss, position size, exit rule and monitoring schedule. A long-term bullish view on semiconductors is not automatically a reason to use a daily leveraged ETF; the path between entry and exit matters.

A practical decision framework
- Set the holding period. If the position is intended as a core allocation held without daily oversight, start with SOXX or SMH. If the thesis is explicitly about one trading day, SOXL may match the objective.
- Identify the benchmark you want. SOXX and SOXL reference the NYSE Semiconductor Index. SMH references the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index. Similar labels do not make them interchangeable.
- Check concentration. Review the latest holdings and weights. SMH’s October 15, 2026 data show a 20.06% Nvidia position; do not assume SOXX has the same profile or a lower one without its current file.
- Compare the fee with the exposure you receive. SOXX is listed at 0.34%, SMH at 0.35% and SOXL at 0.91% gross/0.75% net. For unleveraged funds, index differences usually matter more than one basis point of expense ratio.
- Stress-test the risk. For SOXL, model consecutive losses, alternating gains and losses, and overnight gaps. For SOXX and SMH, stress-test a sector drawdown and a decline in the largest holdings.
- Plan execution. All three are exchange-traded products that can be accessed through a brokerage account. Use a limit order when controlling the execution price matters, confirm the spread and trading volume at the time of order, and avoid assuming that a normal market order will fill at the last displayed price.
- Write down the exit condition. A price target, invalidation level, time limit or scheduled review prevents a tactical position from quietly becoming an unintended long-term holding.
Risk controls for a leveraged position
Size for the possible loss, not the intended gain
Because SOXL seeks approximately three times the daily index move, a modest adverse index move can produce a much larger one-day fund loss. Position sizing should be based on the amount you can lose without forcing a portfolio-level decision at the worst moment. Leverage does not reduce the capital required for a risk target; it changes how quickly that risk can arrive.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Monitor on the schedule the product requires
A daily-reset product needs more frequent review than a conventional sector ETF. Check the position after major market moves, around scheduled events that can affect semiconductor stocks, and before carrying a position through a period when you cannot monitor it. The objective is not to predict every tick; it is to ensure the position still matches the risk plan.
Do not use the ticker as a shorthand for a forecast
“Bullish on semiconductors” describes a direction, not a time horizon. SOXL adds a daily leverage and compounding decision. If your thesis is months or years, evaluate whether an unleveraged fund better matches that horizon instead of assuming that more leverage creates a better long-term return.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming SOXL is SOXX multiplied by three over a year. The target is 300% for one day, and Direxion specifically disclaims a three-times cumulative result for periods longer than a day.
- Choosing solely by the lowest fee. SOXX’s 0.34% and SMH’s 0.35% are close; their benchmark rules and holdings can matter far more.
- Treating “semiconductor ETF” as a standardized category. SOXX and SOXL use the NYSE Semiconductor Index, while SMH uses the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index.
- Ignoring single-name exposure. SMH’s dated holdings show Nvidia at 20.06%. A large move in one company can materially affect the fund.
- Using stale fact sheets. Holdings, NAV, returns and expenses change. The figures in this article are dated and should be checked against the current issuer pages before an order.
- Confusing sector diversification with portfolio diversification. Owning many semiconductor companies still leaves an investor exposed to one industry’s cycle, demand conditions and valuation changes.
What performance data can—and cannot—tell you
Issuer pages publish current NAV, returns, holdings and expenses, and those values change over time. Historical performance can show how a fund behaved during a particular period, but it cannot establish which ETF will win in the future. Direxion and VanEck both state that past performance does not guarantee future results.

Bottom-line selection
Use SOXX for unleveraged exposure to the NYSE Semiconductor Index with the lower stated expense ratio. Use SMH if the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index and its current concentration— including a 20.06% Nvidia weight on October 15, 2026—fit your portfolio better. Use SOXL only when you deliberately want approximately three times the benchmark’s move for a single day and have an active risk plan. None is universally best: the appropriate choice follows from your holding period, benchmark preference, concentration tolerance and ability to manage volatility.
