For booking and check-in, either the Southwest app or Southwest.com in a mobile browser works. Choose the app if you want Southwest-documented travel-day extras such as check-in reminders, boarding and gate-change push alerts, an iOS trip widget, digital bag tools, or in-app Lyft booking. Choose the mobile website if you prefer not to install an app and need the core supported tasks: booking, checking in, and displaying an eligible mobile boarding pass. Southwest does not publish a complete feature-parity chart or evidence that one channel is faster, more reliable, or universally easier.
The short answer
The app is the more capable choice for frequent Southwest travelers who value notifications and shortcuts. The mobile website is a practical browser-based route for a one-off trip, a traveler with limited phone storage, or anyone who cannot or does not want to sign in through an installed app.
Neither choice changes the rules that matter most on travel day. Online check-in opens 24 hours before the flight’s original scheduled departure time. Domestic check-in closes 30 minutes before scheduled departure; international check-in closes 60 minutes before, or 75 minutes for Aruba. Every traveler must have a boarding pass and be in the gate area at least 10 minutes before departure or the reservation may be canceled. Those deadlines apply regardless of whether you use the app or a browser.

What you can do in each channel
Booking a flight
Southwest’s current app page says travelers can search for and book flights. Southwest’s international-travel guidance explicitly says international flights may be booked through either the app or Southwest.com. That makes both channels legitimate booking routes.
The available official material does not provide a current, field-by-field comparison of mobile-web and app booking. Do not assume that fare displays, payment screens, optional products, trip-management controls, or the order of the steps are identical. If a booking control is missing in one interface, open the other channel rather than concluding that the fare or reservation is unavailable.
An older Southwest mobile-app description also listed booking, check-in, changing and canceling reservations, and described mobile-site management. Because that description predates the current 2026 seating policy, use it only as historical evidence that the app has handled reservation tasks; rely on the current interface and current help pages for what is available today.

Southwest supports online check-in in both its app and on Southwest.com. The process can retrieve a reservation with the confirmation number and the passenger’s first and last name. Online check-in opens 24 hours before the flight’s original scheduled departure time, not 24 hours before a later schedule change.
After you complete check-in, the channel can display a mobile boarding pass when the itinerary and traveler qualify. A traveler changing planes receives a pass for each leg. The pass is a scannable electronic boarding pass on a personal mobile device, intended for security and boarding.

Getting and storing the boarding pass
Southwest says its iOS and Android app and its mobile website can generate the pass after check-in. If eligible, save a copy to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. Wallet storage gives you another way to retrieve the code if you leave the airline page, but it does not remove the requirement to meet check-in and gate deadlines.
Keep the phone charged and make sure the pass is visible before entering the security line. A portable charger can be useful for keeping any travel phone usable, but Southwest does not require a particular charger or app.

