For a focused comparison of AI-chip exposure, start with the MSCI Korea Index and MSCI Taiwan Index, which both cover large- and mid-cap companies in their respective markets. Then check each index’s largest holdings and distinguish the companies’ semiconductor businesses. The available profile figures point to a heavier single-company concentration in Taiwan, but their dates are not aligned, so they are not a valid same-day comparison.

Choose comparable benchmarks first

The MSCI Korea Index and MSCI Taiwan Index are a useful matched starting point because both target the large- and mid-cap segments of one national market. They do not represent every listed company in either country. The Taiwan Stock Exchange’s TAIEX and any fund tracking a different benchmark are not interchangeable with the MSCI Taiwan Index; compare the benchmark a fund actually follows rather than treating all “Taiwan stocks” as the same portfolio. Read concentration and dates together

The country profiles show that each benchmark has substantial exposure to a leading chip company, with TSMC’s reported Taiwan-index weight especially large. These observations are not synchronized: MSCI’s Taiwan profile reports data as of June 30, 2026, while the Korea result displayed in the available profile information does not establish a matching as-of date. MSCI also returned alternate profile figures, so the numbers below illustrate concentration, not a clean, current head-to-head measure.

Benchmark Largest chip-company weight shown Date and qualification
MSCI Korea Index Samsung Electronics: 35.31% MSCI profile result displayed October 11, 2026; an alternate profile variant showed 34.55%. A matching as-of date is not established.
MSCI Taiwan Index TSMC: 55.16% MSCI profile data as of June 30, 2026; another result showed 54.00%.

Index weights change as share prices move and through corporate actions and index reviews. Before using these figures for a current decision, check the latest MSCI factsheets and compare both indexes at the same as-of date and under clearly identified profile methodologies. Attach the provider and date to every weight you cite; an undated figure can quickly become misleading. MSCI Korea Index profile MSCI Taiwan Index profile

AI relevance does not mean identical chip exposure

Taiwan: TSMC is AI-relevant, but not an AI-only business

TSMC’s 2025 annual report identifies high-performance computing (HPC) among its end markets. It also says its semiconductor products serve smartphones, the Internet of Things, automotive, and digital consumer electronics. That supports describing TSMC as relevant to AI-chip exposure without implying that all of its business depends on AI demand. TSMC 2025 Annual Report

South Korea: Samsung is a major index holding, but the figures do not establish its AI mix

Samsung Electronics is the leading company in the returned MSCI Korea profile data. The available evidence does not provide an equivalent breakdown of its AI-related revenue or a precise separation of memory, foundry, and other businesses. Its index weight therefore shows company concentration, not how much of the Korean benchmark’s earnings or sales are tied to AI chips.

Country indexes still include more than chipmakers

Neither country benchmark should be treated as a pure semiconductor portfolio. However, the available profile snippets do not provide a complete, comparable sector breakdown, so they cannot establish how much each index allocates to chips versus other sectors. Use current factsheets if sector shares are central to your decision.

A regional benchmark is another option, but it changes the question: MSCI EM Asia includes both TSMC and Samsung among its leading constituents, alongside companies from other markets. It can provide broader regional exposure, but it does not isolate either country. MSCI EM Asia Index

Consider the investment route separately from the underlying exposure

TSMC’s 2025 annual report lists its ordinary shares on the Taiwan Stock Exchange under 2330 and its American depositary shares on the New York Stock Exchange under TSM. Buying an ADS changes the trading route, not the underlying company exposure. Broker access, taxes, fees, currency conversion, and fund structure depend on your circumstances; the listing information alone does not determine which route is suitable. TSMC 2025 Annual Report

A practical comparison checklist

  1. Define the exposure. Decide whether you want a broad national-market allocation, a large- and mid-cap benchmark, or regional diversification. Do not assume a country label means a pure AI-chip portfolio.
  2. Identify the benchmark. For a matched starting point, compare the MSCI Korea Index with the MSCI Taiwan Index; for a fund, verify its stated benchmark and holdings.
  3. Use synchronized factsheets. Record the provider, observation date, index variant, and largest constituents for both benchmarks. Do not pair weights from different dates as though they were simultaneous.
  4. Separate weight from business mix. A large holding weight measures how much the company influences the index, not the share of its revenue, earnings, or future returns attributable to AI.
  5. Check diversification and access details. Review current sector and constituent weights, then account for the product’s currency, domicile, fees, taxes, and trading route before deciding whether it fits your needs.
