South Korean shares are under pressure as investors reassess the outlook for AI-related chip demand, weigh the possibility of stronger Chinese memory-chip competition and pull money from a market heavily exposed to two chipmakers. The latest reported fall followed a separate sharp decline the previous session; neither move, on its own, proves that AI investment has stopped or that chip companies’ fundamentals have collapsed.
What happened to the KOSPI?
The Associated Press reported that on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, the benchmark KOSPI was down 7.4% at 5,914.35, its lowest level since late July. That was a report-time market snapshot, not an independently verified official closing figure. In the same report, Samsung Electronics was down 7.7% and SK Hynix was down 8.8%. The KOSPI had crossed 9,000 to reach an all-time high in June, with the global AI boom helping drive the rally.
Monday’s decline was a separate session. SBS reported that on Oct. 12 the KOSPI fell 3.65%, its steepest daily drop in about a month. Foreign investors net sold about 2 trillion won and institutions about 110 billion won, while individual investors bought nearly 1.5 trillion won.

Why are AI concerns affecting Korean shares?
Investors are pricing expectations, not just current chip sales
Semiconductor valuations can respond to changing expectations about future AI infrastructure spending before those expectations show up in realized sales. In its account of the Oct. 13 decline, the Associated Press said unease about the AI boom had clouded prospects. That describes investor concern; it is not evidence that AI investment has ended.

Competition and revenue expectations are adding to uncertainty
The Associated Press reported that news of advances by China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) raised the possibility of more competition for Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron. The report does not establish how large or soon CXMT’s commercial challenge might be. The concern itself can still affect share prices as investors reassess future market share and returns.
SBS described another source of unease behind the prior session’s move: while South Korea’s market was closed for Hangeul Day, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 3.8%. SBS also reported that investor worries returned after OpenAI reported revenue below expectations. According to SBS, the shortfall was later explained as a difference in accounting calculation methods, but confidence did not promptly recover. The account comes from SBS; it should not be treated as an independently verified OpenAI revenue figure.

Why can chip declines move the whole Korean market?
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are major KOSPI constituents and central suppliers of memory chips used in the AI hardware supply chain. The Business Times, citing Bloomberg reporting, said the two companies together made up more than half of the index’s weighting. When both shares fall at once, their size can magnify the effect on the broader benchmark. It also means that a market rally tied closely to the memory-chip trade may be vulnerable to shifts in expectations for that segment.

SBS reported that Samsung completed an approximately 15 trillion won treasury-share buyback program on Oct. 6 and that SK Hynix was nearing the end of its purchases. Buybacks may support demand for shares while they are active; their completion removes that source of buying. SBS’s reported foreign selling on Oct. 12 is a separate market-flow factor, not proof of falling chip demand.

What does the earlier correction say about the risks?
In a July review, South Korea’s Ministry of Finance and Economy described a prior semiconductor-led sell-off as involving intensifying memory-chip competition from China, concerns about funding needs at major U.S. technology companies, weaker sentiment, unstable market flows and a correction after a sharp run-up. The ministry said sentiment and unstable flows amplified that July fall. That is the government’s assessment of the earlier episode, not an official explanation of the Oct. 13 decline.
The July review also offered a counterpoint to the market volatility: the ministry said Korea’s fundamentals remained solid, citing robust exports of key products including semiconductors, upward revisions to corporate earnings forecasts and a widening current-account surplus. It cautioned against excessive concern about the outlook. This was a July assessment, not a guarantee about October’s market or the future direction of earnings.

How should investors read the Korea–Taiwan comparison?
The Business Times reported that some investors continued to see Korean memory-chip shares as attractive on earnings, while others preferred Taiwan for its broader exposure to the AI supply chain and stronger earnings outlook. These are attributed investor views, not a quantified head-to-head valuation result or a recommendation. The useful distinctions are how concentrated a market is in a few large chip companies, how much of its AI exposure extends beyond memory, and how dependent its prospects are on continued memory demand and foreign capital flows. The cited coverage does not provide matched valuation data to settle that comparison.

The reported declines show that markets are reacting to concerns about AI-related expectations, competition, semiconductor-sector weakness and investor flows. They do not establish that the AI investment cycle has ended, that CXMT has already displaced the Korean leaders at scale, or that Samsung and SK Hynix have suffered a collapse in fundamentals. The price moves are real; several of the explanations are risks investors are weighing rather than confirmed changes in company results.