Why the app may be worth installing
The case for the app is convenience beyond the basic check-in transaction. Southwest’s current app feature information documents the following capabilities:
- Travel-day push notifications: reminders to check in, boarding alerts and gate-change alerts.
- iOS trip widget: quick access to an upcoming trip, departure time and gate information.
- Digital bag tools: digital bag check and bag tracking.
- Flight-status updates: status information in the app.
- Seat actions where available: viewing or changing a seat when the reservation permits it.
- Priority Boarding upgrades where available: an in-app option when offered for the itinerary.
- Lyft booking: the app can show estimated arrival time, ride cost and pickup and drop-off details. Southwest says this requires signing in with a Rapid Rewards number.
These are documented reasons to favor the app. They are not proof that the mobile website lacks every comparable function; Southwest has not published a complete app-versus-web parity list.
How to book and check in with the app
- Install and open the official Southwest app. Sign in if you want account-linked trips, Rapid Rewards access or the Lyft integration. You can also retrieve a reservation with its confirmation number and the passenger’s first and last name.
- Search for the itinerary. Enter the origin, destination, dates and travelers, then review the available flights and fare options shown by the current app.
- Complete the booking flow. Enter passenger and payment details and save the confirmation number. The exact screens and optional products can change, so follow the labels displayed for your itinerary.
- Return at the opening time. Check-in becomes available 24 hours before the original scheduled departure time. Opening the app earlier does not make the check-in window open sooner.
- Select Check in. If the trip is not already attached to your account, enter the confirmation number and the passenger’s first and last name.
- Complete any required prompts. Some international travelers must scan a passport or U.S. I-551 card, or have documents verified at the airport, before a boarding pass can be issued.
- Open each boarding pass. A connecting itinerary has a pass for each leg. Save eligible passes to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet and keep the app available until the trip is complete.
- Use the travel-day tools if useful. Turn on notifications for reminders, boarding and gate changes, and add the iOS widget if you want trip details on the home screen.
How to book and check in on the mobile website
- Open Southwest.com in your phone’s browser. Use the current Southwest site rather than an old bookmark or search-result page that may contain outdated seating language.
- Book or retrieve a trip. For a new reservation, use the flight-search controls. For an existing reservation, use the confirmation number and the passenger’s first and last name when prompted.
- Return 24 hours before departure. The online check-in window is tied to the original scheduled departure time.
- Choose Check in. Follow the site’s prompts for the reservation and all required passenger information.
- Handle document verification when requested. International itineraries may require passport or U.S. I-551 verification at the airport before the pass becomes available.
- Display and save the pass. The mobile website can produce an eligible mobile boarding pass. Add it to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet when the option appears, or keep the browser page available for scanning.
- Check the gate and timing information. The browser route does not provide a documented equivalent to the app’s iOS widget, so write down or otherwise retain the departure and gate details you need.
Check-in deadlines that override the app-versus-web choice
| Requirement | Southwest rule |
|---|---|
| Online check-in opens | 24 hours before the flight’s original scheduled departure time. |
| Domestic check-in deadline | 30 minutes before scheduled departure. |
| International check-in deadline | 60 minutes before scheduled departure. |
| Aruba check-in deadline | 75 minutes before scheduled departure. |
| Gate readiness | Passengers must be in the gate area at least 10 minutes before departure; otherwise the reservation may be canceled. |
These are Southwest’s stated operational cutoffs, not a recommendation to arrive at the airport only at those times. Airport security, baggage acceptance and document checks can require substantially more time, especially for international travel.

Who may not receive a mobile boarding pass
Check-in support in both channels does not mean every traveler qualifies for a mobile pass. Southwest’s Help Center lists these exceptions:
Recommended Free Tools
- Lap children.
- Unaccompanied minors.
- Certain international itineraries.
- Partner reservations.
- Military and government fares.
If an exception applies, the site or app may direct you to an airport agent or another document process. Switching from the browser to the app will not remove an eligibility restriction.
Partner and international itineraries need special handling
Partner flights
For an itinerary involving another airline, check in with the airline operating the first flight. If Southwest operates the first flight and you are eligible, Southwest.com check-in opens 24 hours before departure. If a partner airline operates the first flight, use that airline’s website or app for the initial check-in and boarding pass.
International destinations
Southwest says travelers to or from Aruba, Havana and Punta Cana cannot check in online. Other international travelers may be able to begin online but still need a passport or U.S. I-551 card scanned, or their documents verified at the airport, before they can access a boarding pass.
Because international eligibility depends on the route, documents and operating carrier, do not treat a missing pass button as an app failure. Check the itinerary’s instructions and allow time for an airport document check.

