Hyundai Motor Group says it will invest US$15.5 billion in India between 2026 and 2032. The seven-year program covers Hyundai and Kia factories, Indian research and testing, local parts suppliers, electric-vehicle infrastructure, startups, financing and vehicle recycling. Executive Chair Euisun Chung announced the plan after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 13, 2026.
How much is Hyundai investing in India?
The commitment is US$15.5 billion over seven years, not a single-year expenditure. Hyundai Motor Group has not published a complete project-by-project allocation for the total, so the headline figure should be read as a group investment program running from 2026 through 2032.
The group plans to create a dedicated Indian investment entity to coordinate capital deployment, business partners and suppliers. That structure is intended to connect factory expansion with research, sourcing and newer mobility businesses rather than treat each project as a separate announcement.

Manufacturing and exports
Factory investment is designed to give Hyundai and Kia more capacity for Indian customers and for export programs. The group says its facilities in Chennai, Pune and Anantapur already provide more than 1.4 million vehicles of annual capacity. The announcement does not state how many additional vehicles the new spending will add or provide a final plant-by-plant timetable.

Indian engineering and testing
The planned R&D center and testing track are intended to make India a stronger engineering base, not only an assembly location. Hyundai Motor Group’s stated allocation is approximately US$700 million. Building local testing capability can allow vehicles and technologies to be developed and validated closer to Indian road, climate and regulatory conditions, although the company has not disclosed the track’s specifications or opening date.
Parts localization
Supplier development is a central part of the plan. More locally sourced components can shorten supply lines, reduce exposure to imported parts and help Indian manufacturers participate in Hyundai and Kia programs. The announcement does not specify a new localization percentage, a list of suppliers or the number of supplier jobs that could result.

Charging, startups and recycling
The future-mobility portion extends beyond vehicle production. Hyundai Motor Group says it will support charging, startups, financing and vehicle recycling. These areas address practical barriers to EV adoption: access to power, new technology and services, purchase economics, and responsible handling of vehicles and batteries at the end of their useful lives. Details such as charger counts, locations, startup funding totals and recycling targets have not been published.
Why India is strategically important to Hyundai
India combines a large passenger-vehicle market with an established Hyundai and Kia operating base. Yonhap News Agency reported that the brands sold 852,164 vehicles in India in the prior year, representing 18.7% of the country’s passenger-vehicle market. Those figures explain why the group is investing across factories, technology and suppliers rather than limiting the plan to a single new model.

Chung described India as one of Hyundai Motor Group’s most important strategic markets and said the company’s first 30 years in the country had established a commitment that the investment would extend for “the next 30 years and beyond.” He also linked the program to employment and industrial development with Indian partners and stakeholders.
Which Indian state is Hyundai’s EV hub?
Tamil Nadu is Hyundai Motor India’s flagship EV hub. Hyundai Motor India committed more than ₹26,000 crore for Tamil Nadu from 2023 through 2032, according to the company’s 2026 statement. That state-level commitment sits within a longer regional strategy focused on electric vehicles and related manufacturing.

Tamil Nadu is therefore the clearest answer to the EV-hub question, but the US$15.5 billion announcement covers Hyundai Motor Group’s India-wide activities. It should not be interpreted as saying that every dollar will be spent in Tamil Nadu or that other locations will be excluded.

More production and potential export volume
Additional capacity can support model launches, domestic sales and exports. The actual effect will depend on which plants receive upgrades, the timing of new products and demand in India and overseas markets.

A deeper automotive technology base
An Indian R&D center and track could expand high-value engineering work, testing and technical careers. It also gives Hyundai and Kia a platform for developing products suited to local conditions rather than importing every major engineering decision.
A broader local supplier ecosystem
Supplier investment can spread the economic impact beyond automaker factories. Components, tooling, logistics and engineering services may all benefit, although Hyundai has not released a direct employment forecast or a supplier-by-supplier investment list.
EV adoption tied to infrastructure and lifecycle services
Charging and recycling commitments recognize that EV growth depends on more than vehicle sales. Financing can affect upfront affordability, while recycling capacity becomes increasingly important as more electric vehicles and batteries reach the end of their service lives.
What remains unknown
- The annual spending schedule within the 2026–2032 period.
- The split between Hyundai and Kia projects.
- New vehicle capacity by plant and the number of additional production lines.
- The R&D center and testing track’s location, completion date and technical scope.
- Specific supplier-localization targets and the number of participating companies.
- Charging-station locations, charger quantities and operating partners.
- Direct and indirect employment totals.
- The share of investment devoted specifically to EVs, startups, financing and recycling.
Until those details are released, the announcement is best understood as a long-term capital framework rather than a fully itemized construction schedule. Its confirmed scale, seven-year horizon and combination of manufacturing, engineering, suppliers and future-mobility projects make it one of Hyundai Motor Group’s most significant India commitments.
