South Korea’s KOSPI was down 7.4% at 5,914.35 in an October 13, 2026 snapshot reported by The Associated Press, as semiconductor shares sold off amid investor concerns about the AI boom and competition from China’s CXMT. That was an intraday reading, not the index’s confirmed closing level. Earlier that morning, Yonhap reported a smaller decline; the figures capture different points in a fast-moving sell-off.
How the KOSPI sell-off unfolded
The reports show the decline worsening through the morning and into the later Associated Press snapshot. They are not conflicting accounts of the same moment, and neither establishes the KOSPI’s final close on October 13.
| Date and report time | KOSPI reading | What the report recorded |
|---|---|---|
| October 12 close | 6,384.24, down 3.65% or 241.69 points | Yonhap said the index extended its losing streak to four sessions. |
| October 13, 9:48 a.m. local time | No index level stated in the sidecar report | Yonhap reported that the Korea Exchange activated a sell-side sidecar. |
| October 13, 9:50 a.m. local time | 6,127.15, down 4.03% or 257.09 points | Yonhap reported that the index had opened 3.1% lower. |
| October 13, later Associated Press snapshot | 5,914.35, down 7.4% | The AP described this as the lowest level since late July. It also reported declines of 7.7% for Samsung Electronics and 8.8% for SK Hynix. |
The KOSPI is South Korea’s broad stock-market index; Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are individual listed companies. Their losses contributed to the semiconductor-led character of the session, but the share declines and the index’s percentage change are separate measurements.

Why semiconductor shares came under pressure
The Associated Press described investor unease about whether the AI boom can sustain its momentum. It also connected the concern to reports of advances by Chinese memory-chip maker CXMT, which could intensify competition for established producers Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron.

Yonhap pointed to losses in U.S. technology stocks as another pressure on sentiment. It said investors were also looking ahead to major-company earnings and U.S. inflation data. These are reported explanations and concerns surrounding the decline, not evidence that any one factor caused a measured share of the fall.
The AP said the KOSPI had reached an all-time high above 9,000 in June amid the global AI boom. The October 13 report therefore placed the sell-off against a sharp reversal from that high-water mark; it does not establish that the longer-term AI investment trend has ended.
What the sell-side sidecar did—and did not do
At 9:48 a.m. local time, the Korea Exchange activated a sell-side sidecar after the KOSPI 200 Futures Index had fallen at least 5% for at least one minute, according to Yonhap. The measure suspended program trading in KOSPI-listed shares for five minutes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA sidecar is a temporary curb on a specified category of trading intended to slow automated program orders during an abrupt move. The reported measure was not a full-market shutdown: Yonhap described a suspension of program trading, not a halt to all trading in every KOSPI-listed share.

Why the previous session matters
The sharp October 13 move followed a weak October 12 session. Yonhap reported that foreign investors were net sellers of 2.02 trillion won that day, while individual investors were net buyers of 1.47 trillion won. It also cited inflation concerns and elevated oil prices amid the broader market pressure.
For that October 12 decline, Yonhap quoted Lim Seung-mi, an analyst at Hana Securities Co., as saying: “The KOSPI plunged amid rebalancing of semiconductor-focused exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and concerns that Samsung Electronics and SK hynix may have completed their treasury stock purchases,”. That was Lim’s explanation of the prior session; it should not be treated as a direct explanation of every move on October 13.

What the reports establish—and what remains unknown
The October 13 figures are intraday snapshots, and the available reports do not establish the final closing level for that date. They document the market move, the sidecar’s scope and reported factors weighing on sentiment, but do not quantify how much of the decline came from AI concerns, CXMT, U.S. technology weakness, upcoming earnings or inflation data. No on-record explanation from a regulator, exchange official or company spokesperson for the October 13 sell-off is included in these reports.