The 2026 seating change makes old advice unreliable
Southwest’s current check-in experience says assigned seating took effect on January 27, 2026. It describes three seat categories: Extra Legroom, Preferred and Standard, plus numbered boarding Groups 1 through 8. Basic-fare travelers receive a Standard seat assigned at check-in, while other fares select seats at booking.
Older Southwest pages and search snippets still describe open seating and A/B/C boarding. That is stale policy context, not current guidance. Do not use old advice claiming that checking in seconds earlier determines an open-seat boarding position. Under the current assigned-seating system, the relevant actions are reviewing the seat offered or selected, checking the boarding group shown on the current pass, and following the instructions for that reservation.
When the mobile website is the better choice
- You are taking one trip. A browser avoids installing and updating an app for a single booking.
- Your phone has limited storage. The website still supports the core check-in and eligible boarding-pass flow.
- You use a shared or temporary device. You can open Southwest.com without leaving a permanent app on the phone.
- You prefer browser password tools. Your mobile browser may already handle saved credentials and autofill in the way you prefer.
- You only need a pass. For an eligible traveler, the app is not required to generate the mobile boarding pass.
The trade-off is that Southwest specifically documents app notifications and an iOS widget, while it does not publish a complete list of equivalent browser shortcuts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the app is the better choice
- You fly Southwest often. Keeping trips and travel-day actions in one installed interface can reduce repeated browser navigation.
- You want automatic reminders. Push notifications can remind you about check-in, boarding and gate changes.
- You use an iPhone. The documented iOS widget can surface trip, departure and gate information without opening the full app.
- You check bags digitally. The app lists digital bag check and bag tracking.
- You want an airport ride in the same flow. The documented Lyft integration provides estimated arrival, cost and pickup/drop-off details after signing in with a Rapid Rewards number.
Install the app for these functions, not because Southwest says it is inherently faster or more reliable. No such comparison is published in the official material reviewed.

Confirm the original scheduled departure time and calculate the 24-hour opening point from that time. A later delay or schedule change does not necessarily reset the opening rule. Also verify that you are using the operating carrier’s channel for a partner itinerary.

The pass does not appear after check-in
Review the eligibility exceptions: lap child, unaccompanied minor, certain international route, partner reservation, or military or government fare. International document verification may also be pending. Follow the airport instructions rather than repeatedly switching between app and browser.
The app shows an old trip or no trip
Retrieve the reservation manually with the confirmation number and the passenger’s first and last name. If the itinerary belongs to a partner airline for the first segment, use that carrier’s check-in system.
A gate or departure detail changed
Refresh the trip information and check the latest notification or airport display. The app’s documented push alerts and iOS widget can provide shortcuts, but you should still verify the displayed gate before boarding because airport information can change.
The boarding pass will not scan
Increase screen brightness, open the pass itself rather than a cropped screenshot, and ensure the phone has enough battery to display it. If the pass remains unusable, ask an airport agent for assistance. Wallet storage can provide a second retrieval path when the pass is eligible.
A practical decision rule
- Need only booking, check-in and a pass? Use whichever channel you already trust; both are supported for those core tasks when the itinerary is eligible.
- Want reminders, gate alerts, a widget, bag tools or in-app Lyft? Use the app because Southwest explicitly documents those features there.
- Flying with a partner or on an international route? Check the operating carrier and eligibility rules first. Channel preference is secondary.
- Seeing advice about open seating? Disregard it unless it is clearly historical. Southwest’s current policy uses assigned seats and boarding Groups 1–8 effective January 27, 2026.
- Worried about reliability or speed? There is no official app-versus-mobile-web test in Southwest’s published guidance, so choose based on features and access preference rather than an unsupported performance claim.
Bottom line
Southwest does not require its app for mobile check-in or a mobile boarding pass. Southwest.com in a phone browser is sufficient for eligible travelers who want the core booking, check-in and pass functions. The app earns the recommendation for documented extras—push reminders and alerts, an iOS widget, digital bag features, seat actions where available, Priority Boarding upgrades where available, and Lyft booking—while the website remains the simpler choice for browser-first access. Whichever route you choose, follow the 24-hour opening time, the domestic or international cutoff, the 10-minute gate rule, and the current assigned-seating policy.
